Ahhh! So much fun! I love when you go “thrifting” and take us along. I didn’t have to get on a plane, go through customs, or anything other than join you, sitting in the comfort of my home. I, too, am drawn to transferware and agree that the older ones are more to my taste. I did enjoy the turquoise/teal green glasses you passed by, but it is one of my favorite colors. There also was a plate that was hanging on the shelves of dishes that was barely in shot (it was floral, I think and felt a bit folk art inspired) that I rather enjoyed. Thank you for sharing your shopping trip with us! Glad you finally found your coupés.

Great vlog. I agree that thrift shops are more hit or miss in finding treasures and one of the thrift stores now in my area are selecting the best and most valuable items and putting them on-line at very high prices. Sad. Thanks for taking me along on your fun shopping trips. I loved it.

It was fun going along with you! I just recently returned from France, and we went to a couple of Emmaus while we were there. It was my first time going and it was so much fun!! Love the crock! That was one thing that I picked up too. I also loved the chandeliers! I picked up two when we went shopping. 🤗 TFS!

Love brocanting with you at Emmaus! The books are so beautiful......I always adore all the cotton and linen sheets.....so addicted and usually bring home 5-10 sheets in my suitcases! Also a fan of some monogrammed china/porcelain and the transferware pieces! Found some terracotta knife rests with fleur de lis designs.....just wonderful for one euro!

I totally love thrifting / flea mkts ,so thank you kindly for sharing the adventures. I loved the green handled soup crock and would’ve snagged them if there was a pair . I am all about the special pieces that add a coziness to the meal experience. There were many other things I kept rewinding to check out lol , so fun! We were in Paris last summer and had only a too brief taste of the huge flea market experience and it was almost overwhelming so I’m determined to hit the smaller ones and second hand shops next time and be more prepared! Until then I’ll feast my eyes on your finds ! ❤
Yes the big ones are overwhelming (Puces de Saint Ouen in Paris, Puces du Canal in Lyon), it is almost too much for my brain to process. And although being in a place where everything is curated is HIGHLY exciting, I personally get so much joy from finding something in a cluttered and dusty corner of a thrift store. Prices won't be the same and it also feels like I have made a good find instead of just gone to a good brocante where someone else has done all the hunting :)

Will do! Leaving for Paris in a few days and hope to visit the “puces de Saint Ouen” which is the largest concentration of antiques dealers in the world! Haven’t been in a long time and didn’t really like it before so excited to see how I experience it now. And will definitely try to film!
Thank you so much for taking us along.I love the crock and can’t wait to see you style it. I like soup tureens in white I do serve soups in them but sometimes I will arrange flowers in them. I once needed 35 champagne coups for a party for my sons wedding ( a rehearsal dinner) I went looking in all my usual thrift shops and found a large box with 40! For 20 dollars. All simple with no design which is what I wanted. Whilst cleaning them they were all the same except 2…. They had the letter S engraved on them which is the first letter of our last name. So I put them on a silver tray with flowers , for my son and his fiancé. My best find ever !

I actually didn't look at the prices but I guess if you buy them at an Emmaüs, they will probably be a few euros each. I will check next time. I may go back, I kind of regretted not having bought a few nices ones that match the color palettes I am using for our rentals!
I agree the crockery is a little too patterned for the farmhouse.. I get the feeling you want the ambiance to be simple and rustic ..you have a good eye… I liked that little marble topped though … love the broconte

Lovely, varied pieces of crystal, glass, plates, etc. We were fortunate to inherit delft, carnival and cut crystal from my mom and grandmother. I'm not sure if the younger generations here will appreciate the value and significance of these coveted pieces. Europeans will probably always understand the beauty of olden ware. Very nice trip. A 6:43 je crois que ce sont des assiettes de Moustiers. Le motif est juste superbe. Moi je m'en sers pour servir les "entrées" : je dépose les assiettes dans de grandes assiettes blanches avec un liseré doré et c'est trop beau ! à 7:31 ce sont peut-être des assiettes de Digoin .... Pour ma part j'aime bien le "Renoleau" d'Angoulême. J'en ai plusieurs assiettes dépareillées et je trouve que cela fait une jolie table. A 6:32 Il y avait de belles coupes de champagne aussi. Emmaüs Dijon à l'air d'avoir de la belle vaisselle.
Pour celles de Moustiers je ne sais pas. Et oui, celles de 7:31 c'est le modèle Agreste de Digoin Sarreguemines. Quelle bonne idée de mettre une assiette plus grande en dessous! Je n'y suis pas souvent allée, mais à chaque fois que je viens ici, ils ont beaucoup d'assiettes avec un liseré doré ou des détails dorés. Des terre de fer par contre je n'y ai jamais trouvé.Et oui les coupes à 6:32 j'aimais bien mais elles étaient trop grandes. Merci pour votre commentaire!

