Why don’t you come clean and admit that you are from Northern Maine? It’s way too obvious that you aren’t from the south. Southerners love sourdough bread and would pick it over every other sandwich on the table. It’s a southern thing, so that tells us that you aren’t southern.

@@joshuajacques9569 I asked him. He's the guy in the bottom right and apparently he just does the painting (or he did, no longer works for them). The guy pictured above him , Joe Puskas, actually comes up with the designs.
@@joshuajacques9569 its based off local landmarks and other things. Each one is tuned to it's location, even different ones in different parts of town. My local Firehouses know me too well.

If the person making the sandwich at Jersey Mike's asked if you wanted it Mike's Way and you said yes, then that is why you got onions on your sandwich. Mike's Way is tomatoes, onions, their spices, oil, & vinegar on top of whatever sandwich base you ordered.
And Mike's Way is the way to go on their club sandwiches. Add some spicy mustard

Jersey Mikes is just a solid sandwich every time. Firehouse is pretty good for "extra" sandwiches, but for deli meat sandwiches Jersey Mikes has got to be the winner, and this is no surprise.
I know subway "isn't good", but have you had the supreme meats from there? I really like it. And for sure Firehouse is at their best with the elaborate stuff!

For only $20 for a decent size sub, a former friend was in jail for DUi, they served Jersey Mike's in jail

Subway, Herbert & Gerberts, Jersey Mike's, Potbelly, and Jimmy Johns.
Of those 5 places Subway gives you the most food for the best price and is good quality. My favorite thing to get is a Footllng "The Beast" on Honey-Oat Bread with Pepperjack Cheese and all the veggies except Banana Peppers. I can get that and a Large Drink for less then $20.
Jersey Mike's is trash. Their bread is horrendously bad. Maybe because I also live where "Mike" lives and I can get a real sub elsewhere.

Correct. Pickling vegetables, not just cucumbers, was for preservation. There is only so many times you can eat carrots during the winter.

I worked there for 1.5 years. It was good. But people thought we were like Subway and kept calling to us what they wanted on their sandwhich after they ordered it. The plastic divider did NOT have rhat purpose-it was behind the chip shelves.

Biggest problem with Panera is that a half a sandwich, a mushy apple and an undersized bag of chips is roughly the same price as a stealth jet fighter.
I really want to like their sandwiches, they just don't put any damned meat on them! It's like one slice of meat, folded in half, between 10x that much bread. They look great on paper though.

Blimpee's was very good! I was late to the party. About the time I discovered them they closed in my area.
We had Blimpie in my high school and now I think it’s only at the airport.
There’s one the next town over from mine I don’t go very much. It’s in a gas station.
There's still a few in my area but they're all inside of gas stations, mostly Circle K's.
Jersey Mike’s donated sandwiches to Nurses during the pandemic. Tons of them. Since no one else was there - admins, cafeteria workers, sometimes no cleaners. We needed the nice gesture.
Damn good sandwiches too! My ex-gf was a nurse and she fell in love with Jersey Mike's because of that initiative. And she's a little ass Filipina haha
So true at my ortho office we get free things from Jersey’s, and Chik fila too. Those two places love their healthcare providers and we love them
Schlotzsky's is NOT a sub shop. Their sandwiches (on sourdough, that's why it's spongy) are amazing when eaten fresh and hot.

Schlotzsky’s is a Texas institution. Their bread predates the foodie movements. It’s based on the muffuletta sandwich out of New Orleans which uses Muffuletta bread, which comes out of Sicily.
And it is infinitely better when eaten fresh out of the oven. I can completely relate to Matt’s reaction to the bread if it had been sitting for more than about 15 minutes. Take-out from Schlotzsky’s is a horrible experience in comparison to the in-store product. The bread is rubbery.

Their muffuletta was my all time favorite sandwich! I don't know if all of them got rid of it, but the last Schlotzsky's I was in didn't have them 😢
It's actually a sourdough bread. Muffuletta Bread is an Italian loaf. They're different.
You thinking Schlotzsky’s bread is a current trend rather than something that’s been a staple in the restaurant for 40 to 50 years is weird.
Subway is what to buy when you're on a road trip and starving but there are no other restaurants at the exit and even the gas station is out of those pre-made fridge sandwiches. But somehow there's always that one sad Subway.

