2015 E3 - Palmer Talks about the Consumer Rift
Well, this aged badly.
u
y pensar que se retraso un año por la pandemia
Um yes. About that metaverse thing...
6 years later and this is in my recommended, wow
Maaan everything they talked about has been solved
irony: School of Arts doesn't know how to use a zoom lens
I can now press a button to flip tables. Awesome.
Quiet, so went to ua-cam.com/video/xtrNiYW8lh4/v-deo.html
Trash crowd
3.5 years later we're still waiting for the next generation!
The way to do proper stereoscopic 360 degree videos is with light field tech, such as with Lytro's Immerge, that thing is awesome! Hopefully someday they'll make a smaller consumer hand-held.
Philip Rosedale did _not_ build "the Metaverse", nor is he really qualified to speak about what a Metaverse actually is. SecondLife is a Meta-World designation, and not very scalable in architecture or contiguous spaces. What is my qualification for making this statement, you might ask? I wrote the modern definition and hierarchy of Metaverse for Solipsis Decentralized Metaverse, IEEE Virtual Worlds Standard group (as their vice-chair), and have published research in Association for Computing Machinery - and if you look up Metaverse on Wikipedia, the definition cites those sources (ultimately my definition). So believe me when I say - watching Philip Rosedale talk for 45 minutes about "What is the Metaverse" will be 45 minutes of your life you cannot get back - full of misinformation and half-understanding mixed with a healthy dose of bullshit.
I am now reading through your paper Mr. Burns. Thanks for your comment. Do you have any presentations on similar topics I can frequent and recommend? (Presentations you have given or are more accurate to the IEEE definition you developed.)
Mmm.
Isn't the Metaverse a large space that contains the Multiverse
No the Megaverse is a group of Multiverses.
ASDRION TM I said metaverse not megaverse
I know. But the Metaverse does not contain the Multiverse. The Megaverse does.
Oh ok
But keep in mind that stuf like Multiverse,Xenoverse,Megaverse ect have about zero proof.
i love how he starts with if you wanna start some shit put it on paper lets go
Oh dear. Pretty flawed. It misses the fact that AR/MR is where the majority of people will meet with tech. VR will always remain a small niche/-s. It looks awful and feels alienating. Give me a real person (even wearing AR/MR headgear) over a virtual muppet avatar, yuck. Why are they wasting time on this? Having said that - well done on the technical side.
Damn, he thinks fast. ;) Must be the fastest thinker i have ever heard speaking... But it's not the first time i have watched him on youtube. He gets allot of information out there, fast!
Elon musk thinks so fast that he starts stammering
Hey how do you download this from NextVR? All I can find is bunch of .nvm files.
Another guy downloaded them and contacted my to upload them. So I don't know.
Good to see a web vr mention! and he didn't completely write it off
Playstation will dig the deepest into the potential 1st gen VR gaming market. Launching a high quality product worldwide at a good price. The maths is simple. Maybe 10-20% of people who buy one HMD will buy a second HDM within 3 years. Even fewer will buy from a competitor. If Sony deigns to support PCs with their HMD they will crush Oculus and Vive utterly. I am a PC gamer and I can see it.
What did he say after "Marketing smarm that wasn't there?" It got cut off on the live feed. :-(
can you tag these as 3d for cardboard use ?
UA-cam handles the aspect ratio poorly if I switch on the 3D flag. It tries to distort the 3:4 to 16:9. If you happen to know how to resolve that, let me know!
Could you add these to the Oculus Video app please? It begs to be there. It's hard to guess what FOV and projection it's done in. In Virtual Desktop it looks distorted no matter what option combinations I choose.
Do you have any idea how one goes about adding them?
Honestly, I thought Oculus would do it. ;) The app plays user content, but it would be better if it was native for correct image parameters. Anyway, I played it with Whirligig, lots of tweaking projection, fov, distance, scale and it looked quite OK, even if it still felt a bit off.
These videos are from NextVR, and may be viewable within their app. Maybe check that out!
how do I view this on a rift?
The physics of the device are not hard to grasp, think microscopic sized mirrors reflecting light into your eye from a projector. If you have seen a sign above a checkout in LIDL or elsewhere where LED light is bent inside a pane of glass, that's the very crude version. The trick is to make the 'mirrors' so small, yet individually adressable, that your eye can't resolve each mirror. The advent of VR, AR and mixed reality has huge implications for society. Millions of people live alone, particularly the elderly. They could have permanent companions that they can interact with. The sex industry will have a 'virtual' field day since tele-presence could put 'someone' into your environment, rather than VR which puts you in their environment. Whole fields of human interaction could change. Education might no longer require centralised resources. Dealing with companies or government agencies would no longer entail dealing with a 'faceless' individual or disconnected voice on the phone. Right now you can book a 'mystery weekend' in some hotels. The actors playing their part right in among the guests. With Magic Leap you could have the same experience.. anywhere. The entertainment industry could change from a rectangular 2D (false 3D) window or enclosed in their reality in VR, to blending into your reality. One wonders whether it would have future mental health implications, since to all intents and purposes it mimics the state of being bipolar (Schizophrenia). Will we one day not be able to distinguish between the real and the virtual? There was a time, not that long ago when if you were seen walking in the street talking to yourself, everyone thought you were crazy. Now, it's normal. I can understand Magic Leaps reluctance to rush out a product which would have limited uses: gaming, porn etc when they know the huge implications it could have on the basis of how society works. The current internet age and VR are breaking down national borders, Magic Leap could make it so that there is no perception of a border between you and anyone or anything in the world since there is no 'entry gate' as we have now. VR entails you wearing a mask, if you want to use it, the other can't see your face in it's entirety. Magic Leap wouldn't have that restriction. To an outside viewer you appear to be wearing spectacles, which are transparent. They can't see what you see, but they see you reacting to it.
