      For me, I like the Frenchie that looks like your dog, Mr. Cassara. I don’t have one - yet. Right now I have a rat terrier/mountain Feist. She is 11 years old. So when this dog dies...I think I’ll look for a Frenchie. And you already know what color she’ll be! 🙂

    This is a very tough subject. On one hand the Frenchy is an awesome dog. We have rescued three and fell in love with them all BUT they have lots of health issues, expensive health issues. Allergies are a given, you really can't escape that but it is usually a food problem so finding the protein that works best for them. Our last Frenchy had to have rabbit and he still required frequent baths. Next big problem is IVDD Intervertebral disc disease. As much as frenchies love to bounce around and jump they should not be allowed to. A mild case can result in a 3 month crate rest or it can be a full-blown spinal surgery that range in the $10,000+ range. When we rested our last French it was a home surrender and they disclosed that he had epilepsy but it was controlled through medication. It was not. He had a seizure about every 5-7 weeks. A seizure usually resulted in an emergency room visit and a couple day stay in an oxygen crate. He survived with us for 2.5 years at a cost of over $50,000 in ER visits. Listen there are always exceptions to the rules and a healthy French is possible but rare. A safe bet is to stay away from designer frenchies. The bus, lilacs, merles as they are brought with issues. They are easy to fall in love with but be ready to spend some money and NOT drop them of at a shelter when things get rough.

    Our Frenchie could be a twin of yours, a male @33#. He’s about 2 and 1/2 now and we got him one week before the initial Covid lockdown. The breeder who offered him had three left from his litter but he stood out as the big boy. We’ve had bull terriers, standard and miniature, and PBGV’s but Buddy, our frenchie, is the best of the lot. Great video, great information, one quibble. Buddy is stubborn, even in obedience classes the trainer, who trained police dogs, said the dog has a mind of his own. Buddy knows basic commands and ids not out of control but he has a mind of his own. Best he knows good from bad. So far, no health problems even though he is more white than the cream he was as a pup. Other than shedding and grueling, no issues…yet. Oh, he loves his crate. It’s his safe place..

    You are describing my experience with our frenchie to the T. Ours is 8 months old and has been healthy up until now. We did switch him from kibble to cooked food with added supplementation at 12-14 weeks old. We noticed he no longer had tear stains and no more snoring after removing kibble from his diet. We do keep up with brushing, washing paws and cleaning skin folds, also reducing possible allergies. He is very social, alert and smart. He alerts us when anyone approaches the home or our car. He is not reactive to other dogs or people, he is also freakishly strong and is very gentle to children...he knows the difference between adults and children. He has no phobias, he prefers to be with us 100% of the time. HIGH maintenance is not an understatement! You need to be available and dependable for a Frenchie, not for first time pet owners is correct, he is our 3rd family dog. We work with a trainer 1x every 2 weeks, early training was key to us, he can get comfy and stubborn, but he has learned so much with his training... he knows he is the prince at home.

    Thank you for sharing the good and the bad so that people can make an informed decision before they go out and enrich some of the few unscrupulous breeders out there. My friend and his son insisted that they had to have a Frenchie puppy from a breeder. We begged them to go to the beautiful SPCA that our city has, but no, they insisted on getting only this kind of puppy. In our city you won’t find dogs or cats for sale in stores because there are plenty of adoptable animals available.
    Luckily they purchased health insurance because it’s been one problem after another. First it was allergies, then explosive diarrhea (outside) and then tons of back problems. His vet didn’t want him to get neutered until he was full grown. The dog got very aggressive. I used to be able to get him to drop what was in his mouth or I could get him to open his mouth, but he bite me once and I never tried again. He would pick up everything and eat it. The owner said to bribe him with a treat, but why reward bad behavior? I know all this because I walked him Monday through Friday. I’m not making this up, but he would get so excited pulling at stuff that he would get an erection and start ejaculating. I recorded it for the owner because who would believe me. He finally neutered him after 18 months of begging, but he was still really aggressive and only the emissions stopped.
    I am not trying to be some kind of pervert, I just want to be a help for others. A lot of men don’t want to have it done because they think of themselves. The animal really doesn’t know the difference. We have a cat with terrible gum disease and he needed all of his teeth removed. Once his gums were healed, he eats hard food and treats with no problems. If he was in the wild, he would die without teeth to tear apart a live mouse and eat it, but he lives with us and we feed him.
    Thank you so much for maybe reading this long comment. Maybe you have time now that you don’t play video games for too many hours?

