This was an unexpected DISASTER. How NOT to build a deck.

- I certainly didn't expect this past week to go like this!
I knew we had wanted to re-surface our deck this spring/summer, but I didn't really think it was going to start this soon. What was supposed to be a fairly straightforward re-surfacing of the deck has turned into a bit of a nightmare. An accidental fire on our deck last summer literally put the fire under our butts to get this deck done this year, rather than put it off for another season or two, so I am a true believer that things happen (or don't happen) for a reason. I don't think this whole deck would have lasted another season.
And things get worse.
Thanks for watching. I guess this is my life and project for the next month, or two, or three ...
One thing I've learned over the years is that when you can finally SEE the rot on a deck, its already too late. On the bright side, we get a house rescue/deck building series now! You're incredible Michelle, keep up the great work!
Hello, Devient la cabane sur la Falaise
Paris vous salut 🤗👍
What an outstanding partner you are. Besides the the normal living together, but also somebody who can take charge and get things done no matter what Steve is so lucky to have you in his life. What a beautiful relationship.
I love your attitude and the way that you just buckle down and go to work when problems arise. Thanks for bringing us into your life.
Thank you mosquito for giving Michy the opportunity to show off the pythons!
I have recently had the privilege of witnessing your remarkable journey in building your cabin and your trip to Japan. You and Steve demonstrate a profound resourcefulness and ingenuity in addressing a wide array of technically challenging issues. Your unwavering composure in the face of complexity, whether on the boat or in the midst of reconstructing part of your property, is truly admirable. You both possess the rare ability to thoughtfully consider how a problem can be solved and then tenaciously work towards that solution, no matter the arduousness of the task. The synergy you exhibit, whether working as a team or as individuals, is nothing short of inspirational. Watching your endeavors is a testament to the power of determination and collaboration.
Wow! What a lovely thoughtful comment! Thank you so much!
is that Michelle inspires you to rule 100%
There’s two types of contractors in the world
1st type - don’t care if it’s on the print or not just want to get done and paid
2nd type- treat the home as they were building it for their parents- follow best building practices regardless of time or expense and converse with homeowners regarding potential problems
LOOKING DAMN GOOD MICHELLE!!! SERIOUS GUNS!
Wow, what a nightmare but you Michelle are a trooper and just never quit! Good luck and looking forward to seeing the next chapter! 💪✌🏼❤️🙏🏼
We applaud you and all the work you do, especially for all the dogs (& cat) 😊 LOVE the love you have for them
@xback40verland38 - agreed - leader of the pack CAT.
Damn, that sucks, Michelle... knowing you, you'll have a brand new deck that will last forever! We're all here to lend moral support.
Oh, mY!!! You had your hands full with the animals!! Not to make light of the issue; you're going to have plenty of firewood. Good grief, what a horrendous amount of work!! 😲 Bless your heart...😘
Hi Michelle. Too bad about the deck. Seems like you are handling it like the trooper you are. Your amazing in so many ways. I know you and the deck will come out of this on top. I have faith in you. Great seeing the hound gang. Michelle your are one gorgous lady head to toe no matter what your up too. Steve is one lucky man. Until the next video. Stay safe and happy. ❤
I understand completely. I have dealt with wooden deck problems for many years. So I finally went to other materials that are much more resistant to water damage.
You're lucky that you caught it when you did! I've seen similar decks (improperly installed as well) totally calapse! So it's great that you avoided such a catastrophe. I got a kick out of your expression as you popped the beverage can! Priceless!
Dang it girl! Terrible things happening while Steve is out of the country! Shame on the company that build the deck!
Hi Michelle at least this time the construction will be done correct, its not a problem for you, everything will be better this time
Oh my God Michele! What a mess! Sorry you have to deal with this mostly on your own. Have confidence you’ll take care of it your usual through way. Looking forward to the next installment with more sawmill action. Nice to see the pack is in good hands as always. Take care and stay safe lady!
P.S. Be careful of the post on the car jack. Easy to slip out on accident!
