    I was listening to the Aman Brother podcast, the one with Zero T and he was asked what it was like working with Calibre and he said one of the most important things he picked up from him was it doesn’t matter how simple a track is, music is made to be listened to not looked at. I think in modern dnb we are so quick to keep adding layers of textures to create this wall of noise because the genre has evolved but ultimately it’s the vibe is the most important thing

      But you need butter or it's just really dry bread. Butter=Love.
      A track can be simple but it needs to come from a place of love or its just dry bread.

    • @iloveACID
      @iloveACID Місяць тому

      No because it's baked big difference and if it was just cooked the bread would be grey in colour... also toast has a butterability scale test.
      That a master baker must consider when making hes dough.
      It be like making music with no sound.
      Source ... a baker 1881

    Pure example of you dont need to be complex in production to make a banger. Some tracks just capture a vibe, and Pulp Fiction is just that.... Timeless tune! 🔥

    Alex had such an ear for minimalism + his (and Wax Doctor's) love for techno (hence the 707/727/808/909s in their tracks).

    Never been my fav track but I dig the creative chopping. Great breakdown. People get twisted about your titles. The answer here is no, it’s not lazy, the flips and flips are simple but effective and the samples are cheesy maybe but charming when paired with jungle chopping.

    Fascinating. I've always kind of hated this move towards minimalism. (I loved the complexity and swing of jungle back then, and this made everything so much more boring). But actually you are totally on the money. This is so minimal and so brilliant at the same time. I just wish it hadn't been quite so influential 🙂

  • @superrrnova1986

    I love simple songs. I make hip hop and have a song that is a single piano, a bass-line and a stringed instrument.
    I also have one that is entirely made out of three melodies I made on bells.
    These are some of my favourite songs. It takes real restraint and vision to stick with such a simple backing track.
    A lot of producers never have this opportunity as they start with the beat first

    Non quantized for this track works better imo, integral part of the track sound

  • @michamaolepszy3317
    @michamaolepszy3317 Місяць тому +2

    With the quantization it depends on the samples and the aim of using the percussive sample. In this case this clap works better with no quantization. Generally I think that perkussive samples like claps, bongos etc. can work without quantization. Maybe some of the tambs and shaker too. But the real test for it starts when you try to mix two tracks with turntables. Espacially in drum and bass genre. When you have two tunes with no quantized loops etc. sometimes it is not possible to mix them. Some time ago I've recorded the three piece mix with 60 tunes from the 90s, and some of the blends were almost imbossible to mix! But you know... practice, practice and practice...

  • @veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
    @veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Місяць тому +1

    3:30 unquantized. went thru all opinions on the matter myself. i thought it always sounded better quantized, then hiphop unquantized, then electronic quantized, and now i finally found a good sequencer that will let me unquantize the synths. so now i'm back on the unquantized train!

    At my weekly in the 90's, the tunes that had little 'imperfections' were more evocative, more emotional and human. The slight imperfections gave life to the song, forcing the listener to engage in a way that provokes an earned depth.

    I remember being kind of annoyed when Pulp Fiction became so big. I appreciated Source Direct and Photek style drum chopping, so Pulp Fiction really did seem lazy. But it sounds so good through a big system with that bass. It's a monster.

    Alex first used that r’n’b beat in his remix of Model 500 “The Flow” which is arguably a better tune (the bass line!!) and worth checking out if you’re a fan of this - mad to think he did these tracks in 1995 as well

    Whilst quite partial to a bit of Reece, I never particularly gelled with Metalheadz output (despite his involvement), lacking a certain substantial something thats hard to put a specific finger on. Selling themselves though, they where really, really good at that. Talking of the era though, Johnny L's - '2 of us EP' ..downright incredible; but then I particularly dig things with an ambient, ethereal twist to them :)

    surely the last bass note of the loop needs to be lower? the very last note after 2 bars. its quite obviously a variation of the first bar. with a semitone (i think) lower end note just compared with the original. if it wasn't for that tiny oversight, it would sound basically identical haha

    And yet it works so well. You dont need loads of production elements and layereing, infact thats everything that wrong with modern DnB, overproduced and no vibe. Modern DnB sound like pop music
