Miss these things
Uyen we call these QUICK BREAD in the USA. or they used to call it this. The category includes a lot of quick usually sweet loaf cakes that people would eat for any meal or snack.
Yes! Quick Breads and Muffins are the same category - they does not have to be sweet - it can also be savory. What distinguishes a quick bread or a muffin from a classic cake is mostly the process and chemical leavening (usually baking soda or baking powder) rather than yeast or egg (though egg can be in the recipe it does not rely on eggs to leaven the recipe entirely like in an angelfood cake. Basically it mix all the wet ingredients together in one bowl, mix all the dry ingredients together in another bowl and add the wet to the dry and don't overmix.
You 2 are a great couple ❤. I love watching your videos and congratulations on your engagement. I knew going into this video that you're gonna miss your hot meals, lol.
Fun thing about the croissant: That's just what the french stole from the austrians/bavarians/swiss. They took what was known in the southern german and german speaking areas as "Gipfel/Hörnchen/Beugel" (or Cornetto in Italy), slapped a whole bunch of butter into it, complicated the dough making process into madness with adding even more butter into it (creating the puff pastry dough base) and copied that pastry with even more butter. But the origin is somewhere or everywhere between southern Germany and the very northern tip of Italy.
In Germany when something helps you with X, X is 90% of the time "Kreislauf" or "circulation". "Kreislauf" is the magic value that measures all health and fitness.
Uyen, you said that german boyfriends parents do almost every time coffe and cake when you visit. Well, it is common courtesy to offer this coffe and cake time when you have visitors that you appreaciate( or at least some cookies or sth.). Most Germans actually abandonned this everyday coffe and cake time nowadays because they don't want to gain weight. It is still a kind of tradition on sunday when the family gathers for a lot of families. Of course there are still families doing it almost everyday but most germans - especially the younger generation does not do it anymore for themselves but only when they have visitors- it is part of the hospitality. Imo it stirrs from war times when food was extremely scarce only rich people could afford coffe and cake(inspired from british tea time). So after the war and when industrialisation hit people became a bit richer and could afford it in order to show off they are well off to others. So this developed from a sunday coffe and cake time to an everyday activity. At those times the beauty standard was still more on properly fed women and men (because this means you have money!) which made it easy to balance this - you also might notice that mostly the very elderly people endulge in coffe and cake very often (if their health allows it). But after the baby boomer generation health problems showed up(diabetis and adipositas) and the beauty standard slowly changed. With this a lot of people abandonned this for health reason, beauty reasons or simply because the could not afford it anymore. It became more popular to go on vacation in other countries so people started saving up for that. The ideal of being rich because you can regularily afford coffe and cake vanished slowly. It remained as a hospitality custom to show off that you spare no expenses for your visitors.
In the 80s when I was there we didn’t have cake every day, but at least 2-3 times a week, for sure on sauna days. My host mother NEVER bought a cake! And, oh look, I am typing it just when you said. 😜

It’s so ironic to me bc I remember my Spanish in-laws saying the opposite: cold feet make you sick. They didn’t like me to walk barefoot on the cold marble floors bc I would catch a cold.
@@sarahlongstaff5101 The difference is you only go for 5-10 minutes trough the cold water not a whole day like you would do on a marble floor. After the Kneipp-Kur you would put your socks and shoes on again and the blood circulation will make them fast warm again ;)
@@sarahlongstaff5101Now, I don't know if there is any merit to any of that, but I think a lot of out saunaculture is about extremes for a short time. Sit in a 70C sauna for 10min, then jump in a 8C pool. Then repeat. Exposing yourself to the cold over extended periods of time is probably not good for you, but extreme cold for a short amount of time is assumed (again: no idea if it has merit) to be good for you.
The right way to use a Kneipbecken is to walk around the pool like a stork: with every step you lift the foot up high .before immersing it in the water again. The cold water und this way of walking improves the circulation of the blood and the venes. Same can be done with the arms in cold water bassins. After the treatment you feel very good.

0:35 so that was the sound the pigeons make? wow, i always heard that sound at school every morning and i thought it was the crows', because it sounded pessimistic to me. idk lol. i'm sure i'm going to learn a lot of new things from this video
Sad birds are pigeons. Crows make a crow sound, their name is onomatopoeic. In German they're called Krähen. The actual sound impression to me is somewhere between the two words. Craaoohw.
