Correction: The name Donald Manes is pronounced Mann-iss, not Mayns.
the Kitty Genovese story suggesting no one helps has been proven untrue. Many people actually did call the police. Her younger brother did incredible research and this resulted in a well done documentary
After all my years in hearing that story I did not know that until this day. I first heard the story ~13 years ago in high school Psych, and it was used to discuss the bystander effect (individuals are less likely to help when there are other people around.) As tragic as the event was, I guess there's solace in the fact that there wasn't actually so many people who stood by and did nothing. I see that the documentary (The Witness) came out around 2015, I'll have to give it a watch!
This story is a large contributor to New Yorkers having a reputation of being apathetic.
Hi Tom ! Most people forget that NYC passed a law requiring lighted entrances after the Kitty Genovese incident.
Eric is the man; great camera work and witty retorts on the fly!
Eric is Ed McMahon, to Mike's Johnny Carson...
and horrible cinematic preferences
He and Tom make a great pair! I think Tom should always keep Eric, as his long-term camera-man! :)
Tom, it’s pronounced “Man-es”. Glad to see you stopped by Neir’s Tavern. Can’t wait to see that video.
Came here to say this about the pronunciation of Donald Manes. It's not MAYnes. It's MAN‐ess.
Love your channel! FYI Donald Manes last name is pronounced "Man-ess" not "Mains". I was scolded once by a New York State senator from that area by pronouncing it like you did in this video. Sharing the knowledge so you do not get rebuked by someone! Thank you for the very interesting channel. I learn a lot from you.
Tom & Eric are the dream team! Another amazing video!!!
best team since Tim & Eric!
Nice, please do a video about gangster rappers in queens, and places they hangout. Thanks 😊
Shocked by the lack of a Seinfeld finale reference when discussing the bystander effect. 😂 Great video as usual.
Tom, you are the coolest guy in all of NYC.
Great video and content. Grew up in Queens and lived in Kew Gardens. I was hoping you would include the Alice Crimmins case. A mother who was accused of killing her 2 kids in Kew Garden Hills in 1965 after she claimed her kids went missing. They found the bodies of the children but could not tie anyone directly to the murder. She's eventually convicted a few years later and after several more years of appeals was sentenced in 1973 and eventually paroled in 1977. It became a media sensation. She is still alive and living somewhere in Florida.
I'm sure most of y'all don't care but that Flushings Meadows Park is also a world famous skate spot,... Well when the fountain is drained...
Ice skaters
Your videos are really entertaining and informative. I consider myself a history buff but i feel that you’re videos really are for everyone. Kudos brother
My late Marine dad was born in the Bronx, lived a lot in Queens. We went to Flushing Meadow several times, rode the paddle boats, saw the Mets play. The globe was always cool.
Great video!!! Give us an occasional live stream. Please!!!
I grew up in Queens Villages a few blocks away from Ruth Schneider ! Was a beautiful neighborhood and still is. Had the best public school education one could only hope for♥️
Tom as a young black man who's relatively new to New York City I love love love every single last one of your videos but you failed to mention the dark history of the bombing of Malcolm X's house in Elmhurst Queens New York City the Nation of Islam and perhaps the FBI bombed with his whole family in it either way great video
This is a great comment bro . Blessings
True
Enjoyed the video. But me being a queens native Born and raised Felt that you sold yourself short or sold queens short on this video. Either way I grew up in and around all three of those areas. That movie theater on Lefferts and Austin used to be a porno theater also it would’ve been nice if you would’ve ventured out to ozone Park where the Gambino family would hang out at The Bergin Hunt and Fish Club. Would’ve also been nice to mention that Queens has more cemeteries than anywhere else in the country. The amount of dead people buried in queens is roughly the population to the city of Chicago A whopping 5,000,000+ people buried in our borough. I would hate to be in Queens during a zombie apocalypse.
Another great video! Thank you, Tom and Eric.
🎭🎭🎭🎭🗡️🗡️🗡️🚮🚮🥺🌐🌐🌐🌐🌉🌉🌉🏹🏹🎲 yeah I went to that '64 world's fair when I was 13, from Massachusetts. Remember it well
Great tour. Cheers Tom
When i saw the title i knew you will discuss KG. living in queens i grew up hearing this
Thank you for this video
Let's all pitch in and get Tom a new jacket
Eric awesome cameraman! Tom awesome video and sick plugs
Ahh! You were right across the street from my apartment on Queens Blvd. Such a fan of your channel!
