My guess is Rudd was meant to be possessed later in the film but they cut it because it didn’t work. It’s a little weird that he just disappears for almost an entire day when you’d think his first action would be to go to the temple and free Gozer

It was teased throughout the movie that he was present in the house and when we finally see Egon's hand grab the hand of Phoebe to help her steady her aim, the camera spins and we see Egon helping her. Man does it hit hard. From that moment on, every time he was on screen. The tears just kept coming. Luckily I was the only person in the theater so I didn't have to keep silent or feel shame.

I did like this movie. But I totally agree with you about how off-putting it was having characters we like, and the movie doesn't disagree with, have such animosity towards Egon. You can't justify that big of a character arc from the Egon we know, and they even show clips of, when we are just told it happened. This is a movie, you need to SHOW DON'T TELL! And if you can't show it because that would take an entire movie for that kind of arc, and the actor has passed away, don't have him be so different! They could have figured out a better reason for him to be estranged from his family and friends without having him be cruel to them.

My personal headcanon on why nobody seems to remember the incidents in the first movie is that the ghosts didn't show up on film, and even if the Stay Puft Kaiju could be recorded video cameras were much rarer in the 1980's so not many people may have been able to capture footage of it, so only ACTUAL eye witnesses could even be certain that it really happened, and after 3 decades other stuff came up so it was just a blip in the news cycle that eventually got forgotten.
As for Ghostbusters 2, they just frikken retconned that movie out of continuity, NOBODY is going to forget the Statue of Liberty strolling downtown and busting open the roof of the the museum of art.

Ernie Hudson is going to be involved with a lot more Ghostbusters stories, he just said he's in the middle of making a new Ghostbusters video game right now, I'm assuming with the new cast to an extent so we have that to look forward to. I think they're going to use elements from Ghostbusters II as well for the next movie since I read that Jason Reitman was throwing around ideas and the possibility that Vigo could return.

Who didn'tget teary eyed when Egon showed up? I honestly feel like Raye made sense. Often times sadness wears anger as a mask. It can be easier to take that energy and throw it out into the world instead of actually grieving the loss of a friend. I think the Starbucks line is a reflection of that mindset. He knows he doesn't have access to the firehouse but doesn't want to think about it. Doing this he assumes it's a Starbucks because Starbucks takes over a lot of vacant buildings. His heart is still soft to these things and the act of engaging with or acknowledging loss directly is still to painful. As a result he needs to put distance between him and the full reality.

I DID notice that it kinda of just...ignored Ghostbusters II and feels much more like a direct sequel to just the original film, but maybe they didn't want to get *too* heavy with the references to the original films and since Gozer was more relevant to the plot they just stuck with that.

I've seen some people adore this film, and others despise it. I'm . . . right in the middle. I don't think it works storytelling wise, as the details don't add up, all the callbacks were a bit much - why Gozer again? gah - and I didn't take to the new characters. Also, big missed opportunity having a town founded by Gozer worshipers and NOT having the adults in the town not do a heel turn and prepare their return.
But the actors were great for what they had to work with, it looks BEAUTIFUL, and while I have some quibbles about the ethical issues of re-creating deceased actors with CGI . . . I did tear up seeing the four of them side by side one more time. It kinda works but in the way DX and the nWo facing off at Wrestlemania 31 did; it don't make much sense, happened too late, but was cool!

I feel the same. I was really vibing with it in the early parts. The atmosphere of small town life was just as well delivered as New York life in the first 2, and I liked that this actually had a better sense of humor. Like, actual jokes instead of completely relying on improv. But much of that good will goes right down the drain the moment they decide to bring back Gozer and that sent in two at least two points for me. I really dislike the allergicness of these revivals with using new things instead of going back down the well. I don't care if it's supposed to be "risk adverse", they are standing to make a lot anyway, might as well try to put something new out there.

First the fact that it took so long to get a True Sequel for a trilogy , the fact that harold passed and ivan reitman and lastly i dont know if it was nostalgia from when i was younger enjoying the franchise but seeing Egon had me in tears pretty hard more then the character it felt like someone really close to me passed and this movie was in a way reminiscing on the past and wishing there was more time spent because of missing that person . when i was a kid i was on the border between reality and fantasy and always felt safe because of the ghostbusters even calling the number in the movie unaware that 555 numbers werent active numbers.

I have to admit, this movie's climax made me cry (and for me that's pretty significant as it is rare for a film to have that kind of effect on me). It was just such a beautiful tribute and for me personally as a Ghostbusters fan who was born in 85, it was a film that built upon what came before (sure it may dip a little bit into the nostalgia for some people and some might find the Who You Gonna Call? line a bit forced, but I myself found it to be an okay callback, especially in the context of the following scene, and its not like any Ghostbusters fan would be surprised that the line is in a Ghostbusters film).
I also like that the OG Ghostbusters stuck with their decision from the original film that going forward if anyone asked them if they were a GOD they would say yes (after Ray's honest answer of No in the original film's climax got them shocked with finger lightning by Gozer). Sure some might find it silly or forced, but its nice to see them acknowledge little details like that.

Not to blow any trumpets, but I wrote a GB novel called Ghostbusters ReGeneration that delivers what it sounds like you and Alison wanted from a modern GB III. It doesn't have weird plot holes that Afterlife did, like Egon siring a daughter pre-GB 1 and no-one believing Egon despite clear evidence of a Gozer temple!