When I saw the banana peels, my first thought was, “Oh, you can soak them overnight in water and then use the water for your plants!” Do you happen to do this? It works great to perk up your plants!
The Kneipp water walking has real benefits. Blood circulation, heart health and stuff. Just like showering using cold water would do. Maybe not a thing a 20 year old would care about, but older people can both work on their circulation and also have some resistance training while walking in the water. Very low impact way of exercise.
I live in Canada and pretty much only Asians know about Maggi. Canadians are not familiar with Maggi, but in almost every Asian household you'll find Maggi. We also play board games here.
You two can start eating together by learning other cuisines. That way, it will be foreign to both of you. I'm sure you will be able to find some foods that are to both of your liking in this way. I think perhaps a dish like shakshouka would be a good compromise between both of your likes. Lots of veggies, but also incorporates bread. Fairly sure you could eat it with rice as well and have a good experience. Then you could do one day in a week eating each other's cuisines, to better appreciate your spouse's cultural cuisine, which also gives you an interesting insight to their upbringing. I hope the two of you will continue growing and learning together. Best wishes to you both
You should pour any carbonated bevarage the way german boyfriend did because it allows the carbonation to stay in the liquid better. With beer in particular, too much broam and it's flat; too little broam and you'll feel bloated and eat less. Cool to cold beverages keep carbonation better.
I love these short videos on your life experience living in Germany. My heritage is German and while we are pretty well removed (4th or 5th generation in the US), we do have a lot of German “traditions” we still do. Have never seen that pool thing before at the park. How interesting. And you’ve never had banana bread? We make it often here, it’s best tho with overripe bananas that have turned brown. It’s a way to use up food that would otherwise be thrown out. And I love board games and have been known to play them by myself. I simply play all 4 players……lol. Yes I’m lame. 😪 Keep up the great content!
About the Kneipp Kur (walking in the cold water) As far as I remember it should help with circulation and blood flow. The cooling of your feet and lower leg for the short time has (I believe) tha same idea behind it as when you cahnge your shower von hot to cold and so on (Wechseldusche). Might not be 100% correct, as I only have my memories from like 15 years ago or such^^° As I child we drove 30+min just to go to a spot with Kneipp baths. They had different kinds. My favourite were long rocks, that were like steps you could walk up and down in really shalow water. The water was direkty from a stream in the woods. There was one where you put your hands and lower arms into and one that was deeper (Middle of upper thigh, as a child I was swimming in it) We always kombined it with a lovely picknick as a family. Sadly we never visited again, after my grandpa died. My mother has medical issues, were she can't go into cold water. My grandma can't swim and barely ever went into the water and my friends think it'S boring ^^°

I would love if she came to Dublin!
Oh that's a Swiffer duster! We have that and the pop tin bread cans in the US! Pillsbury is the most well known brand out here!
i gotta say, your videos are so interesting i have been binge watching them since i found this channel. you two are awesome
Your vids are amazing
Real
Made me smile😊 Lol went to put a thumbs up but already had, really should allow us more than one!
Uyen I love your crocheted vest so much it’s so cute. Also, can you try to make Mexican food one day? I’m curious to see what you come up with 🤭
Thank you for your wholesome content! Love you both.
Would also like to see you do Kneippen again. You have to lift your feet out of the water with every step. Make high steps so that your leg is bend in a 90° angle.
The "Kneipp Effekt" is scientifically proven to strenghten the immune system.
❤
Uyen, You’d probably enjoy the US south for chitchatting with folks. The southwest for more fresh vegetables and spicy food. Most of the US in general do not walk quite as much. 😂 You’re less likely to cause shock by not using the right size fork, unless it’s a formal event. Our schnitzel is chicken-fried steak/country-fried steak and is eaten with gravy. Texas cities tend to be more food centric with tons of food options. ❤
All true! Howdy from TX y'all. Fun fact: we have MANY German settlers in the German hill country of Texas (outside of Austin, TX).
i personally think the us west would be way better for her, aside from the weather; because we have many asians in our region. she is at times lacking the asian ingredients, and we have a lot of it. also as a asian american, i haven't met too many nice southern people; and also honestly with recent events... i don't feel safe there (maybe if i got a few friends with me). regardless, i would like them to visit the states at some point; but it seems like they like germany and the eu more.
