What I don't get is why he was less consistently aggressive and hard hitting during the 2012-2016 time period. Even when he reached a nice prime in level again from late 2014 to mid 2016, he wasn't this aggressive. His technique literally looked different. There's grand slam matches from 2012-2015 that he wouldn't have lost perhaps if he was harder hitting and as focused as he has been when he has won. Shouldn't have lost against Nadal or Murray at the US Open and at least 1 if not both of the Wawrinka losses in 2014-2015 was avoidable. There was def a lull after the 2012 Australian Open. Parts of 2023 have been the closest to the particular version of Djokovic seen in 2011, with some improvements in some areas and understandable physical downgrades.
Thats because playing that agressiveness had some physical toll in Novak so he couldnt finish the 2011 season in a good form. He just started to play more efficient tennis to last all the season with good physique. Now i think he can play more aggresive again because he play less tournaments.
USO 2011 was already showing some consequences of hitting like this. It's one to hit like this for a short patch but going deep in every tournament, winning most of them, it takes its toll. He had a shoulder injury in development and already struggled with serving in USO, and post USO he didn't do much. My suspicion is that he was advised to take it down a few notches otherwise his career would be drastically shorter. That said, he could have been more calculated with aggression and pick better moments to inject pace instead of going all guns blazing, so there's that, and yes I agree that some matches were lost merely on his passivity.
