Greenock Cut & the Hole of Spango

  • A walk in Inverclyde from Inverkip to Greenock following the Greenock Cut, an early 19th century aqueduct that powered mills above Greenock and provided the people of Greenock with drinking water. The walk, mostly within the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park, is around 9 miles in total, from Inverkip railway station to Greenock Central railway station. The route passes what is known as the 'Roman Bridge' over the Kip Water, and leaves the road at Shielhill Farm to follow the path, at an elevation of around 160 metres, under Dunrod Hill. Views down to Greenock and Gourock, and across the wide Firth of Clyde towards Dunoon and Kilcreggan, would normally be stunning, but a misty day means we can only catch glimpses of a stunning land and seascape. We pause at the Hole of Spango to wonder where the name 'Spango' originates, and continue by Black Hill and Yellow Hill and the dying remnants of Autumn colours on the misty moor. By Overton, we drop down off the moor into Greenock.

    Enjoyed the video, thanks. I understand that during the coldest parts of the winter, men were stationed in the bothies. Their duty was to ensure that the cut did not ice up and stop the flow of water to the mills. Cold duty, hard men. Best wishes, Peter

    My sister and I visited the Greenock Cut the other week. Wow, it's beautiful there and I will be back to walk the full circuit. The road we took to the visitor centre was closed, so we parked as far as we could go, and walked to the visitor centre to start. We ended up taking what we were told was a shortcut at Scroggy Bank (another strange name) and through the middle of the moors. It certainly didn't feel like a shortcut to our legs 😂 and I must admit thought we might be lost at one point with all the optional paths coming off the main path. Like you say, an ordnance survey map is a good idea, especially if your phone signal is patchy or zero. Almost seven miles later we made it back safely, soaked to the skin. What an adventure though! I can't wait to go back on a sunnier day to walk the full route properly and see the views 🙂

      Hi Dawn-Marie. Yes, it's a lovely area, but like all upland moors it can be difficult staying on the right path. I think the fact that there's a visitor centre there possibly lulls folk into a false sense of security. Certainly an area where care, and a map, is required. Enjoy your next visit.

    I've been isolating the last week after testing positive for the pestilence. Am fine now, but have passed many hours watching your videos. Might even get of my bahookie and do one or two. Cheers and Happy New Year when it comes.

      I didn't feel 100% the first time I went for a walk after catching Covid when it all started back in March last year. Take it easy when you go out. Have a great 2022.

      @@EdExploresScotland I especially like the parts with the pipes at the beginning. Very creative! I'm Dutch from near Rotterdam but lived in Edinburgh and Peterculter (Aberdeenshire) from '90 to '93. My dad was in the offshore business. Your videos seem to focus around SW Scotland. Do you have any videos on the North-East? I should really come back and see for myself sometime soon. Keep it up!

      Thanks for that. You bring up a good point re the geographical focus of my videos; it's certainly not a balanced collection of videos. Up until now I've made videos of places that I can visit in one day, with travel there and back. For me to expand my horizons, so to speak, I need to start considering overnight stays that will allow me to visit areas further afield. And that's where money and expense rear their ugly head. That said, I am planning some such visits in 2022. Stay tuned.

      @@EdExploresScotland Absolutely. I would recommend the Cut starting at Overton (your finishing spot in this video) and doing the full circuit down past the loch and back onto the path you were on - you pass a few reservoirs. Trains are less frequent at Drumfrochar station but it saves the walk to/from Greenock West.

    I used to walk along the cut fishing with my friends when younger late 60's early 70's,my great uncle stayed in an ioslated small farm further up in the hills,he used to take me with him when he opened the sluices near there (to make sure folk in Greenock get their cup of tea)he would say,it was his job to do that 2 or 3 times a day 365 days a year

    I've done that walk many times and wondered about the bothies with the fire places, they must have manually turned the water on and off to the mills, so maybe they use them as shelter rather than walking up and down morning noon and night. I'm sure the visitor centre will have the answer.

    • @EdExploresScotland
      @EdExploresScotland  3 роки тому

      Yes, I'm not sure, but I think you're right re the water being turned off now and then. You can still see ratchets and mechanisms where they could divert water at various places.

    Another great and interesting production Eddy.
    It’s incredible to think that you are managing all of this entirely on your own. The camera work, editing, music and the overall planning, especially at this time of the year, with the weather and shorter days, it must be a real challenge. I sometimes wonder about the extra time taken walking to and away from the camera, we really appreciate all your efforts!
    Take care and best regards, Rob.
