    Hey Sean! I just love the part of the video where gnome Sean goes into hyper speed to cool music!! Property is looking good. Most people have no idea the amount of work necessary to plan and transform raw bush into a stable and reliable living space. Compaction is normally done in layers rather than stiffening up the top inch of a six inch fill. And it’s important for the gravel to have moisture in it for adequate compaction. As the gravel dries out it will stiffen up. The best ‘road gravel’ called A-base contains some clay to bind the gravel particles. Run the equipment until you tire out; you cannot over compact it!

    • @SeanInAlaska
      @SeanInAlaska  4 роки тому +1

      Jim, thanks for the pointers! I did not point out that the compactor actually has a water reservoir on the front of it to make sure you are adding moisture when required, I opted to skip that step as the gravel was still pretty "Wet" when I did it! I should have talked to you before I did this hahahah....it looks like I went from about 6 inches to 4 inches after compaction and I do plan on adding more layers in the spring to build up a much stronger base!

    • @jimbertrand2499
      @jimbertrand2499 4 роки тому +1

      @@SeanInAlaska No problem Sean - your put run gravel was definitely wet enough! When you add more ask your supplier if he can get A-base. He'll know what it us. When you compact A-base it will firm a seal cap that will shed water unless it is saturated (like at spring breakup). Just try to not drove on it when it is really wet or saturated. It will dry pretty quickly. Great job Sean!

    I'm putting in my first driveway right now. I needed about 60 yards of fill, so now I have it all spread out and graded more or less. It comes off a hill at about a 10 degree angle. I spread all the fill using a wheelbarrow and one of those trusty rakes. It has been a fun project. I buried a few yards of broken concrete from cleaning up someone's property instead of paying dump fees. I am going to rent a plate compactor. I was going to spread out 2-3" of gravel, and on top of the gravel add a truck load of 5/8 minus with fines. I wonder if I need some gravel before adding the 5/8 or if I can just add the 5/8 which is a smaller gravel.

    • @SeanInAlaska
      @SeanInAlaska  3 роки тому +1

      I am not an expert, I am guessing though that the 5/8 minus will work without larger stuff underneath. The only worry would be how much heavy traffic you will get. 1 year in and my driveway is the exact same as last year, but I am the only one who uses it.

    I know this is an old video but since gravel seems to be a never ending saga of repair annually have you ever considered recycled crushed asphalt as a base? I use it on driveway approaches because I can hav one guy on a propane torch heating up while I compact it. Obviously heating it up would be a challenge for just you but even without heat it pack nice. Here the recycled asphalt here in my state is cheap

      @@SeanInAlaska I’m sure prices are regional but I get 14 cubic yards of millings for around $600. That and a skid steer will take care of about 30 drive approaches.

    • @SeanInAlaska
      @SeanInAlaska  Рік тому

      @Volusia1 yeah, here they can be a bit pricey, I can get 1 load of inch minus gravel for 100 dollars delivered. No idea what the asphalt would be yet

  • @KeoniKoa
    @KeoniKoa Рік тому +2

    Hi Sean, great video! Question, how many inches of gravel did you put down and what kind?
    Also, you probably know already, but the "steam roller" you'd be using for rolling the driveway would be a vibratory compactor. They vibrate violently as they flatten. I'll be renting one for the house pad I'll be compacting in lifts. And although it's not necessary, I'll probably use it for my driveway as well. I gotta go 1,100 feet at 16 feet wide.
    I could use the plate compactor for the driveway, but goodness, 1,100 feet, that would be a workout.
    Peace brother!

      I just asked for a plate compactor when I rented it, they asked if I wanted a small one or a large one, I went with the small. I would guess it weighed well over 400 pounds...I could not pick it up. I did though use 2. 2x8s as a ramp and I walked it back onto my truck pretty easily while it was running, those things climb pretty darn well.
