I would never have listened to Petrassi without your recommendation. I was expecting dense contrapuntal singing, but I was not expecting the sheer gorgeousness of the work. Obviously, it is hard to get to grips with a piece on a first hearing. The orchestration is stunning, and the soprano does an incredible job of maintaining a beautiful tone in such difficult music. I sometimes hear echoes of the Gothic Symphony. At any rate, the Magnificat is a major discovery. Thank you for the recommendation!
