Black History Month; Destroying the myths. No. 5 Marcus Garvey, saviour or swindler?

- Black History Month in Britain was launched in 1987, to mark the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Marcus Garvey, a Jamaican activist. Some people to this day see Garvey as something of a messiah, the man who wished to lead the black diaspora back to Africa. To others, he was a racist and conman.
Sounds like a real hero along the lines of Saint Floyd.
Tbf, if Garvey had his way then none of us would be here moaning about this current situation because it wouldn't exist. Beyond his grifting, it seems the contention with Garvey is that he didn't believe in the multiracial utopia but neither do most of us here... So, what exactly is the problem?

Off topic, but interesting how the BBC has steadfastly ignored Sturgeon's humiliating defeat yesterday in the Supreme Court over overstepping her powers. Is it true that when African Americans settled in Liberia, they ended up enslaving their new neighbours?
Yes.
Well it’s true that they didn’t get on with the people that were already there.
The vast majority of blk and femyle invention achievements are works of fiction created out of false associations, misinterpretations, and political correctness.
There has been civil war in Liberia for going on 120 years now, it's basically warlord competition
As they had little in common with the indigenous people there was an issue with integration. The governing bodies were formed from the ex slaves who went on to organise a government from those people. A hierarchy was formed from a group of people who saw themselves as elite and superior. The original inhabitants still to this day are ruled by the decedents from those people.
I am attempting at not having my comment removed here.
Its funny that he had barely anything to do with Britain, yet there are statues of and places named after him throughout the country.
Any statues of him in Africa 🤔🤫

Except living here for about 7 years and dying here.
'' Garvey lined his pockets ... '' perchance that's where BLM got the idea.
The emigration of African Americans both free and recently emancipated was funded and organized by the American Colonization Society (ACS). The mortality rate of these settlers was the highest in accurately-recorded human history. Of the 4,571 emigrants who arrived in Liberia between 1820 and 1843, only 1,819 survived.
These figures are similar to The Black Death.

Am trying to find a multicultural society in history that hasn’t ended in disaster. It usually goes/ they lived happily together side by side for years until (disaster)
Switzerland is often cited as an example for a successful multi-cultural state. However, the Swiss model is based on geographical separation.
Most example of multicultural society in history happen in major trade center. As such, they are usually not freely mixed but rather separated into different district for each race/ethnic. This is because such district serve to acclimatize new immigrants from their homeland to the new country and help in maintaining ties with their old network of families and friends.
One of the side effect of this is, due to the small size of the community and the practice of marrying each other, is that they most of the time began to disproportionately of certain specific profession due to the practice of inheriting the elders job and shops. That is why in South East Asia at least in the 19th century to early 20th century, Indian are mostly spice and cloth merchants, Armenian are mostly jewelers and goldsmiths, and Chinese are mostly general trade and sundry shopkeepers.
The exception to this are those who migrate to become common labourers. Most of the time, this are the group that eventually cause trouble as they are basically an outcast in a foreign country, being look down upon by their wealthier compatriot. Among this are the Chinese miners and port labourer, indian haulers and plantation workers.
Many people of different cultures through the ages have lived together peacefully, not considering it wrong, until a religious or political organisation has pointed it out to them.

It is a facinating debate as to who a Hero is. It is as close as we get to discussing publically who our females should choose as a mate, and who our males should emulate to be a good mate.
How do we want our males to be in response to injust violence?
How do we want our males to be in terms of breaking rules and social norms?
How do we want our males to be in terms of their public personas?
How do we want our males to be in the face of faith?

I actually think that a lot of things feed into a debate about heros, and a lot of it is about how we conduct ourselves in that debate that is part of the game ...
In my country we are busy gearing up for elections, and one of the political parties has put up posters lauding the people that organised community groups to protect property during the recent looting as heros, and another that calls them racist, because some of them targeted black people, stopped them and assulted them.
What I found so facinating in discussing it with my daughter is that she did not find them heros, pricipally because they broke the law. She would prefer a hero that finds a way to protect property that is within the law ... so the people who built human chains around the shopping centres ...
It was explained to me by some old people that Garvey was seen as a very early 'leader' in the black community. That's why he's famous, not for his views. He gave black people some direction/leadership.
