Shrek was made as an intentional satire of Disney (the opening especially with Shrek using a Disney story to wipe, Fiona as a non traditional princess, pop soundtrack vs original songs, the more adult humor etc) as a kid friendly middle finger from the DreamWorks to Disney CEO who formerly fired them.
The producer or writer (I can't remember which) was fired from Disney, so this was sort of cathartic for him, that's why all of the fairytale creatures are Disney based stories but can't be an infringement of IP due to them being folk tales. And Duloc is a joke about Disney being sterile and soulless
Now that I'm older, the jokes are still funny, but what makes the movie funnier is that it's basically a 90 minute middle finger to Disney. Also, can't wait for the "Shrek 2" reaction.
Not only was this movie a giant middle finger to Disney, it also saved Dreamworks. Dreamworks put their all into Prince of Egypt (good movie but nowhere near Shrek level) because they thought it would be big. They didn't even want to greenlight Shrek until Chris Farley signed on. Unfortunately he passed and Shrek had a major overhaul and story change because Mike Meyers didn't want to "replace" Chris. A running joke was that you got Shreked because you got sent to the Shrek team as punishment. The Shrek movies ended up being Dreamwork's top selling movies (not sure if this still holds true now).
From what I could find all four Shrek movies are their highest grossing movies. I'm actually pretty surprised by that, I know Shrek is beloved but they have some other big money makers too.
Shrek is Scottish, not Irish. Myers Canadian born but to Scottish parents, he lived here in Scotland for a good few years too, which is why he's done a good few characters as Scottish.
Well, it depends on your definition of "Scottish". Shrek has a Scottish accent, but he's from a fictional land where I'm sure there is no Scotland. Myers has done multiple Scottish characters, but this is the only one that isn't expressly Scottish save for his accent.
Movies like Shrek give me what I call 'Net Nostalgia' watching them I'm not just nostalgic for the movie it self but the music and advertising and clothes and video games out around the same time.
Years before Spiderman 2 & the Dark Knight, Shrek 2 was one of the 1st sequels I remember that actually topped the 1st movies. I can't wait to see your reactions!
Some people speculate that Donkey is actually Lampwick, a mischievous kid from Pinocchio's story who was transformed into a donkey, but somehow could still speak. All the other naughty boys from the group just became regular work animals.
That’s quite a stretch seeing as Lampwick was made up by Disney and the original character was Candlewick who turned into a donkey in the original Pinocchio story, and later dies after he’s sold to a farmer and overworked.
@@melindamercier6811the entire movie is about using folk tales that are outside Disney IP to mock Disney movies…. That’s completely consistent with the backstory of the movie

One of my roommates even bought a shrek toy that was the gingerbread man torture scene and when you press the button the ginger bread man sat up and spit water, and it played the muffin man dialogue.😂
Note at the beginning where the people are trading in their magical creatures, there are 3 Bears (mamma bear has a bow in her hair). When it gets to them all at the swamps, now only 2 bears (daddy bear and child) .... and mamma bear now a floor mat bear hide with the bow still in her hair- Mamma Bear is no more

The Magic Mirror's princess presentation is a straight-up parody of the old game show _The Dating Game_ (1965-1973) from the music to the background decor. Contestants would ask a series of questions to three hidden potential partners then pick the one they thought best suited them for an all-expenses-paid date. The line 'That will do donkey' is a reference to the movie Babe, a little pig that was trained to help on a farm. Also you will find all the other Ogers in the third Sherk movie.
One of the interviews I remember from this movie back in the day was with Michael Myers on a day after all the vocal lines had been done they had one line they still needed to get from Michael Myers. The director actually got it from him in the back of a cab. It's the beginning of the speech to all the fairytale creatures in the swamp. A lot of times, the animators will design the characters to look like the actors who voice them. Like when Eartha Kitt did the voice of the witch in the Emporer's New Groove. They were actually able to also get a lot of her movements as well since she really got into the character while voicing her.
