Don’t really like to criticize Edd too much ‘cause he’s one of the best. Nonetheless the torque converter was still full of a significant amount of the burnt fluid. Should have been some comment on that...can it be drained? Some older torque converters had drain plugs. Also, the fluid was probably burnt due to slippage of the bands and clutches. Replacing clutches means a tear down but it’s quite possible that the bands could have been adjusted with the sump off...worth a try and comment.
Henry B I commented on the fluid remaining in TC because the webpage said they flushed the unit but made no mention of the TC. I’m no auto box expert but I have built a few. Your comment on the clutches is incorrect, there are clutch friction plates and they do transmit the torque. It is only in the TC where the fluid actually transmits the torque. The fluid in the TC is pumped from the same reservoir sump as all the rest so if it has been degraded through heat it is going to dilute the fresh stuff put in. Clearly your recommendation to not flush the auto box should be directed at Edd, and not me, since that is what the episode was about. And I would suggest that if you make a statement like that you should give some clear reasons why.
There's nothing wrong with doing a fluid exchange-even on an old transmission. This can be done by just allowing the transmission (or a machine) to pump the fluid out as you replace it with new. If you don't have a machine, you can just disconnect a cooler line and let the fluid run into a pan as you top it off-stopping once the fluid coming out looks new or you've added the total capacity. Power flushes or aggressive flushing chemicals can dislodge gunk or debris and cause old, tired seals to leak-which can be problematic on older transmissions. I know some people that don't do fluid flushes but they'll do a couple of drain and refills over a short period to try to get out most of the old fluid-since a pan service only gets about half the total fluid. ATF has dispersant properties, so introducing new fluid is going to cause some cleaning effect. If a transmission service causes your transmission to die, it wasn't long for the world anyway.
Generally people do a spill and fill instead of the entire oil volume (in fact this usually replaces only a fraction of the total fluid volume.) Many manufacturers recommend this approach and, as long as it's done regularly, there shouldn't be an issue. As for if flushing a transmission would cause damage I would say only if it's on its last legs. Sometimes the clutch material in the fluid is all that's causing the clutches to engage so a fluid change causes it to slip. That said I wouldn't hesitate to do a filter or spill and fill on an older transmission as, on balance, the probability of extending its life is greater than the probability of ending it. 👍

I bought my nissan suv new.. at 76k miles i noticed a warm or hotter feeling from the plastic area below my auto shifter Checking the fluid it was engine color oil... Did the poorm mans flush no machine with about 12 quarts I have done that 5 times and i am at 295,000 miles original transmission !!!!!!!
Hello there, I have a BMW E32 735i that originally uses a 4hp-22 gearbox, the 1st gearbox broke down and we replaced it with another 4h-22 of the same car, same spec. Now the second gearbox we put in was changing gears on its own, it would put itself on P,D or R, there was no way of driving it. So we diagnosed it and solved that situation, the car was running fine changing smoothly, then it suddenly didn't want to change anymore, now it's only driving on 1st gear n won't shift upwards.... Do you know might me wrong, please help?
Did you notice just before Ed's demise, Mike was filming at garage by himself? Cleaning seats, fixing headliner,sorting wheels. While Ed was at beach...lol
@@groovejet33 I remember reading somewhere that Edd said he left because he didn't like the direction the US producers were taking the show, with lesss emphasis on actual car repair and more on the whole flipping angle. Typical American remake BS, they miss the entire point of what makes a show successful.

Ed turns up and pulls a few faces. Also Ed's whole attitude is not happy. Like when Mike turns up with a car. Ed" s not happy 🤣
