I called my brother and said Have you heard of this band called Guns N Roses. He said Yeah the guitar player has one of my guitars. He says " I know them, they used to come into my shop. One day the guitar player came in and said, Max, we just got a record contract with Geffen Records, we're going in the studio and I don't even have a decent guitar to play. Can I buy a guitar from you? Max says my guitars are all made to order. You can go ahead and borrow my Max guitar, which I made for myself. Slash recorded A for D, came back later, and bought the guitar. That was the story Max told me, before G n R became so famous. When my brother died he left about 10 or so of his guitars. He died without a will. Unfortunately, my two sisters who are Scientologists,Tina and Michelle stole all of his guitars.
On that Gibson R9, that’s some pretty terrible binding bleed. Original 59s never had that bad of bleeding. To be honest, they didn’t have a lot of binding bleed really at all. It’s only been a modern Custom ship thing that I’ve ever seen. Which it looks horrendous and I’d be sending that one back if I were you guys.
I painted my replica using as close to original methods as I could research, and it didn't bleed like that. Just some minor yellowing I can only assume that kind of bleed would come from getting in too much of a hurry.
@@qua7771 exactly. What the Custom Shop doesn’t understand is that yes there were errors from factory on 59s, but not the ones that they are using. It’s awful and why I don’t even mess with them. I like their other models that aren’t the 59 reissues mainly for that reason alone. They are awesome guitars but not worth 8k with that kind of bleed happening .
The les paul slash pawned was the "hunterburst"..it was a quilt top and MAX did not build that...he sill has his 2 MAX's One MAX appeared on the welcome to the jungle video but the Derrig never appeared in a GnR video until I believe it was since I don't have yu from Spaghetti incident. The Derrig was used to record the overdubs on appetite as well as the sweet child intro but the majority of the album was recorded with a rented SG.
I wonder if he used Mazzuchelli inlays, they’re the Italian company who supplied Gibson for all the 58-60 Les Pauls and beyond. Gibson doesn’t use their product anymore that’s why the new ones look like mother of toilet seat.
The hardest thing to replicate are the inlays-as they are not made anymore thats how you can tell the fakes hands down also the original finger boards were Brazilian rose wood which is extremely illegal to import now,so none of the gibson burst custom shop guitars are accurate!!!!!!

There are interviews out there on Kris Derrig with his brother Dale. It was Kris's guitar that saved Appetite for Destruction, Slash didn't have a Les Paul at that point. Kris graduated from Berkeley College of music and was an extremely good guitar player himself. His brother stated he used to go with him searching for 100 year old maple from barns. Kris used to spit on the wood to test it.

@@mikecooper8465 actually American Master builder Scott Lewis and American luthiers are at the Qingdao Epiphone facility and the Asian luthiers that are there also have no less than 10 experience Scott Lewis isn't going to have bad craftsman working for him that's for sure..Lewis was also Master builder for Gibson and has been at the Qingdao facility since 2002 and with Epiphone/Gibson 46 years
It’s a replica of a model that the company did not offer at the time. Therefore, there was no opportunity to purchase it from the company. No denial of revenue, and, importantly, no degradation of the brand by the use of inferior materials, or devaluation of the official product. Gibson is aware of Mr. Baranet’s work, and has never expressed discontent, or instituted legal proceedings. It’s safe to assume that his boutique editions of that guitar, combined with Kris Derrig’s version, are responsible for the rebirth of the model. We’re it not for Max, and Kris, the Les Paul guitar wouldn’t have had the renaissance it has. Truth be told, the dozens of Slash models that Gibson currently offers, are actually based upon these ‘fakes,’ and not their own design team. So…perhaps it’s Gibson who’s faking quality? As Kris has passed, and Max has retired, there is no opportunity for continued potential for counterfeiting. What’s done, is done, and these pieces are not purporting to be Gibson Les Paul guitars. They are clearly identified as reproductions. Not unlike a lithograph is to a canvas painting. You buy a print, it’s a fake. You still buy it. Call them what you want. Given the opportunity to own one, you would enjoy the experience. All said, the value is dictated by the consumer market. If Gibson made such an instrument at the time, there would be reason for acrimony. They didn’t. And so…these are artisan pieces.. Thanks for watching.
I built my 58 burst relplica down to the specs of a max. Its got hobduran mahogany a d brazilian rosewood and bartlett stuff and the list goes on. I built it 10yrs ago and i think im building another. Its about 1300 in just parts and paint to do it right. Labor doesent bother me. I wouldent want to pay for the labor lol
Nice Les Paul! Sadly, watching this was disappointing. Right away he goes into the "tonewood" BS! These guitars were originally desired by artists who wanted that Gibson with the two humbuckers PERIOD! Sorry but, they were not designed by a bunch of operation paperclip nazi tonewood scientists armed with slide rules in a room full of chalkboards. Gibson dropped them because they were not making them more of the almighty dollar! The main A-Holes who push this garbage are the guitar sellers and the lumber sellers. Lumber sells for the going board foot rate when I'm building a coffee table. But, when it's for a guitar it suddenly becomes magical tonewood and costs 3 times as much or more. I love Les Pauls as much as the next guy. I'm just so sick the lies and the morons who buy the lies.

That is a great guitar. It does have Brazillian rosewood fret board and Bumblebee caps. I personally wound the PAF replica pickups that are in it.

I have a left handed Kriss Derrig 59 replica, he made it in the 80's , God rest his soul.
Still nowhere near being worth $30,000, IMHO.
The market dictates value. Like a Picasso, or Shelby Cobra. Art makes the market.