@@madroze53023 Do they still have some of our German, how do I describe it... "traditions"? :) Like, do they act German "Texanisiert" (texanisized)? ;) Much greetings from Lower Franconia, Germany
People walk all the time in the US. Just not in the South or Midwest.
The US isn't worth going there.
As a non German I have no idea what ur doing but it looks fun
You both did wonderful :) cute and entertaining, you both have such fun chemistry together, Makes others laugh with you, Thank you :)
you guys are so cute
The tiny sausages in the potato soup unlocked a childhood memory for me... mini winnie Würstchenkette :D
I love this video, it was so fun to watch! The complainig... the cake forks...just great!
Oh, where you in the Luisenpark in Mannheim?
It looked so familiar to me 🤔
When my knees were better, we had a picknick each weekend with friends there. Just sitting on a picknick rug, each one brings something to drink and snack and we share it together while playing small boardgames or (most of the time) card games.
Sadly I can't sit on the ground anymore (I can sit on the ground, but I can't get up again xD) In summer we had picknicks in the Luisenpark and in Winter we often were ice skating on the weekends. Miss these things
The Kneipp pool was at Herzogenried Park and the playground at Ida-Dehmel-Ring.
Uyen we call these QUICK BREAD in the USA. or they used to call it this. The category includes a lot of quick usually sweet loaf cakes that people would eat for any meal or snack.
Yes and you can substitute apple sauce, pumpkin add dried fruit and chocolate or nuts. I love quick bread/cake.
@@puggirl415 Im sitting in the USA and have never heard of this. I'm nearly 40.
@@handlesshouldntdefaulttonames So sorry for you. Good luck. Maybe look it up online or at the library.
@@puggirl415 Oh yeah no I did immediately, I was just surprised.
Oh 😮 When the video ends, I felt sad. That much I enjoyed. Thanks!!! 😅
It remained as a hospitality custom to show off that you spare no expenses for your visitors.
that's cool
So true WE did IT only ON Weekend and If WE Had guest over and Loved IT when i was Kid
I'm not so sure if there ever was a time when most people, including the not so wealthy, did this daily.
In the 80s when I was there we didn’t have cake every day, but at least 2-3 times a week, for sure on sauna days. My host mother NEVER bought a cake! And, oh look, I am typing it just when you said. 😜
@@Flo-vn9ty my family did it daily when I was growing up on a farm. But we only had cake on Sundays and bread with toppings the rest of the week. Basically a snack time and chance for the adults to have coffee so the ones working hard outside had enough energy throughout the day. It was also just a nice moment in the day to sit with the whole family and talk about whatever :)
I am an American from New York City. My grandparents immigrated from Eastern Europe over 100 years ago. Thank you for showing us how Germans live an average day. I didn’t realize how similar Germans and this New Yorker are. BTW, love you and your channel
I have the same (similar?) background as you and I think maybe you and I can relate to loving to complain! xD
@joannebione9337 I have a German friend who lived to NYC. When her Mom visit her then she bring few German food and she is Happy.😊
It depends... I'm german and even though many state that Germans eat savoury in the morning I don't know anyone who does...
My grandfather's family moved here from Germany, his siblings were born there he was born here (US). It tickles me to learn that complaining is a German pastime because I always say I got my complaining skills from my Pap! He was the most wonderful man: funny, loving, well liked, and had a knack for complaining (but in a way that no one minded!). ❤
@@myblueheather8240 my dad is German but lived in oversea He never complain, my Hubby is German and live in Germany and is a super complainer. Me Mix and live in Germany and I observe those who complain mostly WHO lived in big Cities. But those who live in small Villages you will never hear them complaining. 😉😂
I love how you two can be silly with each other and it can be fun.
Omgosh wonderful ❤I was smiling during the whole video love it. Please please never reveal German Boyfriends face, I personally think he and you are having to much fun in hiding his face. And it just wouldn't be the same. ❤🥰.
