Thank you for this, and I'm good up until 06:33 when you go into network and dsm settings. I don't seem to have a dsm settings tab? Did something change with DSM 7 please
Edit: Found it. Now in Control Panel > Login Portal. Might be worth a sticky comment that lets people know. Thank you.
"DDNS, which stands for......*blanks out*.......somethin." LMFAO I laughed so hard hahahah im sorry, amazing tutorial! Thanks for this! Ive literally learned soooo much about Synology watching your channel, I got my whole business running on a Synology NAS now
That's a nice intro today... more engaging and personal than the hype train intro's I've been smashed with on some other channels haha.
Appreciate the tutorial. There's a serious lack of Synology-related tutorials for beginners. Would you consider perhaps making a tutorial about Dockers and torrent client/radarr/jackett containers? It took me a whole week to figure it out but it would definitely be amazing.
Thats why I started doing this! Been working my way through Docker containers meant to make a video for a while!
@@SpaceRexWill Agreed with Alan! Thanks for the help with these tutorials. Would love a torrent client/radarr/sonarr container video with a VPN set up if you can !
Great Content! I am setting up my first NAS with your videos here. Very helpful so thank you! And no guessing, I'm subscribed! =]
Awesome! well I am glad to help!
Thank you for this and all your other videos. I'm moving from completely incompetent to just mostly incompetent. :-) Much appreciated.
@SpaceRex Thank you for all of your videos. I am new to the NAS world and I am learning quite a bit. In terms of security, I know keeping router ports closes is a sure way to keep my system safe. My use of DS220+ is only to sync photos from several smart devices in my home between these devices and the NAS. In order for IOS apps to work (photos app), will I need to have quick connect or DDNS set up for it to work? Thank You!
I would have thrown this NAS in the ocean if it weren't for these videos.. thank you!
lolol
Perfect - no muss, no fuss, just straight to the point
Super clear. Thanks so much.
Another top video, well presented and explained. Many thanks! 😎
A trick: watch series on flixzone. Been using them for watching all kinds of movies during the lockdown.
@Krew Anakin yea, been watching on flixzone} for years myself =)
@Krew Anakin Yup, I've been watching on flixzone} for years myself :D
What is top about this video? By introducing two ways how you and others can access your NAS without mentioning security? Hope you aint using either way to remote connect to your nas. the only secure way is to connect through vpn via router or not connect at all.
Explained perfectly, I got it working. I previously watched 2 videos from other people which were incomplete, this was the best one.
Glad it helped!
I cannot enable quick connect on my NAS. I can only enable it when it is connected to my router, but as soon as I connect it to my switch, it won’t let me log into my account on DSM. Any help?
Hey i got stuck at the last part it said : no UPnP router was found. please click next to proceed to manual installation. What should i do?
Hi, many thanks for the detailed video. I am having a problem with my router that is not UPnP and although I have created on the synology NAS the 5000/5001 the test is failed! What do I have to do on the router now??? BR
quickconnect = UDP Hole Punch, not all networks will work on this connection specially if the end/client device is on a cellular network.
proper port forwarding = you need todo some port forwarding and ddns setting, this will always work on any type of networks for as long as you have internet connection. as you see in this video, the port forwarding is not done on the router it self, the reason is the router his using is having UPnP enabled, which is by default is insecure, most routers now a days (specially for router-modem combo that is provided by ISP) have this option disabled by defaults so you might need to dig to your router's manual how to enable it. or you can just port forward it on your own which is recommended.
I have found quick connect to work 100% of the times that I have needed to use it
I dont see this page on 6.38. Missing last "DMS settings"
I have a Ubiquiti Dream Machine router. It did not pass the test during router setup. Advice?
Hi. When I click on "Router configuration' I receive a message: 'Your gateway setting is invalid'. My default gateway is configured via VPN. I assume this may be the issue. Do you know what could be wrong? Thanks!
Great tutorial,
It works perfectly.
But can you tell me why the adres only works when you add “: port number”?
