Holding a paper towel on the inside of where you are scraping will help keep debris from flying or falling into places you don't want it to

I’ve used throttle body cleaner to help get gunk off engine. Also rags not paper towels.

I think your air conditioner is not working only because of the button on the dashboard is worn out and no longer working. I have the same truck that had the AC problem. It turns out it was just the button on the dashboard to activate the AC pump and nothing else.
You sure get dressed up to work on your truck there.