    I know this video is older and quite a bit of time has past but I just want to say, Adopting for your First Dog Ever can be very difficult, borderline impossible without having a personal history with a vet and references about your handling and care of animals.
    I have always been a big "Adopt Don't Shop" fan but when I started doing research into rescuing and adoptions, i learned that decent rehomers will do some serious research and time into potential new owners bc they do NOT want to see that dog returned AGAIN. A lot in my area wanted a few months of vet records for previous pets (of which I personally never had) and references, so in at least SOME cases you have to buy/be gifted a dog first to build a repertoire as a good owner inorder to be able to adopt/rescue later on.

    • @TonyCassara
      @TonyCassara  2 роки тому +2

      For sure I’m also seeing dog adoption places charging near breeder prices for rescues to deter people from adopting and reselling them.

    How long did it take your Frenchie to heal after the nares and soft palate surgery? Did you notice a difference within the first few days or did it take a while for recovery? Kashmir, my female Frenchie, had it done this past Wednesday and I feel as though she’s still having a rough time. I have an email out to the doctor but I know that healing times vary so I’m just trying to get others who have had the procedure done stories. Thank you in advance!

    • @TonyCassara
      @TonyCassara  3 роки тому +1

      Each dog recovers differently. For Tortellino there was an immediate improvement that got better over a few days. Other dogs I've heard needing a week before seeing the improvement. Just be sure to keep pestering your doctor if you don't see any improvement! Sometimes there can be complications that need to be corrected.

    My fiance, me and our 9 year old would love a frenchie. We have googled certain things as we both work full time but she would be let out for 30 minutes at lunch time Mon-Fri (on his/her own from 8:30 - 4:30 apart from the 30 mins at lunch). Google results say they are great dogs for full time workers but everyone on youtube says otherwise. We thought they are small, generally low energy and really cute but might not be the right dog for us :(

    • @TonyCassara
      @TonyCassara  3 роки тому +4

      You might consider adopting an older dog! A puppy will require a lot more attention. Once Tortellino was about 2 years old he was more comfortable being left home for long periods but as a puppy he needed a lot more human presence. Consider an older frenchie that needs a forever home, lots of wonderful rescues out there trying to help them find homes! 🤗

      Frenchies get very attached to their owners (by which is meant members of their pack). They do NOT like to be left alone, so if you are going to be gone all day, a Frenchie is not for you. Or you would not be good for the Frenchie. If my wife or I are gone and there’s just one of us at home, our little guy gets anxious. He wants both of us home together. I have to stress that if you are going to have to leave your Frenchie home alone all day, do the dog a kindness and leave him for a family who can be with him consistently.

    Another issue I had when he was a puppy is everyone runs up to you to pet them and are over the top with their dumb baby noises.
    This has caused my frenchie to become more hyperactive than a frenchie should be.
    Just a word to the wise don’t approach dog owners in this way.
    I even had a woman come running up and pick him up and start kissing him all over before I had time to react 😡
    After now having a frenchie I see the issues they have and I hope that one day they are breed in a different way and the current form of frenchie banned. To help the breed overcome their health problems

    After you mention your dog had breathing problems I thought that when I first saw his face. It’s very flat. Many people when buying a frenchie do not look at the nostrils on them and to see if the are open or closed. It’s the breeders over breeding and also in the states they are breeding them smaller. My fawn I wanted one that looked the same as the ones in the vintage pictures. Nowadays they look very wide and flat nosed. I went to see his parents before purchasing. Many people buy without seeing the mother or father.

      I'd rather tell you the truth than make it seem like it's a great idea. French Bulldogs are a lot of work and they're really unhealthy :( There are so many other dogs that need a home and maybe if you're lucky you'll find a Frenchie that needs re-homing but just know that it will be a lot of work and money to maintain them.

      @@TonyCassara thank you for your response , i live in nyc and it gets really cold outside and really hot inside with heaters so it is looking like a complicated situation ☹️

      Yeah they’re sensitive little things but I’m sure lots of people in NYC have them. You might join Fab Frenchies on Facebook and ask if anyone there has tips.