A few notes from my experience.
    - I watched this movie dubbed. It's usually not my preference, but due to time constraints is the only optin I had. And then I was pleasantly surprised to hear they got the same cast that did the original dubbing in this region, which certainly tingled my nostalgia bones, as I've watched the original movies dubbed more times than I have in their original language. When the Ray voice actor recites the "Egon Spengler can rot in hell" line you can hear his voice break a bit in a way that Dan Aykroyd's doesn't, and I feel it fits the situation a bit better.
    - I liked the ending fine, but I think they went a bit too overboard on it.
    - Maybe it's silly, but I'm legitimately disappointed that at seeing Egon's ghost the other Ghostbusters didn't seriously reconsider the meaning of their job, seeing as they don't normally just let ghosts go, they capture them (whatever happens in the cartoon not really being canon, I believe). It would have been interesting for them to at least consider the idea of helping ghosts move on rather than just capturing them.

Honestly, my only complaint is ignoring the video game. Details are already shaky with GB2 and all, so making it fit is rough, but I just hate it ignores Harold Ramis’ last performance as Egon. I’d change some bits and details, but overall I really loved it.

The movie was phenomenal. Egon was always my favorite so that end scene wrecked me. I was a huge fan of Harold Ramos and actually shed some tears when I heard the man died, it was like losing a hero in some ways. And I sadly felt the same when I heard about Ivan Reitman, without their films I wouldn’t be the person I am today. I feel that all those things you love as a child start to feel like memories, not just the movies but how they made you feel watching them. Well at least for some.

There's an unusual bit of life imitates art, or, here, Art Imitates Life, in this case:
Ramis and Murray had a falling out during Groundhog Day and didn't speak for many years.
Towards the end of his life, when he was sick, Murray was encouraged to bury the hatchet and visit him while he could. At that point Ramis lost the ability to speak so Murray would had to do the talking.
Seeing Venkman catch up & say goodbye to him here, and having Egon just smile and nod made me think of that and brought a tear to my eye.

  • @johnpublic7796

Better idea: Open on Ray in the middle of a supernatural situation. It ends and he gets a call...We hear Winston or Jeannine saying Egon died. Get everyone they can from first Ghostbusters movies at Egon's funeral. Ray discovers Big Supernatural Thing killed Egon. This causes the Ghostbusters to come back together. Maybe have Dana's son, Oscar become a new Ghostbuster. Maybe Ray has a kid. Egon has a kid. Winston has a kid. They don't all have to be Ghostbusters. After two movies, it doesn't make sense that they'd just go out of business. There'd be real world research, funding, other Ghostbuster locations and rival companies. There'd be an academic/science side that'd study what ghosts and other supernatural beings are and what they want, how they tick, etc. They could pass the torch to adults that actually make sense.

I liked the movie, but I really had a problem with the ending. Not the Egon part, but the rest. Why set up a new team and train them for 2 hours on how to catch ghosts and then take it all away from them in the end because Winston has money and is sentimental and took everything back to NY and just left the family there with nothing. I just got a selfish ending vibe from it, and it was like the gatekeepers won. Nobody else can be a “real ghostbuster” unless it’s one of the original 4. It just hit a sour note with me

Two things. First, as far as nobody really being phased by Stay Puft in the second movie oh, I always took that as a joke on the fact that nothing phases New Yorkers. If I'm not mistaken there's even a line from the mayor where he says something like but what-have-you-done-for-me-lately.
As for eons trap not working, I think Allison kind of nails it from a theme standpoint and from a general standpoint, if you think about it everyone says the same thing. Egon was in a rush, he was running out of time, he was panicking. He didn't have time to test any of that stuff, and it's outright implied that it's only ever going to work once. He took everything they had and was working on his own cobbled everything together in both locations.
I don't have an issue with the animosity all of the surviving Ghostbusters feel about Egon, I just feel like they didn't really adequately lay things out in the movie. I'm guessing a novelization probably goes into more detail. I also suspected that the apologies given to him by Bill Murray was a little bit of truth in advertising as he and Harold Ramis had not spoken in a very long time

I think one big problem, why we rarely ever get actual great sequels to old franchises is because it's a fine line to tread between getting so far away from the original, it doesn't feel like it has any right to bear that name. On the other hand, there is the danger that the makers are so attached and in awe of the original, that the film becomes too sappy and self-serioue (this is especially a problem with sequels to movies, that didn't take themselves too seriously - like Ghostbusters).

However, I wasn't expecting to actually cry when I saw them. These guys were my childhood and Egon was my favorite. It was the physical representation of my childhood dying off. One of my favorite parts was when Phoebe got pissed at the cop and turned on the pack ready to blast him. She was ready to end him.

A problem I had with ghostbusters afterlife , was the way that Ray and Egon ended their friendship. It felt really out of character for both of them. I can see peter and winston, parting company with Egon for acting weird, but not Ray. Ray owns an occult book store, he can recite biblical doomsday prophecies from memory and his reaction to seeing a real ghost for the first time was child like glee- if Egon was freaking out and talking about an impending apocalypse, Ray would be excited and want to hear all about it. Besides that complaint, ghostbusters afterlife is a fun film.

Maybe I read too much into it, but he was trying to stop the apocalypse, so his daughter could have a future, so the whole world could have a future. Which messes me up inside because everyone even his friends tear him apart, and only he knows what the risks are. People treat him like he is crazy when he's really trying to save a world that isn't willing to back him up so his daughter can survive. 😢