Good video can’t wait for part two. I had to rebuild my deck that lasted 26 years so can’t complain. I used cedar posts and pressure treated lumber and composite deck and a lot of waterproofing tape. Lots of new deck hardware options now. Good luck. Hope your friends had a good party on your deck!😂
Just think though Mich, to a normal person this would have been an expensive disaster. In fact they probably would only have noticed something was up once somebody had got hurt by a collapse. For you, it’s a pain in the ass but you can fix it and fix it better than it was before. You’re an amazing and resourceful woman. Hats off to you. Well done x😊
My sentiments exactly. Sometimes, the universe creates an event that forces us to redirect our attention. It makes us look deeper when and where we are not looking at all. Problems like these are blessings in disguise. 😊
Wow....!! Big project. Actually that fire was a good thing, since it eventually made you aware of the extent of water damage that was being done to the house. Knowing how you give so much though to that I'm sure you will resolve those issues in your normally excellent way. So, you have plenty to keep you unexpectedly busy for most of this summer.
Don't be embarrassed about having a UA-cam channel... you're cataloguing all the repairs/upgrades to your home. ❤❤❤
It's not that she's embarrassed, Michelle doesn't want to brag or discuss this aspect of her life with strangers. Often times doing so nets an unnatural response from folks, potentially eliciting a desire for free marketing, or other such uncomfortable topics of discussion. Pretty sure all she wanted originally was a quick interaction that wasn't associated with the business.
@@kookiedabear Thank you for Mansplaining the situation to me... should I delete my encouraging comment, as it seems to be mis-interpreted by you & may cause others to follow her channel?
That’s kind of correct what he said. Talking about it in it of-itself distracts away from a natural conversation sometimes. I think too because I throw myself into characters and have a more playful side with ‘strangers’ who don’t know the other kinda shy side of me. If that makes sense.
Have been in my home 40 years and over the last 10 things have started showing up periodically that need work. I'm 70 and just last year resealed and painting the outside. Don't know many guys that would not hire a crew an just dive in like your are doing. While your able and have the will power just keep going. You are doing a great job taking care of the dogs and house and home.
That mosquito probably didn't cause that big of a bite because it couldn't get through that muscle😅
What a nightmare, I know exactly what is happening. I just spent a month repairing rot. Not a fun job but nessesary to save what you can .good luck with the repair and be safe.
Michelle, you're bringing back memories of the house I use to have. Would spend my summers working and repairing it. Good luck. Thanks for Sharing!
Holy gun show!!! lol ;p.
Michele you are amazing one tough Lady;be careful !
Thanks for showing the mosquito aftermath 😂
nice to see the dogs! even if some are leaving soon it's nevertheless an adorable sight...
Regarding the deck: now you see why i always tell you to take care of your water management ! nothing more deadly for wood than water !
looking forward to the continuation !
Aw man... I'll just have to stay tuned in to see the rest. What an outro, I love it.
Oh my goodness woman that's a lot of work but at least you will know how it built and you will know that you did it right😂❤ and you will feel safer thank goodness for that little fire😂 thank you for bringing us the video love to see your family and Clyde is such a teddy bear be safe and see you on the next one😂😂🎉😅😮❤
Now this is a really interestingly different video than your normal postings and sort of like a mystery novel as you expose the next event to describe. Looking forward to your creative endeavors.
Love the feeding training.. the wait, and then ok command.. very cool. Love your channel!
Michelle You will now have a deck that will last much longer. Details can really make a huge difference. Waterproofing, tar paper, flashing and whatnot. Stay positive.
Very sorry to see the damage to your deck however, after seeing your guns at the very beginning of this episode it's clear you are the right person for the job! Very impressive lady!
WOW! My 8yr old Nephew said, Michelle has GUNS! LOVE Clyde 🥰🥰🥰 When it comes to Decks, I have done a few, can of worms at times. Use some Thomas Water Sealer or others to protect from wood rot. Your wood deck Michelle, that is bad 😥. Good LUCK, Work Smart & Safe! 🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀
Yikes Michy that deck is a mess .But it shows how much better a builder you are .