Leuke trip weer! Ik had die pot ook weer meegenomen. Vind ze geweldig, kun je niet genoeg van hebben. En inderdaad soms is het even tijdje speuren, maar ineens zijn ze daar de champagne coupes. Mooie set! Ik noem het altijd, ik ga schatzoeken als ik naar de kringloop ga. Hopelijk gauw weer een keer naar Frankrijk. Maar met een newborn komt dat tzt wel weer :) In tussentijd is het zo digitaal schatzoeken ook leuk en wel zo voordelig en ruimtebesparend ;)
Haha! Ja precies, lekker struinen en doen alsof je er zelf bent en dan kijken wat je zou kopen als... Het vinden is net zo fijn als het bezitten vaak vind je niet? Ik kan het inmiddels makkelijker laten staan en al blij zijn met het feit dat ik het gevonden had! Geniet van de bijzondere tijd met een klein nieuw mensje in huis. Zo bijzonder!

Oh my gosh, I saw some tan/cream colored linens with a red stripe down the front and I would have had to grab them all. So French looking. And there were two gorgeous books with blue mottled covers and what looked like leather bindings that said "French Prints" that I would have had to pick up, too. You are so lucky to have such beautiful books to choose from. Are they expensive? I do love to see what you find on these thrifting trips.
I didn't check the prices on the books, but I am guessing they'd be a few euros each.

I love thrifting,so more the merrier. It would be nice to hear the price especially if you purchase any. Like to see how you style in your home and cottages. Those books were gorgeous. I like to use as home decor and or risers for decor. God’s blessings.
Thank you! The prices are usually not on the items, you have to go to a desk where an employee will determine the price. So I only know for the items that I actually buy and always try not to forget to mention them. In most of the items that were behind the glass, there were price tags, I try to film those if I can.
And about the books: yes I may go back (or to my local Emmaus) and get some. When editing the video I told myself: I should have brought a few home. I use them the same way you do!

A few years back I picked up a beautiful pair of Brogue tan leather mens shoes.
Very different to the mass produced style. I looked up the maker and they make
shoes for customers They are based in London in one of those posh areas.
Anyway they were $12 but that day,all mens shoes were half price,so $6.00
I cleaned them up,took great photos and listed them for $400 and they were
snapped up by a buyer in Switzerland $$$$$$$ So you have a computer in your pocket,always look up every detail on that item. Then go to ebay,enter the item's details, select the used option.then select worldwide option, then finally select the sold option.
This will then give you a rough idea on what that item is selling for.
It's a simple easy way to see if there is a profit to be made or not :)

Agree with you on the quality and charm of older tableware. I have too much of it. Two weeks ago I saw a beautiful antique French porcelain chocolate pot in a U.S. thrift shop. When the man said he only wanted $7 for it, I couldn't resist. I hadn't seen a real antique one for a couple of decades---lots of reproductions out there though.
Can never not buy a treasure find like that! That would almost be a crime :)

@@baydreamer01 I know! I once gave a woman of our village at an estate sale much more than she wanted for Tolix stools. She had no idea what they were (and the factory is only 30 minutes away!) and they had been sitting outdoors in the rain for decades. So I explained but because they weren't in very good condition anymore I still offered an interesting price for me but a much more reasonable one for her. I guess when you're not a lover for the things you and I really like, they are less valuable to you. I personally don't like "real" antiques. Most people see brocante as "a bunch of junk", to me most antique pieces are too overwhelming, detailed and too ugly to put in my house and yet it is so much more "valuable" and sold at completely different price points. We all have our preferences and maybe he had that thing for so long and didn't find a buyer for it? Now he's happy somebody took it home with them! Lucky you!
@@FrenchCountryLife What I mean by "real" antique is a piece that is at least 100 years old. Less than that is vintage. I like everything from rustic to fine.

Yes I know! That generally is the case in most all of the Emmaüs I've ever been to!

I kind of agree. Prices at Emmaüs have increased so much over the past 5 years. Sometimes I see items that feel they're sold for way too much in my personal opinion, but I guess it is indeed just a personal opinion but it is something I noticed.

