    John's level of knowledge is mind blowing. 2 hour technical talk, no slides, no notes. Just a man in a chair on a stage.

    What a BAMF: he just shows up, drops 2 hrs of incisive VR commentary, and then politely excuses himself. *applause*

    Thats why I love playing games with a Headphone, it makes up for a great 3D space immersion.

      +Lucky Water Rat I thought it was very well framed. Fuck zoom.

      +Lucky Water Rat i dont agree. i can see my head in the left of the very center of the screen. I am quite pleased with seeing my head there, where i sat right in front of him and got to listen unimpeded at minimal distance

      RyanBurke I haven't found the talk (yet), but I think that the guy's name is 'Matt Hooper':

      I'll keep looking- let me know if you find anything yourself. :)
      Edit: I think this clip actually contains the scene that is mentioned, but it isn't the talk afaik:

  • @RandomGuyyy

    3:42 "How many people have used one of the latest trade show darlings, either a CV1 or a Vive or something like that?"
    Is John Carmack referring to the Oculus Consumer Version 1? The latest prototype was Crescent Bay, so does this mean that CV1 is Crescent Bay?

    • @ruthalasmenovich5506
      @ruthalasmenovich5506  9 років тому +1

      redchant I suspect he miss-spoke and meant to see Crescent Bay, but anything is possible!

    • @RandomGuyyy
      @RandomGuyyy 9 років тому +1

      Ruthalas Menovich Without reading too much into it, John Carmack is not the type of person who makes that kind of verbal slip-up. But he's still human, of course!

    • @ruthalasmenovich5506
      @ruthalasmenovich5506  9 років тому

      redchant I'd only suspect a slip-up because he could have meant 'CB', which is only a single letter different.
      ~shrug~ I suppose we'll find out! (Perhaps at E3.)

    • @DeathBringer769
      @DeathBringer769 9 років тому

      redchant I think you've already read too much into it with that leap of logic that Carmack is an infallible machine. Anyone can mis-speak or misremember something on the fly in a live environment. Let's keep arrogant projections of perfection aside. No one's perfect.
      P.S. Upon multiple listenings, I am hearing him say "CB1" as in Crescent Bay 1. Our ears aren't perfect either, however :P

    The way to do proper stereoscopic 360 degree videos is with light field tech, such as with Lytro's Immerge, that thing is awesome! Hopefully someday they'll make a smaller consumer hand-held.

    He DID really talk 2 hours wow :D

  • @CanMetan
    @CanMetan 9 років тому

    Well he did talk about a lot of technical aspects of it. What I took from this is that VR is going to push a whole new set of products into the market. Possibly it can change the design of games not only because of the display technology and HCI but because of the limitations imposed on the end user. Not being able to move etc. Interesting talk, thanks for sharing.

  • @bendelzer
    @bendelzer 9 років тому +2

    Yes he clearly has passion for VR, and its nice to hear some deep content on the subject. However, I find it ironic that he talked for nearly 2 hours about a powerful visualization tool without using any visual tools.

    Consoles are going to have a nightmare rendering anything for VR and keep it looking good, many of the trade offs he's talking about come down to how much GPU power you have and with consoles the answer is - not much. The DK2 experience on a high end PC that can nail 75fps/75hz all synced up and tracking smoothly, it's a really compelling experience.

      ***** The PS4's Morpheus headset tech can interpolate 60fps up to 120fps and according to many first hand accounts, it works pretty great. Keep that in mind when thinking of the minimum bar for fps on console; they can work with a lot less fps with good interpolation. They are also obviously going to hold back using the "shiniest graphics" to keep more fps when making a VR title. They naturally aren't going to look as pretty as other console games where they can afford 30 or lower, and it definitely won't hold a candle graphically to an expensive, powerful PC rig running max graphics at 90+fps with an Oculus Rift. We're going to have to settle for less graphics to get a VR experience that runs smoothly on console. Interpolation can only help so much, say for example they are rendering at 20fps, no amount of interpolation is going to help that feel actually smooth and not nauseating in VR. But bear in mind they can work with about 45fps and above with that tech.

      +Argon Theos The issue with cloud computing is the latency, if you want a pretty effect on the screen which you feel connected to, something that you've caused then there's always going to be a delay between your console requesting that and a server farm delivering it. Also who is going to pay for these server banks exactly, that's expensive, Xbox owners are just going to end up paying for hardware they have rental access to at best which could have been spent on buying a high end GPU for a PC where they can do proper 4k, 60fps and have all the settings turned up.

      +Deathbrewer I've done interpolation tests on DmC and Vanquish captured from an Xbox 360 and then interpolated to 60fps. DmC looked better (not perfect because the interpolated image was like a ghost frame rather than a fully rendered frame), but Vanquish didn't look very different at all once interpolated. This led me to realize that fps can be worked around, and I'm confident the guys working on Playstation VR will do their best to make things look really good. I'm more concerned about the comfort, build quality and device price tbh.
