Black History Month; Destroying the myths. No. 5 Marcus Garvey, saviour or swindler?

  • Black History Month in Britain was launched in 1987, to mark the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Marcus Garvey, a Jamaican activist. Some people to this day see Garvey as something of a messiah, the man who wished to lead the black diaspora back to Africa. To others, he was a racist and conman.

      Tbf, if Garvey had his way then none of us would be here moaning about this current situation because it wouldn't exist. Beyond his grifting, it seems the contention with Garvey is that he didn't believe in the multiracial utopia but neither do most of us here... So, what exactly is the problem?

      As they had little in common with the indigenous people there was an issue with integration. The governing bodies were formed from the ex slaves who went on to organise a government from those people. A hierarchy was formed from a group of people who saw themselves as elite and superior. The original inhabitants still to this day are ruled by the decedents from those people.

    The emigration of African Americans both free and recently emancipated was funded and organized by the American Colonization Society (ACS). The mortality rate of these settlers was the highest in accurately-recorded human history. Of the 4,571 emigrants who arrived in Liberia between 1820 and 1843, only 1,819 survived.

      Switzerland is often cited as an example for a successful multi-cultural state. However, the Swiss model is based on geographical separation.

    • @13gan
      @13gan 2 роки тому +3

      Most example of multicultural society in history happen in major trade center. As such, they are usually not freely mixed but rather separated into different district for each race/ethnic. This is because such district serve to acclimatize new immigrants from their homeland to the new country and help in maintaining ties with their old network of families and friends.
      One of the side effect of this is, due to the small size of the community and the practice of marrying each other, is that they most of the time began to disproportionately of certain specific profession due to the practice of inheriting the elders job and shops. That is why in South East Asia at least in the 19th century to early 20th century, Indian are mostly spice and cloth merchants, Armenian are mostly jewelers and goldsmiths, and Chinese are mostly general trade and sundry shopkeepers.
      The exception to this are those who migrate to become common labourers. Most of the time, this are the group that eventually cause trouble as they are basically an outcast in a foreign country, being look down upon by their wealthier compatriot. Among this are the Chinese miners and port labourer, indian haulers and plantation workers.
