One of my favorite video games hoaxes that became reality was the rumor of Ermac in MK 1. Some fans digging in the games code found that under a line of code that said Reptile Battles was the phrase “Ermac.” Naturally being in the Stone Age that was the 90’s where computer knowledge wasn’t as wide spread as it is now, people misinterpreted it as a secret *secret* character you can fight and unlock, instead of just an abbreviation of the term “Error Macro.” Midway took the piss out of this rumor in MK 2 by having secrets in the game joking about his existence even out right saying that he doesn’t exist. But like how small jokes from the past become our present reality, they finally made him a playable character in MK 3 and has been a fan favorite ever since.
It always interesting and fun to see developers actually acknowledge the hoaxes and rumors of their titles within their titles in various ways, both big and small. It's so easy to forget the people making these games are, in fact, people who likely are at least somewhat aware of the greater trends within their fan base's circles. I dunno, it's kinda nice when it happens on occasion.
The Pokemon section reminded me about the fact that the final evos of the gen 5 starters were leaked, someone attempted to disprove it with evidence that sorta supported those to be fake, only for them to actually be the gen 5 starters final evos.

Someone decided to make a fake trailer for a DS port of Mario Galaxy for a school project or whatever before Galaxy was even released, but they decided to have fun with it by posting their work online. For 2007 standards and keeping in mind that the person didn't even know what the final product would look like, it was very well made. It was the first truly high quality hoax I had ever experienced, and considering that Mario Galaxy is my favorite Mario game, it drove me nuts.
The 17th colossus is still probably our favorite gaming rumor of all time because there was actually a sense of legitimacy to it, give how the world was so big, the fact there was evidence of other colossi in the game at one point of development, to the fact that one cut colossus is still in the game somewhat. It was just an interesting rumor, that pay off in a way with the remake, as the Sword of Dormin and the enlightenments were put into the game because people were still exploring the Forbidden Lands (and thr Sword could be considered a colossus if you think about it). And fans are still interested in the idea of more colossi given that two big fan projects are being worked on, with the goal of bringing those cut colossi back.

This was brought to attention not too long before the first movie came out and Maril was featured in the Pikachu's Vacation short.

(Also, coincidentally, they are also the reason every MMO suddenly announced they were opening up official vanilla servers in 2019-2020, because Disney tried to sue them for copyright infringement by preserving the game they game they shut down and made completely unavailable... *And Lost.* Setting the precedent that gamers were now allowed to play and maintain online games that were no longer available from the developers. Meaning developers couldn't just send a threatening email to fan servers anymore, and if they wanted to keep their players on their servers and paying for their games, they would need to actually offer the game to play.
