If anyone actually complained about the Lies episodes being too long, they need to take a chill pill. I'd sit here for like 4 hours and listen to james talk about this stuff.
Willie Gross Yeah, seriously James, don't ever worry if its going too long. I was actually looking forward to this episode most of this week to be honest :D
It saddens me that james keeps saying ''last time was too long, i promise ill be done soon'', ''dont worry this wont take too long'' and stuff like that. James. Speak. We listen. Dont make it short, make it as long as you can, say everything you want to say. We dont want you to cut things you want to say, we want you to say anything you think is interesting. A big thank you to extra credits for making these series, this is amazing.
+riquelme376 Animations editing they have to pay their crew so the people that work on Extra History gets money The only way they'll make it longer is if they get much more views so they make more money!!!
Wow. Belisarius was paranoid about being betrayed, but he solved that by rearranging and carefully organizing his forces rather than starting witchhunts? I like him even more now. I am tickled that "Where's Walpole" will apparently be a thing now.
Another fun thing about the Hagia Sophia, there are Viking Runes in it. In the 10th century, various Nordic and other northern Europeans (including Russians and Saxons) were hired to be part of the Varangian Guard in Constantinople. They brought their norse culture and language to the Byzantine Empire. Both are pretty faded and hard to read, but the name "Halfdan" is legible. So, we likely are seeing a thousand year old instance of someone writing "Halfdan was here."
They didn't even get into the Bucellerii. Those guys are half the reason Belisaurius was such a good general and the Bucellerii only exist because Belisaurius paid for everything out of his own pocket.
Belisarius is over-rated, tbh. Narses was a superior general. Belisarius disobeyed Justinian's orders and turned Italy into a quagmire with his bad faith towards the Ostrogoths. Narses had to clean up his mess.
Something else that also really shows Justinian's ambition: Apparently, when he first stepped inside the finished Hagia Sophia, he was heard to say "Solomon, I have surpassed you"

Finn Boyle Oh they actually managed to hold on to Rome for a suprisingly long time, for a few centuries actually. They lost hold of it in the 8th century (200 years after Justinian) after some religious controversy about iconoclasm with the pope (putting it mildly) and 2 centuries of deep tension. These tensions were either religious in nature or were related to the emperors being massive jerks, such as when Constans II visited Rome solely to loot it of all wealth and treasure (even stripping the bronze off the roof of the Pantheon which was then a church). Despite losing Rome, the Empire still had nominal claims to the territory until Charlemagne was crowned Holy Roman Emperor by the pope in 800 A.D, which severed Romes connections with the empire permanently.
marvelfannumber1 Thanks, but I'm still a bit confused. When Rome became independent of the ERE/BE, was it because of religious rioters and the Pope declaring independence, or where they let go, or some other reason?
Finn Boyle It's a bit complicated. It started with the iconocastic controversy which was a very convoluted religious controversy about wether Christians should use images or not (I.e whether they should have the same opinion of religious art as Islam). The Pope absolutely refused to have anything to do with these people who vandalized churches and burned images and held a council about excommunicating them. The Emperor responded by confiscating large Papal estates in Italy and giving them over to the patriarch. At the same time the Lombards (a tribe who had been harassing Italy since Justinians reconquest razed the countryside of Rome and somehow managed to get the ERE on it's side. The Pope realized new protectors were needed and went to the King of the Franks to help him out which eventually led to the destruction of the Lombards and the aforementioned coronation of Charlemagne. Yeah, as said very confusing and convoluted, but I hope you understand now.
Seriously you guys aren't going to cover the second half of Justinian reign? Without the second part the whole thing seems like a giant success story. In fact Justinian's reign loses meaning without the second half and the disasters that came afterwards. Come one guys do the second half! Especially since your going to do the first Crusade, people are going to be confused how the Byzantines got to the state they were in.
Alexander Kamensky They skip around in history all the time. This isn't some continiuous story. They just happened to pick a story that takes place somewhat after the previous one. They may return to Justinian's reign later, as he said in the video.
Alexander Kamensky They want to cover the second half, but they want to keep these series short. If you want to see the rest of the story, get on Patreon and vote!
Alexander Kamensky As icedragon769 said, they already mentioned they want to cover the second half. But the Byzantine Empire is a grand story and, sometimes, you want to break up a huge story just to give the viewers some time to digest it before going onward.
These "Lies" episodes are some of my favorites. I really appreciate it when you put yourselves out there and go back and fix your mistakes. I also appreciate that you believe in what you are doing so much that you come out in person to do it. Thanks for a great series!