Great tutorials
@spacerex great tutorial, I also have the same question. This only works when adding :port after the address, otherwise throws an error
I am no longer able to connect to DSM, can I reset to factory settings on the NAS with loosing all my photos.
Thank you Sir.
I do not see Netork -> DSM Settings tab in my DS720+ NAS. I see Connectivity tab instead
When I get to the router configuration part in your tutorial, I get the message < Warning: Two or more routers were found in your network. Please consult your ISP to set the modem/router to bridge mode, or try setting your router to bridge mode.
I have both a router asus rt-ac88u and motorola MB8611 modem, don't understand what it is asking, seems it is seeing 2 routers on the network.
Hi Twodose Legend...getting exactly the same on my EE router, did you ever work it out? Great to know how if you did
@@csm66 Sorry no i didn't.
How do you use a custom domain to port forward to your synology nas ?
Thanks for the video
Love your videos. Have you updated this under DSM 7 yet? My suggestion, discuss the pros and cons more fully between Quickconnect and Synology DDNS. I am struggling with the speed of access to their photostation/photos apps and wondering idf what you mention in this video regarding the quickconnect/DDNS access would also affect this. Also Synology has a bunch of DDNS options listed now, so maybe mention if the one we select is of any relevance or effect or if simply to aid us remembering. Lastly, if we opt for these, should we start looking at firewall rules? This could be a topic for a whole video actually. The risk of being hacked now is so scary.
i had quick connect...it stopped working when i moved... now its all greyed out and all i can do is unlink...ddns vs quick connect... u had said one was safe and one was not...which one was it?? router config has never worked... it has a short list of supported routers and mine isnt on it
Great Things
Great stuff. Thank you. Any tips as to how I can do this for a second Synology also on my network? You mention that you have one but with different port numbers
Yeah! On your router just set up port forwarding with with a different unused port to the second synology. Then change DSM (or whatever service) to the new port
I followed these instructions, but when it got to the part of detecting my router information it couldn't and wanted me to do this manually. Couldn't do it and so put my settings back to what they where before and deleted the DDSM. Problem is now, every time I try and login through QuickConnect I get a warning that says my connection is not secure.
This didn't happen before and no matter I do I can't seem to get the connection to be secure again. Does anyone know how I can fix this please?
Hi
please can you help us and expint it agine after synology update all the apps
Thank you
Thanks man. Can you explain what I'd need to do with DDS and the ports if I'm trying to backup two different NASs onto a remote backup server?
At the end he says "type in this host name". What hostname? I went through all of this and now I don't know what to do. Please help.
Thanks PaceRex but in the latest of dsm 7.1 where can I find changing port?!
Is there an update to this for the latest DSM? I followed the video the best i could and yet I still get an unsecure connection.
Can you tell me how you did to have only 192.168.1.123 without port: 4001?
Thanks first for your clean presentations. I have a question. Can a Synology device be accessed remotely (from a different network) in case my internet connection ip address is not real (not public)? My WD cloud device has a "relay connection" option for remote access that provides me other network connection. This is useful because my university internet doesn't provide me public ip. Please answer. Thanks.
What happens when your router fails the test, how to set this up manually?
Hi, Great video but could you please do one on waking the NAS drive from a remote location? The UA-cam video's so show a way to use Networking Tools to wake up a NAS drive, but I can not find this package anywhere, so it there another way?
Great video! But does the DDNS url serve as a way to connect to the NAS via Finder on Mac?
Curious about this! @spacerexwill ?
Hi, do you ever face to the problem when Synology DDNS detect different public IP address which is not accessible in compare with the public IP address showed on router (which is accessible)?