"Double Indemnity" not a good film, but a GREAT film. Screenplay by Billy Wilder and Raymond Chandler. A must for anyone into film noir! Enough said.
The sequel Triple Indemnity wasn't too bad either
Tom, dude... you are GREAT! Thanks for all your vids. I was a Tour Guide in NYC 1988-1991. Born in L.I.C. = Im a project baby. I would really luv if you could do a documentary on housing projects in Queens. :0) The history of Public housing. Thanks for doing a great job.
“The Bystander effect” happens to this day where people witness violence and just walk on by or don’t even intervene. Shame on those people! Or people pull out their phones and just film
Filming is good but calling for help might save a life. I never could understand the "bystander mentality" it's unconscionable!
@@dissidentfairy4264 it’s good if you intervene but if you just film for views and likes that’s what’s wrong
@@dissidentfairy4264 like the George Floyd incident that was good.
@@sanjin9665 Yes, filming is very useful for evidence. All I am saying is call for help first.
@@dissidentfairy4264 Agree 100% - put yourself in the Victims-position and How would you feel?
Excellent video as always 😊😊😊
Eric Adams bit: absolute gold / bravo
The NYC Panorama in the museum is awesome--do a video on it!
56K plus subscribers!!! Way to go, Tom!
The dynamic duo is back. Keep them coming fellas.
Loved the part when you mentioned Queens being the best borough in NYC 🥰 you're right! Very cool vid, new sub here for sure
@@chuckscott4661 I don't even smoke. Facts are facts b. I dunno what to *say to you 🤷♀️
@@chuckscott4661 hey mister, there's no competition. What were you going to say? Staten Island perhaps? No judgement lol
@@chuckscott4661 uh
Great tour, enjoyed
"disco biscuits" = equally true. Great research Tomdnyc.
This is the first I've ever heard of a "disco biscuit." Lol
I remember hearing about Kitty, and how no one would come to her aid. Sadly, it appears humans are still pretty much like that; they probably have been for all of history.
Love you Tom and Eric .
I liked this video the moment you brought up the new Matrix sequel! Well placed!
It's not Donald Mains, it's pronounce Man-ess. I was his nurse in the ICU after he tried to commit suicide. To say he was messed up is an understatement.
Tom, you are talented and genius. Keep up😊
I’m lovin ur videos over here in England ! I thought maybe in the Queens video there would be some wise guy stories? Hey maybe you should!
Great one!!! More dark NYC! 😆
Love these videos Tom!
Geez, there are some HORRIBLE people in this world!!! I have never understood how people can stand by as someone is being hurt in any way! I've almost gotten into fights stepping in and helping people, (and animals) that are being abused in public. Tom, favorite part of these dark videos is you popping into and out of frame with that mischievous look on your face. 😯😂
Another fantastic video.
This has to be one of the very bestest channels a human being could watch on UA-cam. There’s a lot of garbage out there but this is all gravy.
He'll never let Eric live down that movie recommendation
I was thinking the same thing man. Haha
i’m just grateful New Zealand isn’t missing off that globe at the start of the video 🇳🇿 Aotearoa Proud!!!
You are so funny, effortlessly, it’s awesome. Love all your videos ❤️
Hey Tom! What's up?Another cool tour !!! You awesome!!!
Since your doing dark side videos, you definitely look like Charlie Manson. Has anyone else noticed that. I'm telling, this guys a dead ringer. Great video btw
HOW AM I JUST DISCOVERING THIS CHANNEL
Thanks Tom for another interesting video. Debbie & Patrick in New Zealand
Would have been nice to include the mysterious and tragic story of Alice Crimmons and the kidnap and death of her two children.
Another great vid but note he pronounced his name MAN-iss
may we have an Eric cameo sometime?....Great stuff as always..
Caddyshack bits: "hey, you musta been something, before electricity!" "Hey, but I've never seen the dead dance before"
20:00 LOLOLOL. "Ugh.. little specific."