Once on a road trip I stopped at a Subway, figuring it was the only halfway healthy option at that highway exit. I got a pleasant surprise when there was a shawarma place next door, so I ate there instead. Sadly, it's not still around anymore, so when I pass by that area, I go a little further off the highway to a family dining restaurant.
From what I've read, Subway is one of the cheapest startup-cost franchises you can do. AND they have no rules about how close you are to another one.

@@williamhoover2927 Yep, you can always rely on finding a Subway just about anywhere while on the road, some I'm convinced haven't had a new shipment of vegetables in months. Personally though, I try to stop at the Love's locations with an Arby's for my fast food sandwich cravings.

If you ever ate a sub from an Italian deli in a northeast city, where the bread is bought daily from a bakery on the same street, and the meats and cheeses are from freshly sliced Boar's Head products, you'd never eat a chain shop sub again.
As a Connecticut resident I can vouch for this comment.
Publix uses Boar's Head. It's good, but they're still cold cuts.
I'm not sure about this logic. I don't think a sandwich can be so good, that for the rest of my life I never eat another sandwich, because I don't live where the good sandwiches are. Also, they sell Boar's Head at the grocery store, so whatever. It's nothing special.

I have a Jersey Mike's, Firehouse, and Schlotzsky's all within 5 min of my apartment so I haven't been to Subway in a long time. I only get the meatball sub from there if I'm traveling and have to stop in one of those gas station subways.

Okay, Matt.. I live in Tennessee and my last name is South. So, I feel that I am a decent southerner. I love you to pieces, but in my opinion, Schlotzsky’s, and the exact sandwich you tried, is the one I would always get when I went there, and is the best fast food sandwich out there..
That being said, I do still love you, and I hope you still, at least, will allow me to continue to watch 🙃

Fyi, Jimmy John's regular sandwich is an 8" sub. when you get thier 16" sub they cut in half. I'm particularly fond of their Billy Club.

Publix is truly delicious with fresh bread. But, unless you order an eternity ahead of time, the lines are crazy! Pack your patience.
I lived near THREE Publix(es?) and could only get fresh bread if I went at 9 am.. not sure what all the whoop is about pubsubs.
Ordering ahead in the publix app is the way to go.
Publix has some of the best around here and lower price than Jersey Mike's. But you're right, they are slow as molasses.
Order ahead in the app for 30-60 minutes before you can actually be there.

I've gotten firehouse a bunch in my life. Each time I've said no pickle, they have always put in the pickle.
Ask for it in a container on the side and they usually do that but might give a lot thinking you love pickles lol. I ask on side for my kid that does love them but they never forget and put on side and on the sandwich too
At work we used to order them for lunch and it was like a pickle lover's Christmas! (about half the guys didn't like pickles)

I pretty much make a scene when I order with loud explanations of how even the scent ruins the sandwich and then infuses my garbage so that if they DO put a pickle in my order I will throw it in their trash before I leave the store! 😂 Usually that ends up being effective. 👍🏻😉

We had a McAllister's open where I live. First time there, ordered a Reuben. Got a corned beef sandwich with Thousand Island dressing. No kraut. Went five more times. Every order, they forgot one main ingredient. Last straw, I got their big loaded sandwich. I forget what it was called, but I got home and only had roast beef and bread for $15.00. That five minute drive, I built up a good head of steam and when the cashier told me, "That's how it comes." I was nuclear-powered Karen. Haven't been there in 20 years.
I used to go to the original one in Oxford, MS, 25 years ago. It was fabulous and funky. The current chain is like a completely different restaurant serving the same menu. The food doesn't taste the same. Even the Oxford one isn't even the same - it's on the other side of town.
I've only ever ordered baked potatoes from McAllister's. Those are pretty good at least.