And I just come on here to profess my ever-loving adoration of Clyde😂 aka Mudsnack. Cuteness overload 🥰
I know!!!! He’s so freaking adorable!!! He has several mud snacks a day lately! 😂
The projects are never ending & you keep on combating them. One day , you'll fully reap the rewards for all the incredibly hard work. Good Luck 😊
It's all okay in how you handle yourself. WE already know your this wonderful beautiful lady with a very strong and kind heart. The knowledge pours out of you to figure things out. Improvise the moment and your doing all of this very well. I love your strength and strong attitude in you. You are Awesome! I'm grateful you decided to attack this event first of all for the betterment and safety of your home. Working your other cabin projects can be put on hold for awhile. You are doing this the correct way, which is immediately. Having another emergency escape route is also very smart. Build the deck strong and durable. Please stay safe and prayers for your safety. Big Hugs from Santa Barbara. 🤗😘🙏😎💕🍷🌹👏
Wow! It’s amazing that the deck hadn’t collapsed under the last snow fall
Yep it’s shocking!
Wow that is unreal the stuf that can go wrong when your deck isnt put together the proper way and with the proper protection. Steve you better pick the lady a sweet and thoughtful gift 💝🎁🧧❤ .. great work !! Ps nice guns at the start of the vid 🤭
I like the way you roll . I keep my stuff good too .
Hi Michelle, Steve, Pups 🐾🐶 and 🐈⬛too 😊👋🏻 Sorry to hear about the deck my friends, but at least you caught it before anything happened 🙏🏻 Stay safe, take care my friends 🫶🏻 God Bless 🙏🏻 Appreciate you!
The only constant is change, and life is a never ending adventure. Some adventures are good, some, not so much! But you always amaze me with your tenacity and upbeat approach to things. ❤❤
MASSIVE, MASSIVE undertaking and you are the one to literally tackle it!!
A headache and plan interrupting discovery for sure. 😮 Good to get it knocked out correctly. Reminds me of your camper water issue discovery.
I know! Every summer we have some disaster to deal with it seems! 😂
Best of luck to you and Steve with the house/deck water ingress... All the way from Scotland.
Steve is a smart dude. Picked the perfect partner and perfect time to visit Japan!
Look at it this way: you got a whole chapter of material to entertain us on UA-cam! They need a double thumbs up!
Being a mechanic one of the things I hate the most is fixing someone else’s mistakes. Ughhh! Good luck with your deck rebuild and house rescue.
OMG...an unexpected turn of events. Hang in there...always amazed on what you and Steve can do! Love how you give your dogs a wonderful life...
Love the labs,I have had 5 in my lifetime. What a bunch of kids u have!lol So much work to do around the house. Love the music!
Michy, looks like a lot bigger job than expected, complete rebuild of the deck, and framing. Hopefully you'll be able to get the posts you need to complete it.
Good that you caught this early. If the deck had collapsed with a few people (a load) on it, could have been a tragedy. Criminal that the original deck builder did no water entry protection. The house interface area looks fixable though, and you'll be keeping a real close eye on weatherproofing the new construction. Cheers!
Ha. 22 years later isn't really TOO early. But you're right, the whole deck could have collapsed 😮
Perfect project for you Michelle 👌
So sorry for you and Steve Michelle for your deck, another great video though thank you for sharing your daily routines with us. Anyway, have a wonderful day and a beautiful week.
Oh my lord, sorry about the deck. I hope and pray the rest of your week worked out fine.
Always good content 👌 thanks for sharing can't wait for the next one!!
Got my coffee.👍🏝️
Welcome to the world of a remodeling or handyman contractor. Im a licensed remodeling contractor in Northern AZ, and I run into this stuff on a daily basis. And we have a much dryer climate per se than you do. Most of our moisture occurs in the winter months in the form of snow. But it never ceases to amaze me, how often I run into a scenario like yours. I feel for you guys, I really do. Its so heart breaking (and bank breaking) for a homeowner, when they see this unexpected damage. Especially to log and timber type homes. We see these huge pieces of wood on our homes, and assume they are doing just fine. Until you start a project like this. Well, Michelle and Steve, I sincerely hope this scenario doesnt hit you too hard. The sad fact is, that it is what it is, and it has to be dealt with. Make sure the repairs are being done correctly and properly, and soon you will be able to go on with your adventurous lives, and put this behind you!