I've created a certificate through Let's Encrypt, and was following along with this video (love the videos, btw), but I ran into a problem when we got to 6:35, applying the certificate settings in the Control Panel > Network > DMS Settings step. On my end, (DSM 7.1.1-42962), there is no "DSM Settings" tab in my Control Panel/Network area. There is only "General", "Network Interface", "Traffic Control", "Static Route", and "Connectivity". I did a search in DSM for "DSM Settings", and it came up with no results.
even after the webserver restarted and I connected using my new hostname, it came up with the same error. I don't see any control panel options that automatically redirect to HTTPS.
Thanks for the tutorial! I already have a domain name from an ext. party, just wondering if it is a good/smart idea to also setup a synology one via ddns on the nas itself, as a sort of backup ? What and is in your opinion the speed negatives on using the https port and redirect the http automatically to https? Also I am thinking about using VPN to connect to my nas ( NordVPN account) and what is in your opinion the best way to connect back to my nas from anywhere and everywhere… thanks in advance!!!
Thank you for this great tutorial, I am unable to see a DSM settings from network tab as of 2024/04/04. Do I still need to do this or is synology doing it automatically with the new DSM?
also I have 2 router nodes from ASUS mesh so it wasn't able to do router configuration byitself. I used UPnP to set up is there any security vulnerabilities I should be aware of?
My box just asked if I want to add the certificate right after adding the DDNS connection, what a breeze.
I have had issues where it would not create it and you would have to manually add it. I think Synology is doing a better job of forcing encryption
Is there a method or a utility of diagnostics to identify if my router/port forwarding is the culprit?
I've tried all of your suggestions except installing a VPN Server. Implemented many of your security suggestions from your other video.
Quick connect seems to be activated properly but I still can't connect outside of my network.
During the DSM process of: Ctrl panel/External Access/Router Config/Set up Router/check network connection scan - I get "no UPnP router was found..." No manufacturer is found when trying to set it up manually..
DSM 7, Synology diskstation 1520+ , AT&T | ARRIS / BGW210 router
in a nutshell...is there a test/site to test does my router support UPnP and if it doesn't, Will I not be able to do things like share via Photos externally? THx!
thanks for the tutorials! Quick question though, you mention the download speed of quicktime but you don't go over how to solve it (or if there to download at decent speeds?). I've been pulling my hair because of that and cannot find solutions on the internet! I'd love to hear your take on that :-)!
Cheers!
I like your videos but your viewers should note that just because you CAN expose your NAS to the Internet doesn't mean you should. I would recommend not using the port-forwarding methods shown here, and always connect to your home using a VPN (e.g. OpenVPN or whatever your router supports). Once you're connected, you can then access your NAS securely as if you were on the local network.
HI. Nice Shirt
how l can redirect http to https , l am have made all necessary requirmets: for example:
l have create A record on my sub-domain, and pint it to my public ip and l can accessit
but is not redirecting to https , l always have to provide the full path nas.domain.com ?
l have done also reverse proxy ?
any solution to my case ?
Can I use this tutorial to share my files on other countries?
Is this something that I will have to set up on both NAS's, or only the NAS that I'm pushing the backups too that's off site?
@SpaceRex
Hi my router is capable of uPnP but I can make it to work with my synology nas. When I do the router check, all passes but the network enviroment. Any ideas how can make it to work? oddly download station automatically set up the appropiate ports under uPnP in my router, plax also. cheers
You probably have another router from you ISP in between your router and the internet. Set that into ‘pass through’ mode or first port forward the ports to your router. Then to the synology
hello, i'm following the intruction, but i'm got trouble when setup the router.
because my router not on list?
Not a big deal! you should just port forward the ports on your router to the IP of the NAS
I have been trying to do that for 8 months. i have asynology ds 918+ and a synology router rc2600. I do have an isp router from AT&T. It tells me I have 2 or more router and can not configure the settings.
Ah. You need to put your ATT router into what is called ‘bridge mode’ so it sends all traffic to the Synology router.