Schlotsky's has been around since the 70's in Austin and isn't a sub. Not really sure what category it belongs in, but the bread is the best! Like the old commercial says "No substitutzskys".
They left Chicagoland as Quiznos came in and dominated them. I used to love their dark pumpernickel bread it was the best. Potbelly and Jimmy Johns both started in Illinois and both are meh.

You're correct Pub sub would have won. But 1/4 the cost, what are you talking about? most subs are around $10 each, especially with bacon.
My sister has surgery once, and ate at the Panera bread inside the hospital. I wish I'd have just gone to the cafeteria instead, would have been cheaper and better.

I love Schlotzsky's bread, when it comes out fresh, it's really crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The one he had was probably a bit soggy from sitting in the wrapper for a while.

Schlotzsky's is also not a sub sandwich but more of a muffuletta and uses a sourdough bun for its sammys. It's also a Texas chain, so yeah...I'm calling you out Matt on your anti-Texas campaign.

You did a southern subs rankings and did not include Lenny's the deep south's only home grown shrub shop. Should have included Lenny's. Lenny's is through out the south and the only sandwich shop I go to.

I was a kid when Subway came to my little rural town. My Dad always made us all get cold cut combos (the cheapest sandwich) with everything (leaving off free toppings was wasting money. I can't even start to count how many of those I ate after little league games, or at family "picnics" (is it really a "picnic" if you just take a sack of luke warm Subway to the park?).
To this day, I'll buy one Subway cold cut combo (with only toppings I actually want) every summer. It tastes like childhood. And Mayo.
What did we learn Matt? Always go to Firehouse cause they are amazing. No one can beat the Hook and Ladder! Jersey Mike has tough bread. And Firehouse supports firefighters around the country. No one appreciates fire fighters until they rescue you or keep your house from burning to the ground. Just saying…
I ordered a BLT with onions, banana peppers and black olives from subway for lunch one day. Another coworker went to pick up everyone's order. I got a sub with bacon, onions, banana peppers and black olives. I called Subway and was told, and I quote, "you didn't ask for lettuce and tomato.". 😳
I responded, "I didn't ask for bacon either, but you put that on. Besides, what do you think the "L" and "T" stand for?!?"
That was my last time ordering from Subway and it's been YEARS....
Back in the day when McDonald's happy meals were only a burger, small drink and fries. I ordered one for my son with "just ketchup" meaning no pickle or mustard. I literally got a bun with just ketchup. He got a ketchup sandwich!

This was a hilarious Ranking video. I agree with your placement of Jersey Mikes. I come from the northeast where most mom and pop sub shops outrank every chain sub shop 99% of the time, except for Jersey Mikes. Jersey Mikes is at least a tie with a lot of the corner sub shops up in the north east. I live in east TN now, and when I want a good sub that reminds me of the northeast US, Jersey Mikes is what I get.
I'm from the northeast and tried Jersey Mike's when I was in Tennessee. It was awful. Jimmy Johns there was so much better. They need to work on consistency

Specifically New Orleans.
Baldwin County, Alabama has had a large Italian community for at least 150 years, and there were Italians in shipbuilding in Mobile during the War. I'm willing to bet South Alabama has had subs on the menu for a fair while. Plus you've got the whole poboy thing in Louisiana.
The Boston term "Spuckie" comes from _Spuccadella_ which is the name of the roll it's made in. Elsewhere in New England it's called a "sub," a "grinder," or in Maine, an "Italian." These names all come from the shipyards up and down the New England coast where subs were made during the War, and where Italians with stonecutting and grinding experience from the nearby rock quarries were often hired to do the work of grinding and finishing hulls smooth for painting. As Italians built ships in Mobile, too, they probably brought submarine sandwiches to work like their Northern counterparts.

You were on point until JJs. Come on now, late night after way too many beers a JJs sandwich is better than nearly everything in the list but at min it beats out the schlotz, panera and subway. Top 2 are a lock though Jersey Mike's Philly is a national treasure of delicacies. So good, firehouse Hook and ladder is top tier BUT if you don't eat firehouse sub fresh it loses 80% of its deliciousness and gets soggy. Great video though!! Keep it up RTR

I evaluate sub shops by their meatball subs. If the bread can't stand up to the moisture, it's a loser.