I was never a big fan of history when it came to school, but I love the way you guys tell it, and I have to say that one of my favorite parts is seeing James geek out over the little details you had to leave out.
I could listen to Justin talk all day long, filling my brain with all kinds of information, anecdotes and trivia. I also dig that he's human enough to realize he makes mistakes and humble enough to work on correcting them when he can. Then again, no one on the EC team is a slouch, and all do their part incredibly well. Thank you to all.
Don't ever apologize!! Love the "rambles", lol. I don't consider it as such. You're always very informative & extremely enjoyable to watch!! Love the Byzantine series; Please keep it going!!! Much respect from Texas
One thing that I enjoy most about this section is your enthusiasm, I know it's silly but it makes a whole lot difference to the listeners. It shows how much passionate you are about history. PS I love this channel because I love history and you guys write it so thoroughly and make it fun to watch. Keep up to good work!
I thought the most amusing thing about Extra history, was playing Civilization 5, and running into some of these great generals like Belisarius and going. "Hey! I know that name! I learned about this guy on Extra History!"
I know it’s a little late but: “THE menorah” wasn’t a menorah. It was an oil lamp (like in Aladdin). The menorah was invented to commemorate the event. The menorah that Titus brought back to Rome may have been the one from The Temple, but it wasn’t The Menorah.
Plz continue this series at some point, Belisarius went from one of the generals i knew the least about to one of my favorites through this series. PLLLLLLLLLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ CONTINUEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please don't apologize for running your videos long, we simply cannot get enough of the way you guys (and gals!) present to us historical topics that simply aren't capable of being covered in standard history school courses. Great stuff, keep it up!
Well, Extra History is my favorite series now. It's incredible how you portrait all these details and make them a story that would enchant people who normally hates history (I'm not one of them, I'm a recognized history nerd, eh). The "Lies" videos shows your commitment with your work, and how you accept your mistakes and decide to make something greater with them. Congratulations, you have earned my heart. I would love to have a conversation with James, for hours and hours... Oh well, I'll have to play CK2.Time to rebuild Justinian's Empire! Greetings from Chile!
+kibordpengin Bwahaahaha. I just noticed this too! I was doing this at like 3 AM before flying out to Khan Academy and didn't even get to watch it before shooting it off to Dan. Good looking out. Someday we will have the Lies-ception. -JP P.S. Wasn't me, it was Walpole.
when it comes to these "lies" episodes take as much time as you like. seriously it's really interesting to discuss these less talked about characters in history
This series was awesome. As someone who isn't that interested in history i found this fascinating and will definitely support you in continuing this tale.
James says the "Lies" videos are going on for too long, but I would love it if there was a whole series about James talking about this stuff. I could listen to all of his Walpole facts, and all of his Belisarius facts.
Man, it's awesome how passionate you are about this. I've never considered myself to be very interested in history but I love this series and all your history videos.
Loved this series and this episode in particular. Belisarius is one of my favorite historical figures as well and it's awesome to hear someone talk about him who really appreciates him the same way.
But wait... if i understand correctly, the part where the Hagia Sophia accidentaly has minerets, was suposed to show how the church burnt down during the Nika riots... but the church that burnt down was nothing like the Hagia Sophia that stands today, it was built during the reign of Theodosius II to replace yet another church that had been burt down due to a riot! I am super glad this trend didnt repeat itself! also your enthusiasm is amazing and addictive :P I've only just discovered this fantastic channel and i'm working my way through the "Extra History: Cronological order" playlists, so as of yet, this whole Wallpole thing really confuses me! xD
Thank you guys for making such great videos! I really enjoy chilling out and listening to the stories. Your excitement about history is even more evident in these correction videos :)
***** The EC comments are normally civil, so hopefully it will be like that. (Even though yeah, as a Catholic person myself I am slightly frightful that people will bash it. But hey, it'll probably be nowhere as bad as some other places.)

You guys have convinced me to stay the course and learn programming. I have a great idea for a future system and you guys give me hope I can do it. Not to mention all the riveting history and stories I learn here. Thanks so much for this channel. Talk rock.
I love the extra history series but this one was really special to me. As it was ongoing I was living in Istanbul, so it was really wonderful to hear about the history of some of the places talked about the story of Justinian and Theodora whilst physically seeing them! :)
Though I LOVE the Extra History series, I actually love the "lies" series more. You admit to your misstates / mistranslations. That Is a truly rare thing. You all are doing great, simply keep up your work!
