Ya know, visiting rural Mississippi, I realize that Dollar General is a lifeline to people who would have to drive30 or 40 miles one way to Walmart.
It's the rural South's version of an inner city "food desert". Except that you will never find a true Southern home that doesn't have at least one more can of Clover Valley pork and beans somewhere in the corner of their pantry.

Tbh, DG has been very helpful to me. I have three cats but I can no longer carry a huge bag of cat food. They have the smaller bags at a reasonable price and the store is small enough that I'm not worn out just walking to get what I need.
I no longer eat much, so I also buy some snacks for myself so I have something quick if my BG drops and I get shaky weak. I know the Clover Valley woven wheats (Trisket) are good but how they messed up saltines is baffling.
I guess I'll pay the extra for snacks that taste good 😢

I can’t say for every food product but at the Mayfield Milk we filled orders for GV, Dollar General, Trader Joe’s, etc exact same product.
Yep. The difference in cost was due to name brand recognition and marketing costs. I used to do a similar blind taste test with my economics class so that they could understand how those two things are included in the Product cost when it gets to market.
Man, when COVID hit, I started going to DG to avoid the crowds at the grocery store, and when I hit all the Clover Valley stuff, I was amazed with how good most of it is!

As someone who has been in the bakery nabisco uses to bake cookies, I can tell you that oreo, chip ahoy, publix, anx clover valley all run next to one another.
True but my ex worked briefly in a bacon packing plant and yes all the brands ran on the line but the house brands had the rejects from the name brands.
@@stormythelowcountrykitty7147 Maybe for meat, but nobody but the thrift store or the livestock feed companies get the less-than perfect product from a bakery. Sara Lee bakery veteran with 13+ years here. Some brands had different formulas, some just got repackaged, but it wasn’t always different.
@@stormythelowcountrykitty7147Feel like that's the key in a lot of these. Yeah, it's all made in the same building, but the building blocks/ratios/QC can be different. Smithfield might reject bacon that Kroger would accept. Oreo might use a better cocoa than Clover Valley.
I imagine they could be rejected for something as silly as weight of the cookie or the chip in the case of chocolates. But I do understand many places do have professional tasters (I dated one once) who can determine if one is different than the rest.
They aren't the same though. You can tell the less quality just by taste.
The off brand stuff has been getting better and better the last decade, and this is proof

No, the main brand is getting cheaper and cutting corners and quality, and that's what closing the gap more
Name brand's have been cutting back on just about everything because that's the only for them to keep growing their profits every year. Most store brand stuff are made by white label companies and they grow their profits by making comparable product with lower profit margins so the retailers can make better profit even at a lower price than name brand.
A lot of these foods are made in the same factory. The early 90s in my Home Ec class, we did a taste test between store brand and name brand foods(ice cream, bread, potato chips, etc). The store brand won 1/2 of the time.
My roommate was allergic to tree nuts (but not peanuts) and she could eat the MOM (malt-o-meal) cereals, but not honey nut cheerios because they used almonds. Sometimes "cheaper" is better.

Matt is a good country boy. I trust him wholeheartedly. Also, I've been sleeping on Clover Valley, and I think I may need to check them out more. I'd drive down the road to DG right now, but I'm pretty sure there will be one across the street from me by tomorrow.

Dollar General prices their items cheaper, but you have to watch what they ring up for because they frequently ring up higher than what they were marked at.
And check the package sizes too. Always do the math, divide the price by the weight so you're getting an ounce to ounce comparison. For example, for the beef jerky it sounds like the clover valley is cheaper per ounce than the Jack Links in the small package, but if you get the family size package of Jack Link at another store that ends up being cheaper per ounce.
Be careful shopping at Korger too. Every time in the past year , when I have bought meats there that were on special or sale, the price rang up was NOT the sale price.
In my case the difference was 2-3 dollars . So double check you recipt.

The kool-aid, if it was orange, got donated from McDonald's and it is their HiC concentrate. The recommended amount of water makes it taste weak

CV is the same company that supplies the Girl Scouts with their cookies. Also I’ve noticed that CV’s knockoffs were established before the big brands started changing recipes. The CV canned cream soups are the same recipe as the old Campbells soups. Ppl swear Campbells hasn’t changed but they have. You can tell by this alone.

Canned milk and sweetened condensed milk, Clover Valley and Milnot//Eagle Brand is made with the exact same recipe only the label is changed. My hubby used to work in the lab at Milnot before they closed the plant

Clover Valley’s Corn Flakes cereal is better than brand name. If DG didn’t get nothing else right, they knocked it out the park with their corn flakes!