Man none of these videos about Queens mention the northeast section (College Point, Malba, Whitestone, Flushing, Broadway-Flushing, East Flushing, Murray Hill, Beechhurst, Auburndale, Fresh Meadows, Bayside, Bay Terrace, Clearview, Utopia, Pomonk, Douglaston, Little Neck, Oakland Gardens, Glen Oaks)
Those areas you mentioned aren’t dark at all. Lol
@@roldiajoseph2730 I'm talking about in general
She was supposed to be inside the bldg. Pleading for help door to door. THIS Story Scared me to DEATH. It's AMAZING How HISTORY GETS CHANGED. 😒 WHAT'S THAT???EFFECT???
CALLED❓ 😑
"Epic fail for the psychiatrist"...that was a great line! 😂
You didn't do the Son of Sam in Forest Hills.
I liked the new Matrix sequel. Eric is a man of culture.
Hey Tom I followed up and found out were the murderer Winston Mosley lived in South Ozone Park 133 st.
you should show them how slow the subways are especially in Queens
Hi Tom ur the coolest guy on you tube ♥️
You could ask Ken and post his tour videos with you on this channel?
Man I love queens born and raised 💯💯💯
Flushing Meadow was my back yard growing up. Israel became a Nation in Flushing Meadow in 1948
Now this is the way to start my weekend with Tom's handsome face and watching one of his videos...one of my favourite channels.
Who's Tim? lol
@@dissidentfairy4264 bloody touchscreen phones 😒🙄😆😆😆
@@AGentlemansJourney77 Touchy phones should be outlawed. lol
You would think Motorboating would have kept her🤣🤣
I just read that the day after the episode of Girls that referenced the Genovese murder aired on HBO, Winston died in jail. Crazy coincidence
OMG... LUDES! LOL! Love your show. Xxx Ooo III
Flushing meadow park was a beautiful park to go in the 80’s , now it a shit show very sad.
New Subscriber
Hat’s of to you guy’s
I really enjoyed the video and everything
To the next video I go I want to watch more
My buddy's son did the union plumping on that flushing unisphere ! And lights up fiber optics ! Trying to cleanup NYC !Then I wonder how Mayor Dinkins got through his tenure ? Saw panorama in 6th grade 1973 ! BAYVILLE NY
Disco Biscuits “cool”😅
I wonder how much The Daily News paid that photographer for that photo of the first execution. That photo had to be worth alot of $$$..
Was Kitty Genevese related to the Genevese Crime family?
I don't believe any relation whatsoever. I think Tom said she grew up outside of NY, in any case. There also used to be Genovese Drugs all over NY in the 70s to 90s
but they weren't related, either.
Did you guys know that there is a time capusle in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, its called the Westinghouse Time Capsules. Buried in 1938 and 1965 Its set to open 5000 years or until the year 6939. 😀
I thought you were going to show us cypress hills, Jamaica, wood heaven, Roosevelt Ave especially the junction by National Avenue and the worst McDonald’s I’ve ever been in.
Came for the fart noises, stayed for the content
I used to have that Phil Ochs record.
Love this kind of history !
That mention of film noir being better than the matrix sequel… freaking hilarious!! I fell asleep trying to watch the very last matrix movie made, like four times!! I STILL haven’t watched it in it’s entirety. Terrible movie!! 😂😂
My FIL is from Floraal Park. I'm sending him this video.
Another great trip to the dark side Tom. Thanks.
Really enjoy your posts. You are a deeply weird and charismatic guy. How about a post about you? What's your story dude?
what's up with the sound effects..... hilarious
Thanks for the tour👹👿👺☠️it was pretty dark for me😉 but interesting 🤔
Tom, when you doing another live?
The priest in the mass scene in Boondock Saints talks about Kitty's murder too.
New camera? Video looks crispy 👍🏾
Now I Know how America emergency 911 service started and love it very informative
I like these NYC Dark Sides stories
0:01 marone. Dissa Tom looka like Francisco Goya 's "Babilicon" (Simpleton) print.
Dark Side of Queens? Tom's standing on it. Corona Park* where the World's Fairs were built on ashes. The Valley of Ashes (Not Willets Point of the 'Great Gatsby'). Corona, the epicenter in the U.S. of the Corona Virus.
* Flushing Meadows-Corona Park
Cool thank u Tom! Luv your personality
can you do a vid about ponytail jane doe in flushing
Is this guy serious that there’s a night club in NYC called Zero bail ? and the no good mayor hangs out there , I totally wouldn’t doubt it.
Donald Ma-nes. His brother owned the car dealership and flushing. I think we Bayside.
Mike is Awesome. 💯👍💯👍💯👍
