This movie shows far more of the detail and depth of Oz that Baum put into his books, far more than the MGM movie has. Oz is a rich and deeply detailed world on the same level with such places as Middle-Earth and Narnia.
I'm 37 now, watched this film many times when I was a boy. It made me tearful recently by the time it got to this scene, such a magical and beautiful piece of art this film is. Very close to my heart still.
Same. I had no idea Fairuza Balk would grow up and turn into such a gorgeous woman. I'll bet money that she helped start the whole Goth GF thing when she was inThe Craft lol.
Facially yes, Emma Ridley looked a lot like John R. Neill's illustrations. And when Ozma first appeared, she was golden-haired. But from the third book on, her hair darkened. Fairy magic, I reckon! But it was to make a contrast with Dorothy, who is blonde in the books.
The Oz books by L. Frank Baum are the best kept secret in American literature! If you are not familiar with these wonderful books, you have NO idea what you've been missing.
That’s why, as good as this movie is, it was still afraid of this truth. I wonder sometimes if the original sequels are not as popular because a lot of people were put off by Baum’s revolutionary reveal.
@@ManualGynephiliaI don't see it. She was born a girl, grew up thinking she was a boy, and then was restored to her true identity as a girl. That's kind of the opposite of the trans icon narrative...
This movie got so much backlash, because it wasn't like the famous, exalted MGM Wizard of Oz with Judy Garland. I mean, sure, there's no Garland in this, singing, or even Toto... but this movie has so much cinematic aesthetics to offer, and a much more dramatic undertone -- which I'm sure is more connected to the books. I think Ozma represented Death because it is entirely possible she was the ghost of the girl who saved Dorothy. And Dorothy returning home could possibly be her returning to the mortal world rather than remain in the afterlife like Harry in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

I never thought that she was pretty. Just being honest. But, I always thought that Emma was enchantingly beautiful. Perhaps it's a mixture of her looks and the character.

If Tim Burton re-did this film it would be incredible. - Someone ought to tell him.
It would be wretched.
Sadly 13 years later we know that wouldn't be the case :(
It would suck since Alice was terrible. It would probably have a shitty writer.
