Is the risk of developing this strategic partnership with India to counter weight China not similar to developing China to counter weight the USSR in the cold war? Do we need another heavy weight in the BRICS with a stated goal of countering the West? Why not diversify? Lots of developing countries waiting for a chance.
The problem is that if we ignore and fail to influence India's direction, the US and Canada will likely continue to decline in International power. India is projected to have more young and working and driving their economy while we in North America will be seeing the reverse with the boomers and Gen X ageing out of the workforce en mass and becoming dependent on the state and youth to support their needs. India currently knows that they are on ther verge of becoming possibly having the worlds strongest workeforce and see the state canada and other western countries are facing. We currently have to bring in immigration to fuel our economy to combat the projected shrinking workforce, whereas India seems to have too many people currently hence them coming here. In the short term this is a really bad situation but eventually we are gonna have to cozy up to them or lose power and influence in asia.

They, and China, have around 1.4 billion mouths to feed at a time when extreme weather events are hitting their food production abilities hard. By 2050 they are expected to have a 10% loss to not only food production, but manufacturing as well, considering the fact that workers slow down when the weather gets hotter and that only 10% of Indian homes have air conditioning. India will fall faster than other countries, except perhaps China.
At a very minimum, we should not make the same mistakes with India as we did with China.
