  • Are you ready for the spectacle of colors? Let’s go to the city of Esna to explore one of the last ancient Egyptian temples ever built and the last one decorated with hieroglyphs! Located around 60 km south of Luxor, the existing, ancient structure is currently situated in an enormous pit, almost 10 meters below the current city level. Its most known feature is the columns, which not only display beautiful and one-of-a-kind capitals, but are almost entirely covered, not with the offering scenes, but with religious texts.
Join me to learn about the history of this site, see its beauty as if you’d be there yourself, and learn more about the ancient rituals and the principal deities of the temple - the ancient Egyptian gods of creation - Khnum and Neith.
The history of the place is so rich that not only you will hear about the 18th dynasty pharaohs like Amenhotep II or Thutmose III but also the names of the Roman emperors like Claudius, Commodus, Trajan, Domitian, and many more. There are also the Ptolemies, who erected the second temple; among them Ptolemy V, who initiated its construction, and his successors, who finished and started decorating the temple like Ptolemy VI, Ptolemy VIII, and Cleopatra II.
    Let’s go!
    Explored in February 2023.

Oh Ireana, what a magical looking place. The amount of information on the walls, ceiling and the pillars of this temple is amazing, it must be like reading huge text books, I bet you never stop learning something new when you go there. The colours are brilliant. If that temple is 10meters deeper than the city then I wonder what else is hidden under there that we dont know about. Your mind for this history is incredible, you are such an impressive teacher.

The problem with our ancient religion was that the central role of King was essential for any temple rituals... so even though this temple was built by Egyptian engineers, workers and priests without any slight contribution of any roman emperor, still the one who was ruling had to get his name written on walls to complete the rituals ... BTW if people really know what Roman occupation did to our Egyptian culture and to ancient Egypt, the world would be shocked ... it was a complete crime committed against ancient Egypt

Irena should respond for herself. For me, Egypt has thousands of years of invasion, migration, trade, etc. To simplify the culture to one particular MODERN idea of race is like trying to say they had tanks, helicopters, and light bulbs from the hieroglyphs at Dendera. It doesn't make sense. In some cases men were depicted dark skinned, women light skinned, because men worked the fields and stone quarries - outside. Women typically manage the house - inside. Then again these are generalizations. Recent depictions of Cleopatra by Netflix are probably inaccurate because she was Greek and not Egyptian. I recall seeing ancient coins with her image. She was known for her political maneuvers rather than her beauty.

This was built by this or that? without showing us the papyrus receipts saying who built it, that is the problem with Egyptology, a bunch of theories.
If an Egyptian temple was built by either the Greeks or the Romans it would simply be a matter or showing us the Roman of Greek records to corroborate it.
More likely, these temples were built by Egyptians and if the Greeks or Romans had anything to do with a building it would only be to commission and pay for it.