Where's Goodcents? I like their bread. I hate pickles too. Wasn't impressed with Jersey Mike's. I like Jimmy Johns. Its fast good and the closest to my house. Yellow Sub is good but they are a local company.
... at least two of those sandwiches aren't subs... and schlotzsky's sourdough (when done right) is absolutely amazing.
Dang you let me down big time Matt. Schlotzky's bread is the best! It's also a Texas thing so you being from where you are and all I understand your lack of respect for Schotzky's. Depending on my mood it's a tough call on whether Firehouse or Schlotzky's would get my first place vote.

My biggest take-away here is how many places screwed up a very simple order. Also, I haven't had Schlotzsky's in years, but I still remember how weird their bread is.

How can you not like pickles? Someone took one of the most worthless things in the world, a cucumber, and found a way to not only make it edible but make it one of the best things in this world, a pickle.
Best is a very generous word to use for a pickle, but it is an improvement on the cucumber, I'll give you that.

I actually like other pickled vegetables better than pickled cucumbers. Something about dill pickles in particular is ABSOLUTELY VILE to me. Pickled carrots? Not bad. Pickled okra? Surprisingly decent. Pickled watermelon rinds? Great! Kimchi? Umeboshi? Good! Dill pickles? Absolute trash, not allowed in my kitchen, not allowed to contaminate a sammich.
The taste/smell/texture of cucumber makes me gag. Turn it into a big ol' crunchy dill pickle and yuuuuummy!

That's not a sub/hero/hoagie/grinder that's a boring sandwich on long bread. No wonder they were all disappointing.
i don't care what anybody says,schlotzsky's sandwiches are delish. that pumpernickel rye mmmm. as far as subs go i want everything they got put on mine,the crap that nobody wants, floor sweepins and other lefttovers, throw it on mine. dont care where it comes from either! publix makes a pretty dang good sammich too

I'm with ya'. It's NOT a sub, though. Why Matt included it here is beyond me. Fun fact: It is a Muffaletta Sandwich, originally invented in New Orleans(though Shlotzsky's is from Austin TX).
As far as chains go, no one can compete with Jersey Mike's. They're slicing meat fresh, and you can get it Mike's Way.

As far as national chains go, I agree. But there are local/regional chains out there that are better: Moe's (the sub shop, not the burrito place), D'Angelo, Primanti Brothers.

Jimmy John's is fantastic. But after watching this, I don't think they screwed up. Matt said enough stuff in this video I disagree with that I think he just has bad taste in sandwiches. Talking about bread being nothing more than a tray to get the contents to your mouth... such bread disrespect! Give me some good fancy flavored breads any day!

@@DanielChannel89 Nah, Jimmy John's sucks. He's right about that. Everything I've ever had from them tastes stale or old, and I've had it from several different locations because people like you keep telling me I'm wrong about it. There are much better places to get a sub sandwich.
Jimmy John’s is boring. Bland and flavorless, slapped together by staff that doesn’t care. I’m on the east coast and have local sub shops to choose from.
Stale bread and too much of it compared to ingredients... It's terrible. They tout being fast... Perhaps they should focus on being good first...
I will admit that their bread is the worst thing about them. Contrary to the point I made overall about good bread being an important part of the sandwich, Jimmy John's has a relatively weak bread game. But the contents of the sandwich are soo good it makes up for it, to me. Imagine how good they'd be if they gave two craps about bread.
Places like Panera, Schlotsky's, and Subway benefit to different degrees from actually having good breads. McAllister's does too, though perhaps not as consistently. Panera has fantastic bread.
I love Schlotzsky's bread. I will pick their sourdough over the rest but I am never disappointed in their bread.
Just saying as a fan of scholtzskys thier sour dough bread is good. HOWEVER them and Panera, and mccalisters are not "SUBS"
you do forget that we don't need no stinkin' sauce for our brisket in Texas. That paper is just sopping up grease, and believe me, a fatty brisket has plenty of that for me and the paper.