They just opened the second experimental Dollar General Marketplace right near us. It's actually quite nice... for now. They've added fresh foods, produce section and enlarged the frozen and cold foods. The prices are actually competitive . Better than any "convenience" store but not quite Aldi. We like it a lot.
There is a DG Market near me in central MO. I’ve never been to it though.

I much prefer DG beef jerky over almost any other brand. The pieces tend to be smaller but thicker and less stringy.

What I remember about VBS snacks (I'm 54) were those little cookies that look like daisies with the hole in the middle, knockoff Oreos that were called Hydrox, and grape Koolaid that was undersweetened.
Hydrox was the original, believe it or not.

Is there any store brand pop tarts that taste good ? Even the pop tart brand itself has suffered a drop in quality recently. When I was a kid the store brand version was absolutely horrible, seems to have not changed much
@@davyboy9397 The DG ones are the only ones that I've tried. That only because they were out of real Pop Tarts and I needed a chocolate fix. I rarely get them anymore because the boxes have become so big and I just don't need a box of 150 Pop Tarts.
Full priced pop tarts also taste like despair.

Actually, I think perfect would be a box of regular mixed with a box of all burnt! (Except then I'd probably still have them all eaten within 24 hours, and it'd be twice as big a binge...)

I know this is about DG, but my eyes were opened to Great Value this past month after I bought some Keebler cookies. I had not had any Keebler cookies in several years, but they were not good. Just curious how those not-so-good Keebler cookies compared, I bought some Great Value equivalents. Wow. Now those were like what I remembered. I also bought some Great Value cookies that looked like the Girl Scout Somoas. I could not tell the difference! The brand name companies need to step it up a bit. I cannot speak for other brands, but Keebler seems to have crumbled.
True! I bought some Keebler cheeze crackers and they were awful compared to the Lance brand one.
I'm of the mind that if you see someone stealing food (especially at DG), no you didn't. You didn't see anything. Only exception to this is the office fridge; you don't take someone else's meal.

Need to do Clover Valley vs Girl Scouts. Their version of Thin Mints rock, and my wife likes the peanut butter chocolate cookies. And you can get them year round.

For every 1 you get wrong, they open another store....on your street.
the boxes cause a tripping hazard for when you get the itch to run. It gives the cashier enough time to get back to the register, if they are even in the store.
I don’t want to squeeze that dog toy they leave up at the register. Just hire two people per shift, DG!

Been needing a food series for a long minute!
I pulled off hwy 55 in southern MO for a sleep break and right in the middle of soybean fields was one lone Dollar General. I took a short nap and went inside. It felt like the Twilight Zone - clean, well organized, all new fixtures and a lovely, well dressed clerk with make up.
I think maybe angels were involved. 😮
I discovered that Dollar General and Family Dollar both carry the "Clover Valley" brand...but the catch is they sell their better quality stuff at Dollar General. Two off the top of my head are bottled lemon juice, and Parmesan Cheese.
Holy cow..... Clover Valley has really been stepping up their game.
Clover Valley makes our favorite version of cottage cheese out there. Haven't tried most of their other snack foods, but now we might need to.

I don't have a lot of experience with Dollar General, but I can say that Dollar Tree sells a number of knockoffs of snack foods that make MREs look mighty tasty.
They sell things that look really delicious until you get it in your mouth---then it's all mmmmm, I wish I had some crunchy dehydrated fruit cocktail right now!!!

i found some GREAT brands out there and they NEVER last. they ALWAYS change the way they make it after they get ppl buying it.
That's how I feel when I go to Sam's Club. They had some pre-cooked chicken tenders that were the best ones I ever had outside of Dairy Queen. Then, they disappeared from the shelves and were replaced with the uncooked ones and the texture is different and not nearly as good.
Nature does, in fact, "love to throw boxes everywhere."
I have a suggestion for these going forward.
Get a lazy Susan and see both snacks in it and spin it every round.
That way you can’t subconsciously hunt for a pattern that may help you
I don't know about DG, But I drove a truck for WM for 20 years and you would be surprised how many products are picked up at the same place with different names. Another fun fact, I drove for Little Debbie for 10 years and we used to pick up honey buns from Flowers bakery, Pecan cups from some small bakery in Atl and various others from different places. LD made Nutty Bars for Frito Lay. Basically anything containing yeast wasn't made by Little Debbie. That was in the 90's, things have changed.