"Walpole in two!" Ahahaha, I love this fixation. I've never heard of Walpole before and now I know he's going to be a fascinating figure for me from now on from your interest in him. I watched the Admiral Yi piece first, and fell in love with this series and am enjoying going through all you've done so far. My thanks to you guys for making these awesome videos, and all those who have supported you doing it! Once I get my next job lined up, I'll be celebrating on Patreon myself! :-)
Thank You for this. Very good series, You speak with much enthusiasm and it's visible You love it. That's what makes it more fun to watch. Best regards from Croatia!
After watching this series and seeing how interesting this history is and hearing how much was left out I feel like there needs to be a tv drama series recreating the events of this time period. If done well it could be as good as something like Game of Thrones.
I get a chuckle when people talk about Church history and use the dating suffix CE for the date, made especially humorous because the date itself is still based on the birth of the one they are trying to ignore.
Every time they start a new chapter of this series, I think to myself, Im not really interested in this topic, I'll just watch the first episode to see what the credits music is like. And every damn time, I end up sitting, with rapt attention, at the end of the Lies episode, wishing they'd continue this chapter further. This is an amazing series, and I've learned a lot. Thanks, EC team. But seriously... more of everything please. :D
That note that Belsarious wrote... thank goodness for the translation, I actually understood it. (the previous notes James have read have been to "fluffy to understand) but that note was fun to hear.
I don't think you guys should worry so much about making longer episodes. I sure as hell don't mind listening to James go off on a few tangents and discuss the topic in greater depth.
I can understand why people would complain about a 20 minute extra history because it has a lot of information to process which works for the bitesized format it is now, but is already pushing the limits. Lies, however, has a lower information density because everything has to get referenced first. It also consists of multiple sections and is talked by a huge enthousiast. I love to listen to people who love talking about what they like. The passion behind it. I could listen for hours. Personally, I think Lies episodes should just be as long as fits to fill in the cracks or allow you to tell everything you want to tell, be it in 10 minutes or even 40 minutes. If it's too long, we can always get back since youtube now saves where we clicked away from the video. If people don't want this extra information, then they should just be content with the series. Then Lies is just not for them and they should click away.
Draidis Spoiler alert: The story ends on a real depressing note with the empire at war with all its neighbours, losing most of Italy to a new barbarian people and a plague that wipes out nearly half the world's population. Theodora dies, and Justinian's left a broken man.
It took six years to rebuild our local library. The I-405 and I-605 junction in Seal Beach, CA had construction started six years ago and they're still not finished. (In all seriousness though, the Hagia Sophia had tons of dedicated people and the support of the government, I'd bet, whereas this library and this highway junction were both caught under red tape and lawsuits from angry residents.) Our European history classes considered the Byzantine Empire a shadow of the Roman Empire and always called it the Byzantine Empire. They also called it pathetic. Every single one of them. I learned about leaving soldiers behind with each location you reach playing Risk. I lost because I had thinned out my troops too much.
You should just make 'Where's Walpole' an Extra history easter egg for each series. Then use the 'lies' video to tell people. I absolutely loved this series, so far and so hope for it to continue later on too. It's so intriguing that it should be pitched to the History Channel as a tv series like Vikings.
Pesett Peau its an RPG game. It has a lot of good history material so it makes it relatively easier to run historical games in many eras. It stands for Generic Universal Role-Playing System. (sorry its a bit of a side note).
I love these series -- so do whatever you want. I'll watch it. But one day I would love to see an Extra History series on the Thirty Years' War. So, so important. And relatively unknown today.
It would be really interesting to see a series on the American Civil War some time. There are a ton of interesting historical figures to examine, and it's a very topical period of history as well.
If anyone actually complained about the Lies episodes being too long, they need to take a chill pill. I'd sit here for like 4 hours and listen to james talk about this stuff.
i know right? he keeps saying he doesnt wanna go over an stuff by im just like "theres no such thing as too much extra history"

MysteryMachineX Something like "Mistakes" would be much better.
Sawed Off Laser Lies sounds better.
Tyler Leoppky This!!!!
It is an amazing idea!
Sawed Off Laser Well, some of the mistakes in Extra History seem intentional, and intentional mistakes are lies.
Something else that also really shows Justinian's ambition: Apparently, when he first stepped inside the finished Hagia Sophia, he was heard to say "Solomon, I have surpassed you"
HE A NOOB
"But instead... we dub him the last man to dream."

Come back next week when Extra History begins a new series on the First Crusade!
Extra Credits I'm curious, how did the ERE/BE lose Rome afterwards? Was it lost during Justinian's reign or afterwards?