I love how Maggi is to Germans what fish sauce is to Vietnamese
Only for people in Saarland.
I can say that in Berlin it ain't a real thing anymore (some ppl have it but don't use it regularly, most ppl don't have it)
the cold water treatment is called Kneipp-kuren and it is good for your immunsystem, your venes and also can help with sleepproblems
I enjoy doing that but usually I end up with gas problem in my intestines...
Waschlappen are only meant to be used to wash yourself, or your child, but never for furniture.
yeah, you may go over the tiles in the shower after you used it, but never for house cleaning
If you use old T-shirts for cleaning up, you can also use a Waschlappen 🤷
Washandjes we call them in the Netherlands. I can not find them anywhere in the south of Spain where I'm living at the moment. My mom sends them to me when I need new ones, haha. 😂😊

Dutch people used to eat more soup, vegetable soup at the start of dinner. maybe if you are always eating soup you feel a bit dehydrated if you just eat bread, soup stays in your stomach longer than most drinks.
My Husband's Brother lives in Whuppertal, Germany he has lived there for about 50 years even married a German Lady and they have two kids one of each. My Father's Parents were from Germany. You both are so cute together ❣️ AZ, USA 🇺🇸
Uyen your creativity is just so outstanding....eating like a German, you would also take your elbows of the table while eating 🤣🤣🤣
"We're no animals!" 🤣🥰
@@MargitGilliot "Elbows off the table" is proper etiquette and comes from medieval times where lots of people who weren't always friendly to each other sat close together at a table. It prevented accidental shoving which could have started a fight. Nowadays I don't think it's correct to say all Germans observe old table etiquettes. If someone criticised me for it I'd probably never eat with that person again 😅
You both are so cute, and I live vicariously through you.
Socken und Sandalen, du bist wirklich gut integriert xD
This is so cute and fun to watch 🥰
My grandfather on my fathers side liked to eat radishes dipped in salt
Aww.. you both are so sweet to each other..
Uyen amazing recipe use the cresant rolls, roll out dont cut leave flat top with a mixture of cream cheese, cooked spicy ground sausage, green onion, bell pepper cut minced.
How make the mixture cook (1lb) ground sausage then when done and still warm mix in bowl with cream cheese (8oz) and green onoin and half bell pepper mix together. When you have mixture on cresant doug (will need 3 containters) roll into log freeze for 10 min then take out cut into little pinwheels then bake (: Great appitizer!
I only have two things critique here:
First) who puts the schnitzel on the deep plate and the salad on the shallow plate T.T this grinds my gears.
Second) The eating times are all weird! You have to eat at 8, 12 and 18 o'clock. Every 6 hours on the dot. Everything else is blasphemy xD
8 to 12 is 4 hours difference...
Every three hours, breakfast at 9, lunch at 12, cake at 3 and dinner at 6. 😄
@@ParanoidMarvinMk2 But it feels like at least 6 hours
0:35 so that was the sound the pigeons make? wow, i always heard that sound at school every morning and i thought it was the crows', because it sounded pessimistic to me. idk lol. i'm sure i'm going to learn a lot of new things from this video
Sad birds are pigeons. Crows make a crow sound, their name is onomatopoeic. In German they're called Krähen. The actual sound impression to me is somewhere between the two words. Craaoohw.
@@jackscheppert true, they actually say their name with their sound. thanks for the information
Love German's kneipp water pool... Their culture on hydrotherapy is enormous and their schools on it are the best in the world ❤. Love from Italy 🇮🇹❤
Uyen and German Boyfriend: thank you so much for sharing your cultural and personal insights. I love your videos.
Your complaining lesson was great fun. You reLl are becoming a German Vietnamese Superstar.❤️

2:09 What kind of cultural desecration is this? There is no such thing as bad weather/rainy weather, only bad clothes.
Words I live by!

About the Kneipp Kur (walking in the cold water)
As far as I remember it should help with circulation and blood flow. The cooling of your feet and lower leg for the short time has (I believe) tha same idea behind it as when you cahnge your shower von hot to cold and so on (Wechseldusche). Might not be 100% correct, as I only have my memories from like 15 years ago or such^^°
As I child we drove 30+min just to go to a spot with Kneipp baths.