All I can say is “ Ohh Wow” !🥺
Hey sweet lady, looks like you’re feeding an army of puppies ❤ love it 👍🏼🥂🇺🇸🇨🇦❤️
Holy smokes! It’s a good thing you caught that rot before there was a catastrophic collapse
Wow … you be putting in some serious work.
Clyde 😂😂😂 "come on mom, gimme the food"
The wolf pack is strong in your household!!
Zerk fix... penetrating oil and air chuck.
Wow, what a mess, one more winter and that deck would have been on the ground. Good thing you caught this mess before someone got killed
Oh damn! So sorry to see your deck and house rotten Michy. Hopefully don't have to rip the whole house down. Good luck and stay safe!
Hello Michèle, this is quite a daring project. Good luck Michèle 💪❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💋
Would have never known if there wasn't a fire, until it collapsed., maybe at the worst possible time. 🔥✨💜🙏🏻
What is there to say...... your an inspiration! You work so hard Michelle.
You'll have plenty of content for the next month. Perhaps we'll see a lot more of Steve in the deck rebuild.
Regarding a possible future railing for the cabin on the cliff. What about installing something with a nautical theme. Perhaps a rope or cable safety railing system.
Thank you for all that you do Michelle.

p.s. I missed your little ❤️/Michelle emoji in the comments of your last video 😥.
It's all good. I guess I'll live...😉
It’s hard to see every comment! Haha

That’s crazy the water damage, wow:(
Ah, the joys of home ownership! I had a little drip in the basement from what appeared to be the joint of a pipe to the bathtub, like a drop or two a day, so put off re-sweating the pipes for years. When I finally decided to tackle that issue and started pulling the insulation down from the ceiling I discovered there was nothing wrong with the pipe at all, instead the grout of the bathroom tile had gone bad and for all those years (and, no doubt, many before I bought the house) water had been leaking into the walls and soaking into the insulation. Man, what a mess! And the only bathroom in the house out of commission for a week.
Thank You for the Gun show.
That's not a walk, that's army manoeuvres 😊❤
We all know how projects can turn into major ones when things weren't done correctly the first time 😮 Thank you for sharing another awesome with your project 😊 You have quite the crew of dogs there L o l
What a freaking nightmare , holy shite .
I know 😢
Wow… serious bummer. Being a welder fabricator for 40 years, wood scares me😂.
Also need to mention, that was my robot mosquito I used to get a blood sample for your DNA so I can clone you and have my very own Michy in Arizona 😂😂😂
Good luck with the rebuild!
Great comment, I would like to buy some of that DNA, LOL. Salute from a Fellow Welder Fabricator. Took My Wife up to the top floor of the John Hancock building in Chicago and ask Her to show Me some Wood. She coldn't find any. Then I showed Her Monster I-beams. Steel rules. 😃
Yep, I'll also like to place an order for some of the DNA 😎😎
There is a tool available to clean out or to un stick the zerk fittings also brake cleaner helps to clean out a clogged endalong with a pic tool … also there are ASE and METRIC threaded zerks … I hope this helps a little …. Stay Safe 🙋🏼♂️🇺🇸👊🏼👊🏼🔨🪚
Also heat via propane torch. This is what I see used on car brakes, etc.
If you are talking about the tools that you fill with grease , put on the zerk and hammer , yes they work most of the time . And I have seen it put enough hydraulic pressure to blow the fitting right out. I've quit using them
As far as using a propane torch, with caution it may do the trick . But there is a reason that it's against the law to use one on any brake parts, and can get you sued for everything you will ever have
I usually just pull the zerk and clean it . Replace if cannot get freed up
@@outinthesticks1035
That is not the tool I’m talking about
Steve is the star of this show. Keep up the great work. On to glory Steve! 💫
Michy🖤💙Black or Blue I hate Mosquitoes too! I like what your wearing to black and blue my colours to! Dean( Soul)
... OMG ... That meal time was amazing ,, the dogs were so in tune with your direction .. made me get the " feels' for your care and love for your dogs , and their buddies ... Michy , You are the best ....