Finn Boyle
Oh they actually managed to hold on to Rome for a suprisingly long time, for a few centuries actually.
Extra Credits You're doing the First Crusade? Well, I have something to say about that: Deus vult!
Finn Boyle
It's a bit complicated.
I loved this series. So many little things i didn't know about this era. Belisarious sounds like such a badass.
I could listen to this for hours. New to this channel and I love it all. I will definitely become a patron!
You guys are doing a way better job than the "history" channels has been doing.
As far as I'm concerned you could've just nerded out about history for an hour and I'd have watched and listened.
You don't need to worry about going on for too long, I barely notice the time going by the "lies" episodes are very interesting.
Thank You for this. Very good series, You speak with much enthusiasm and it's visible You love it. That's what makes it more fun to watch.
Best regards from Croatia!
Oh man I can't wait for the Crusade episodes to start. I hope you won't have to rush anything, especially the siege of Ma'arra.
It would be great if Walpole became a running gag. The potential for it is too great to pass up.
Belisarius bears striking resemblance to Mat from The Wheel of Time.
That note that Belsarious wrote... thank goodness for the translation, I actually understood it. (the previous notes James have read have been to "fluffy to understand) but that note was fun to hear.
I love the FFXI ost being played in the background! Fits the feel of the 'Lies' portion of Extra History. Keep it up guys! I love your content
hes one of my favorite historical figures! Please do more! Particularly elaborate upon the Plague of justinian!
I don't think you guys should worry so much about making longer episodes. I sure as hell don't mind listening to James go off on a few tangents and discuss the topic in greater depth.
Can't wait for the Crusade series! Good thing it comes out tomorrow!
Ted's really brushed up on his history since high school.
Count this as a vote to finish Justinian & Theodora! Thumbs up this comment to add your vote!
Draidis You have to donate on Patreon for your vote to mean anything.
TrolldaMeir This is the poor man's vote
Draidis Spoiler alert: The story ends on a real depressing note with the empire at war with all its neighbours, losing most of Italy to a new barbarian people and a plague that wipes out nearly half the world's population. Theodora dies, and Justinian's left a broken man.
I got chills at the next topic. This is going to be good
I'm loving this series. Can't wait for the first crusade.
I know some people prefer online content to be short, but James, if you did an hour-long "lies" episode, I would not complain at all.
It took six years to rebuild our local library. The I-405 and I-605 junction in Seal Beach, CA had construction started six years ago and they're still not finished. (In all seriousness though, the Hagia Sophia had tons of dedicated people and the support of the government, I'd bet, whereas this library and this highway junction were both caught under red tape and lawsuits from angry residents.)
Our European history classes considered the Byzantine Empire a shadow of the Roman Empire and always called it the Byzantine Empire. They also called it pathetic. Every single one of them.
I learned about leaving soldiers behind with each location you reach playing Risk. I lost because I had thinned out my troops too much.
Cant wait for the I crusade! Anyone joining the hype train with me?!
Chu CHU
I like trains.
*Chugging intensifies'
Ingsord chuga, chuga, chuga, DUES VOLT!
NO, LONG LIVE ALLA!! cue flame war...
Yeah! I love it if they make crusades!
Does he have a twitch where he just talks about his knowledge on history? I would watch that
You should just make 'Where's Walpole' an Extra history easter egg for each series. Then use the 'lies' video to tell people. I absolutely loved this series, so far and so hope for it to continue later on too. It's so intriguing that it should be pitched to the History Channel as a tv series like Vikings.
oh man i love the crusade period it I was obsessed with it when i was younger and i hope you guys end up continuing this
Your tackling the first crusade next! This is awesome! I've been running a GURPS campaign about the First Crusade since 2013. My players will love it.
GURPS!!! Have this imaginary internet trophy on me
Pardon me but what is GURPS?
Pesett Peau its an RPG game. It has a lot of good history material so it makes it relatively easier to run historical games in many eras. It stands for Generic Universal Role-Playing System. (sorry its a bit of a side note).
dudes please do more of the byzantine series!
I love these series -- so do whatever you want. I'll watch it. But one day I would love to see an Extra History series on the Thirty Years' War. So, so important. And relatively unknown today.
Oh, wow, Suleiman is one of the lawmakers honored in the House of Representatives. Interesting, I recognize more of them than I thought I would.
It would be really interesting to see a series on the American Civil War some time. There are a ton of interesting historical figures to examine, and it's a very topical period of history as well.
Could you guys make a 'It Was Walpole!' poster? I would be more than happy to plunk down money for that. I'd hanging it in my office!
This one was so good. Thanks again.