I have a few questions please, before you moved to France,
did you purchase your home before you moved there or after ?
Can you just buy, move and live in France without any immigration paperwork ? Do you have to prove to the French immigration dept that you can survive on a certain amount of your money monthly ? A 12 month retirement visa has these requirements,so you will not be a burden to the French economy. Thank you absolutely love your videos :)))))
We bought our house as a holiday home in 2018 and spent one week here in the fall and felt we wanted to live here permanently. We are Dutch, so European Union, which means you can move to another country with EU freely if I am right. I kept my Dutch business but I don't know if as a EU citizen you need to do any paperwork for your financial situation (my accountant may have done that, I am sorry I can't say anything about this).
I do know it's different when coming from Australia or the US. I have friends from both countries that have a house here or are looking for one. The French government has this information available in English on their website. Just Google for it and you should find the information. Good luck!
@@FrenchCountryLife Thank you for replying back so quickly 😁 I will have to jump through a few hoops I feel so this is why I am going to try the 12 month Retirement visa. Many European countries are falling over each other to get foreigners in to spend their money and keep villages and the economy alive. They want us to show we can afford to live on around $600-800 a month then it's supposed to easier to get the next 12 months because of the influx from foreign capital 😁 I loved your videos when you went to other towns and told us some history of that town,very fascinating. That doesn't sound like enough to live here, maybe for a single person it may though, I can't really assess, I am raising two teens that is probably very different :) I think you can find really nice properties at a decent price in certain areas of France though compared to what the same amount of money would get you in The Netherlands for example! @@FrenchCountryLife My budget is $50,000 AUD and all ready I've found some absolute beauties. It's just me moving over here,so just a 2 bed room period home in a village is all I want. In Victoria Australia,for $50,000 in a Country town is nigh impossible ! Houses now cost , minimum $600,000 in the suburbs!!! My house in leafy Beaconsfield is on a 700 sq block, 4 bedroom 3 living areas, 24 yrs old is valued now at $950,000 when we bought it in 2011 it was $400,000! Prices have exploded here and the cost of living is staggering ! So I can now retire in France comfortably 😁
@@pwilliams6405 I know, same in The Netherlands! Do take into account that some of those houses may need some serious work. A village house may be connected to sewers, which is a huge plus! As basically every other house in the country would need to have works done on the septic tank (even if it's perfectly functional, it needs to meet code...and this needs to be done when the house gets a new owner according to the law) and make sure the roof is okay. Those are the two things to be absolutely sure about that it's okay, else you're easily looking at at least another 30,000 to make sure the house is ok. If your budget is 50,000, make sure to account for notary fees (about 7-8 percent of the price which comes on top of the price!) and some budget to do some renovations. Many houses here need at least some modernization or a fresh coat of paint, some patching up or the heating needs attention. Many houses are either only heated with a wood burner or in some cases only with electric heaters. If the latter is the case, heating your home will cost a fortune so just a few things to take into account if you want to be comfortable in your house after the purchase.

If you would go more slowly? Some of the filming was so fast it was rather a blur. So many 'treasures '.

I also have always been wondering about the usual concerns on lead content. Do you take this into consideration?
Thank you for asking that question. From the research I have done, dishwares that are porcelain and sandstone are safe because the manufacturing process for those require high temperatures and the melting point for lead is too low so it can't be used. I found this French article to be really informative on this; oerine.com/toxicite-produits-ceramique/
French vintage that is "porcelaine" will usually have that marked at the bottom of the item so you can check for that. Stonewares are easily identified. Studio pottery from France is checked but not as rigorously as industrially manufactured ceramics and in a thrift store where you find vintage and older pieces, they may date back to dates where regulations weren't as strict as they are today. So better be safe.
My personal rules are:
- any items that contain paint (toys, decorative pieces, and especially furniture and doors!!): assume the paint contains lead. You can buy test kits to check if the paint is lead-based.
You can also tell this quite easily by the look of how the paint has chipped. Lead paint really cracks in a specific way (called alligator pattern). Never give these toys and items to children and seal / varnish items that contain lead-based paint. It's the paint dust and chips that are dangerous, if nothing comes off anymore and it is just sitting there being beautiful, there is no real risk. When sanding or up cycling these items, protect yourself! Use a mask (the ones with the filters on each side, so not the normal dust masks!) and protective clothing or wash your clothes afterwards. Make sure no paint dust or chips are inhaled.
- for dishware: if an item is cracked, chipped or damaged do not use it but use it as decoration
Lead also needs time to leach out of the ceramics. Don't store foods in them for a long time, especially acidic foods (vinegar for example).
- for glassware: crystal is made using lead. So yes, it will contain lead. So I would never store wine or whiskey for example in a crystal decanter (I don't store them anyways because I don't really drink alcohol) Keep using crystal glassware for special occasions to stay safe. And again: anything acidic is going allow lead to leach faster.
I am personally more concerned about the paint on items, furniture and doors etc, especially since many brocante lovers love the chipped paint look... It is good to be aware of the potential risks.
But on that same note... I am afraid many people don't realize how many toxic ingredients are in our beauty products (and also in some modern ceramics by the way). We put creams and make-up on our face that are highly dangerous for the same reasons. So all in all, being careful in general and checking for ingredients etc is unfortunately imperative in today's world!