Thank you for the SBS! Was curious to relive it in VR all over again. There was a lot of info to absorb in person the first time round.
No problem! I am glad to help. (I am also envious that you got to see it in person!)
It was a bit surreal to be in the presence of so many 3d, vfx and gaming giants! Humbling and motivating. We did try vlogging the whole event on our channel. Maybe you can live vicariously through our experience :)
I bet it was! I will definitely check them out. Do you mind if I add them to my OC3 playlist?
Sure thing!
Source thanks to a reddit user!
too short. :)

Certainly! Sorry it took so long to apply the edit. :)
Legend but he makes my brain hurt.
Yea he is a bit smarter than the average bear =)
the guy works for the industry more than 30 years, I couldn't except anything, but... this guy knows a little bit more than...
jesus christ its john carmack
MrAhmedUA HOLY FUCK. YOU'RE RIGHT!
Ground breaking! Easily the most interesting subject of the near future.
So, how does the optical illusion of "black" work if you can only add light?
Chris Parker it won't be blocking the light.... that's why microsoft called it holograms... and not virfual objects...... it will be slightly transparent ...... what he was talking about is most likely a particular demo where with a visual illusion something looks black
Fabio aged. =(
Those chairs though ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
If they wish to find ways to tell a stereo narrative the should look into L.A.R.P.ing.
oh wow, I know exactly how this will look, not the device, have a very rough, most probably wrong idea what that could eventually look like - I understand how our reality will appear to us (if I correctly decoded the cryptic descriptions), and more over I know what I would want to have on in this.. no, wrong word, I know what I want in my world, that I don't have now. fek, I should learn how to code...
+Toxis hm, I even think I know the best, well, the only, way how to interact with apps (hm - avatars/apps?:) in this new reality. If we want this thing to be inconspicuous, not rude to others in public, there is only way to , ah, ok, two, but that one is quite sci-FY right now, and would look even more creepy. Guys, I know you are not reading, but if by some chance you do - remember what killed google glass - the creepy factor. Go with inconspicuous, if you catch my drift.
Where can I buy the final version of your product?? I'm french so that would be great!
Philip Rosedale, my hero
The VR bug bit me pretty hard, i have dk2, leap motion orion, i'm developing for it and people consider me crazy when i talk about the future of VR, but what David is talking about here is so much beyond. This will not be just a step from a dumbphone to a smartphone, or from CRT to LCD. VR will fundamentally change the definition of the word reality and will become one of the biggest leaps of technological progress in modern history. Anyone who thinks that this is bananaz, bookmark my acc and message me in 2021, i'll get you any high end gadget of your choosing if that is not evident by then
yeah we r just at the tipping point ....for the first time since the first displays were manufactured this is a new way of viewing and interacting with information the singularity of tech is coming
Thats why I love playing games with a Headphone, it makes up for a great 3D space immersion.
So the 'projection' is projected into the eye, but projected from where? From a projector on the inside of a headset, or from an external projector in the upper corner of a room? How did all those people in the gymnasium see the same thing at the same time? They weren't wearing headsets...
The "demo" in the gym was fake, if that's what you mean. They all would have to be wearing the headsets to see. From what I've read, at least in 1 patent, there's a pocket projector that sends the light through fiber optics into the glasses, then splits up the light in the glasses and sends it into your eyes, at different angles, for Depth of Field/Plane of focus. www.wired.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/magic-leap_0043_Layer-19.jpg
A dynamic wave front of light that goes all the way to the end of the universe? Interesting.
this is good news for the future of gaming and for nintendo
nintendo hasn't explicitly stated vulkan support on nx. likely will use an in-house low level api like sony.
man that woman at the beginning is lovely :) <3
Ah, this is the human chaperone, does it come with the system? ;P Joking aside, they must be doing something right if they still exist and can afford a booth at CES.
Palmer Luckey sos un genio espero q todo lo dices se haga realidad en un futuro sercano
i have subscribed to you my friend, always good to see another vr enthusiast
+Supa Blank Thanks! It always is. :)
