Just a note about Cameron's bike: Heighten the saddle an inch or two. He should be able to lean a bit to the side and touch the ground with the forward part of his foot.
He can then use more leg power while cycling. Groeten uit Zutphen.

hahaha..love the video, but the first thing i thought when i saw the kid on the bike was..."this bike it to small for him..his knee is to high on the up way". The knee can, at most, have a 90 decrees angle, and then it has to be on the way back. His knee now almost hit 80 decrees.
Nice that you and your family are here now. Good life, good decision.

  • @ReneAltena
    @ReneAltena 2 роки тому +31

Just a tip: either the 'saddle' of the bike is too low for your son, or the bike is too small. Your son's legs are bent too much. That makes him 'wiggle' while riding. So go to a bike shop and ask to adjut the bike to your son's length. It should improve is steadiness whilst riding.

I like your videos a lot, because of your enthousiasm, genuine curiosity and open mindedness. Very rare for a typical American (except for the enthousiasm). I was a bit shocked when you said you don’t feel welcome on a children’s playground in the US because of your race. Although there is too much raceism here as well (any is too much), I hope you feel welcome. People like you and your family, who want to integrate and contribute, are a great asset to our society!

Great to hear that many Americans who moved to the Netherlands are having more positive than negative experiences. I moved the other way around (from the Netherlands to the USA) and for me it’s strange to see very few kids playing outside and parents quickly wanting to call the police when they see kids without supervision. I loved growing up in the Netherlands and being able to play outside always. It didn’t matter if it was hot or cold, dry, wet or snowy, I was always playing outside with friends. Everyone used their bikes and playgrounds were everywhere. I must say most neighborhoods I go to in New Jersey also have a playground and most of them are well maintained but I rarely see them used and when used half the time it’s by teenagers just hanging around.
Dordrecht is a nice town although there are some spots that are - to Dutch standards - not as safe as the average city. It has a great history and is one of the oldest cities of the country. I wish your family a prosperous future in your new country 🙏

I think it is a shift in the US over the last 2 decades. Growing up in the late 80s / early 90s we spent more time outside with friends, playgrounds, neighborhoods, whatever then we ever did at home. I now have 4 kids with the oldest being 13 and it's still a challenge to get them outdoors and we live in a very safe neighborhood.
I think that is the trend for suburbia in the US. That said there are always exceptions and things can vary drastically from city to city / state to state. The saddest thing is that too often the neighborhoods where you do see kids out now are incredibly segregated, poor, or both. In the poorer areas of our country if the crime is high, these are places the parents really have good reason for not wanting their kids roaming the streets but they don't really have much choice. They're working multiple jobs just to make ends meet and try to provide. I've never been to the Netherlands but I really admire what I've seen and read online. I've seen some videos of people stating pay equality is much closer and a high majority of people make something like 30k annually. I've seen American's in my financial position balk at such numbers "How could anyone live on that?".... if I can a clear path to citizenship and employment there and my family was on board with it I think I'd leave the close-minded crazy here and just embrace it. I get that everywhere has their issues and you can't go by just what you see online but I need some culture change in my life!

Riding a bike is like getting your first car as a (late) teen in the US. It comes with a certain feeling of freedom, independence and trust (from your parents). My mom would ride around with me the first couple years (from the age of 3 untill 7 or 8? Before i was allowed to make small trips alone like to the grocery store). She would ask me to contribute to makeing traffic decisions like: Is it safe to cross this road right now or do we need to wait for a little bit more space between the last and next car? Can the cars properly see us and do they have enough reaction time when we do this and this? I know a lot of people who did this with their children, and also see a lot of children of parents who obviously didnt. Which often results in very close calls. Or even the nightmare of every parent, a call from the police or paramedics that something happened to your child.

Great that he's adjusting well! We generally raise our kids to be independent and this lifestyle is very much supported by the way we design our cities and towns. Most things are close by. Not just playgrounds, but probably also friends' places, supermarkets, sport clubs, schools and (for later) retail stores, parks, museums, pubs, bars and restaurants and such. And it's all connected using safe and ubiquitous bicycle infrastructure. No 5 lane highway sized stroads and giant parking lots to cross. I'm not surprised so many Americans see the car as their "freedom vehicle", because in a sense it literally is. I can't imagine what it's like being essentially cooped up in a "it's a great place to raise children" McMansion on the edge of town, with nowhere to go without being shuttled around all the time. Only when you are 16 and get your license, you are finally free to go where you want to go. But it doesn't have to be that way, as you can now experience firsthand. Enjoy NL!

Please don't take this as criticism, just as a suggestion. If you plan to stay here, you might look into a bit more into what we Dutch do for breakfast. Pancakes aren't seen as a breakfast food but rather a dinner and poffertjes certainly aren't. Those are basically a treat. It might be a good idea, and much healthier too, to get your son (and the rest of your family) to eating bread for breakfast and lunch as a norm, maybe cereals one or twice a week and you certainly can do those pancakes or poffertjes on like a Sunday or on special occasions, for sure. the thing is, that way he'll grow up with even more like experiences as his Dutch classmates and essentially, will be more Dutch by the time he'll go to secondary education. That would be a very good thing for him later in life.

It is a fun museum and in summer you have people acting as is if they are from a different age. The ticket for the steamtrain is included if you buy ab museum yearcard. It is about 65 euro for a grownup and about 22,50 for a kid. You can visit 400 museums with this card. If you go to Amstedam to the van Gogh and Rijksmuseum you have already paid the museumcard. You can use it for one year. The Dordrechts museum is aso a great museum which you can visit for fteen if you bought a museumcard.

Good to see hes enjoying his bike , just one tip for children still growing get a medium sized bike , if you go to a bicycle store they can advise on the size for your son , so he can enjoy it a few years before needing a new one.
Also dont get a brand new one if hes going to middle school and any school after as those bikes will be abused and damaged stolen etc . A second hand bike or older bike is often perfered .
Also there are some great sports to enroll in .

His bike is too small. The height of the seat should be adjusted to a height where your knees almost fully stretch when the treadle is at its lowest point. Then adjust the handles to a comfortable position accordingly.
The toilet position on a bike (where your knees are not below your hips at the highest position), makes you use a lot more energy for you to make the treadles go around and your hips and bottom hurt. Also remember that the bigger the wheels (and thinner), the easier you go forward,, depending on your height. So when your 5' something, use 24" wheels, below 6' use 26" wheels and above 6', use 28" wheels.
When stopping in front of a light, you should be able to tiptoe for balance or get of the saddle briefly with your feed flat.
In the Netherlands, we just hold a pole instead where available.
    Missing your videos btw....

For small kids the rules are a bit different, they have to be able to get their feet to the ground while sitting on the saddle. Knees to the steer differs per bike. There are some brands that don't use the standard full size parts for kids bikes which makes the ride more comfortable. Most cheaper to kids bikes have the knees to the steer problem unfortunately.

Biking is great for kids and its something parents and kids to together. The biking rules, traffic rules, are tought on schools as well. They have to do a traffic test and are tutored during school-time.
There are fixed, yeap organized ;-), routes for these exams so you can also practice with them. (Check out close to school the blue signs at the streetlights) Also the bike needs to fit the size of the kid and needs to be fully functional, lights/brakes/reflectors/etc.
This exame gives them also the courage to go to highschool, as these are normally further away then the primary-schools and parents are not ‘chaperoning’ the kid to school anymore !! (They are big kids now you know :-)))
