Thanks for the video, you gave me insights. I can't believe I fixed my unit, in the bottom, front of the transport a plastic tab securing the spring broke off. Disassembly to the location was tough, soldering iron staked on the very small tab from your video tip. I found the tab in the case on first disassembly. I was chasing a 'red herring', a black spring found in the case, probably twanged during manufacture. We'll see if the staking holds.

At least you didn't have to spend a whole day re-aligning it or re-doing the timing (from scratch).
Looks like a relatively straightforward repair. Another one working.
IMHO auto head cleaners are a bad idea - whenever I've serviced a VCR I usually remove the head cleaner (if it has one fitted) as these tend to go hard with age and can damage the heads and/or score the drum plus I also recommend to the owner(s) not to use cheap-ass supermarket brand videotapes or head cleaning cassettes as they do more harm than good.

Today I resumed my JVC HD- rr 949 after a few years I didn't pay a look at it.
Whe I tried to load a tape it didn't and after a few seconds went into stand by.
Looking around for help I found this video so I was confident to open the device.
I did it and after a few tests I can say that I can load a tape manually
(with my hands, turning the white gear on the left of the loading block)
and then the tape plays back normally and all the other stuff works.
If I eject, the unloading mechanism doesn't move and after a few seconds the VCR goes on stand by.
Would you be so kind to give me some advice on where to look to troubleshoot this problem?
Is the load/unload motor the one I can see on the right, just in front of the right low screw of the drawer?
I see that one starting and stopping.
Thank you (from a frightened ghost village at 30km from Milan...)

Nice Work. Thanks for sharing. 1 Question please. I have a few VCR's and 1 thing I see ONLY in JVC units it that small round disc about 1 inch diameter, at the top left near the spinning heads. It spins rapidly when the tape is inserted and moving past the heads. What is it? And why do I only see it in JVC machines?

As long as it is dry yes. Using paper to clean line this doesn't leave an excessive amount of liquid behind. Also I am using 99% IPA so it evaporates really fast. Most drugstore stuff is only 70% and that takes much longer to evaporate.

Your boss was stupid, anything that could produce fine threads was a danger to fine brittle heads, he needed a good slap lol.

Don't ask me how I know that. I don't even remember seeing that movie, but i do remember the end credits and the show of the film director posing at the end waving at the camera as the credits rolled. Must have been at a buddies place and he said check this out music from peoples court or something and put on the end of the tape. Hilarious because every time i hear that music i get a flashback and chuckle to think that a big time tv show would make an oops like that.