My heart breaks for yous Michelle ied gladly give anything to be your neighbour so I could help out and just be around you 🥰
We used to boil the blocked grease nipples, as they are called in the UK. In a tin can. Just test them before refitting. Great vids Michy. Sometimes you can use one nipple to grease them all then put the old ones back until you get some replacements.
I thought about that too!
The joy of home ownership. Stay strong and open the wine.
You never stop amazing me! Always the best part of sundays. You bring joy to my days.
Nice Michelle, it reminds me of the old saying: The Journey of a thousand miles begins with the first STEP! Looking good and your doing great, and it is all going to come together and work out fine: I know a little more money than expected, but after what i saw you guys are blessed it didd not fall in on ya'll. :) Your amazing Michelle, your hard work, your planning and a tenacity if something doesn't work you keep trying. Tell Steve hey for us from SE Texas Bear Love and Prayers ❤💯🙏 Fur babies looked good :)
Eat your heart out, Hulk Hogan
EXCELLENT fun and fancy FREE shorts at the 18 Min mark❤❤
Growing up in Canada I never heard of a grease fitting called anything but a nipple, here in the states they thought that was hilarious, everyone here calls them zerk fittings.
Haha. Same here I guess! Only heard of them as being called nipples! 😂
Change out the nipple on the fitting you were trying to clean on camera. It unscrews for replacement!
What a Nightmare . I don't think there is ever a simple job , or something you think will only take a few days .
This is the first time I have seen you home ( outside ) and it's a Beautiful home and has great views .
Steve is one lucky dude , he has a live in welder , carpenter , concreter , lumber jack , saw miller , Vet , Doctor , and the list goes on . Michelle , you are one incredible Lady .
I do look forward to watching the DECK build over the next month r so . cheers from Australia ..
It’s amazing to see so many beautiful dogs being cared for with so much attention to each one. I just love you for that.
I’m sorry you had a fire on your deck. I love everything you do especially the dogs! Love you mean it! ❤🌹
You are one in a million. A woman in my taste 🥰 Thanks for you videos.
Always fun to see the dogs in the videos. Why does Clyde have such a different dog dish? Never seen one like that before. And the discovery of the condition of your deck. What a nightmare that had to be. That goofy off-key music you were playing while Steve was working on setting that deck post cracked me up. 😅 Looking forward to next week's video.
I believe that dish makes meet slower cuz he has to work harder for his food
Not to criticize, but when greasing an excavator, you should place the excavator in transport position, curl the bucket all the way in, and fold the stick under towards the boom as far as it can go then lower to the ground, this will allow easy access to the upper grease nipples without using a ladder, once done place boom and stick at 90 degrees with bucket open and flat on the ground (so the back side of the bucket is on the ground and from seated position you are looking into the bucket), this will allow easy access to remaining nipples, a good tip to remember is in all greasing positions avoid putting pressure on the implements as will cause pins to push against the inner bosses making it much harder to accept grease. Rule of thumb is, if machine is working, grease every 8 hours or daily, I always made a habit of greasing every morning while machine warmed up. I was an operator since 1973, just some helpful advice, really enjoy your videos, thanks for sharing!
Poor Michy. It seems like the worst stuff happens while Steve is far away. Hang in there, darlin. This too shall pass. Stay safe.
Your work ethic and tenacity are admirable Mich, thanks again for a great share and touch of your reality x
Your awesome crazy woman, love the videos. ❤
I have been able to successfully clean out clogged Grease fittings with a propane Torch. Warm it up and you gotta be careful Handling it. Use leather gloves and then hook up your grease gun and put some pressure on it and normally it'll push the hard chunk right out.
A cliffhanger ending. You bum! Are we going to see a new utility shed build next?? Whoever got that trailer tucked in there deserves a medal!
excellent video!!!! keep working hard this series is going to look good.