If you can’t to this you will have to first forward the ports from the ATT router to the Synology Router then forward the ports from the Synology router to the Synology
I need to be able to map a drive to my nas externally and I can't or map using \
as\drivex. Synology has very few routers listed so I have to do it manually which I've tried and can't get it to work. any hints? I have everything setup as you've shown,
you are going to want to setup a vpn server in this case: ua-cam.com/video/HF_VgvS90KA/v-deo.html
My Synology randomly cannot connect to the internet all of the sudden.
Set your dns to 8.8.8.8
Watched like millions of times many different videos, still do not understand how this works. Its like rocket science for me. So if i open a port does it remain open for all trying to use my quickconnect or no? does synology photos load faster or not for other people i share link to, so many questions still. Maybe i need a book for dummies or smth cuz i will never understand these internet things fully...
How much of a security risk is this? When I go through the router configuration part, it is asking to set up port forwarding on the router via UPnP. Would that be a big security risk?
Honestly people say you should disable port forwarding on your router, but for most users its more trouble then help honestly. If UPnP is enabled on your router then using it for this is no less secure than not using it (as long as it is enabled on the router)
Hi, I think you will not reply this base on history comment, however I need to ask, I don't see dsm setting in Network..
Go to advanced settings or make sure you are logged in as an administrator
Great video as always from you! Can you please give me your opinion for the following ... I set up a DDNS connection on my NAS, I used the DynDNS service, I created an SSL certificate with Lets Encrypt, I left only the HTTPS port from Synology open on my router which I changed from 5001 in another value, I set up the NAS according to your instructions from your NAS device security video. Everything works great, I can connect from outside to my NAS and I have a secure SSL connection. My question is how secure am I in this way of connecting from outside because I don’t use a VPN? My second question while I'm on my local network when I connect to a NAS device via IP address is that my SSL certificate is not active as far as I can see because the padlock in the address bar on the internet browser says that the connection is not secure and I wonder if it is a security problem and if so, can I create another SSL certificate when I connect from my local network to the NAS? Thank you in advance for your reply :)
So the external access security really comes down to how good your password are.
2) unless your router supports NAS loopback you will always get that SSL error. This is because you are using the IP of your NAS to get to your NAS. And you cannot get an SSL cert for a local IP
I would be concerned about opening up Ports on your router and the use of Port forwarding. I think setting up a VPN into a PC on your Network where you can then access your Data is safer. Security is an entirely different relm than NAS. This guys is great but I would make sure your router is a good one , I recommend a Watch Guard. I would like to hear form others about this because they may have more security background than I .
How to view devices from outside without port forwarding? Its on multiple devices like NVR, DVR and NAS. How is it done? Thanks!
You want to use Quick Connect
@@SpaceRexWill Isn't that a Synology term/feature for connecting without forwarding ports. How is it done? How do I do it on my own server. Thanks!
Cool! I didn't know my DS220J could do DDNS! Thank you.
Glad I could help!
So, I followed this instruction for DDNS and the signed certificate instructions you've also uploaded, very straight forward, easy to follow with your help. However, when trying to use say, DS File, on my cellphone (while not on the local network), quick connect works but the direct connect option using the *.synology.me hostname just does not work. My router has upnp disabled (by choice), but port forwarding is easy. I chose a different set of ports to use, which I won't disclose here. My NAS is set to a static IP and I've only forwarded the chosen HTTPS port to the NAS ip. @SpaceRex any ideas? Any other ports I need to open? In DSM, the DDNS status reports "Normal".
Did you make sure to set the correct port in the direct connect?
It gives me error: 400 Bad Request The plain HTTP request was sent to HTTPS port"
before you type the request type https instead of the http
Thanks for the vid and really appreciate it.
One question in regard to the port forwarding. It is being done on the DSM and how about on the actual physical router itself ( which route the network traffic to the Internet)?
Justin
So this is using UNPnP which you can look up but basically has DSM tell your router what ports to open. This is easier as you don’t have to figure out how to use your routers interface but the ports still get opened on your router
@@SpaceRexWill Thanks for your quick reply. Yes I just tried deleting off the port forwarding rule in my NetGear router and the web-based logging still works.
How do you get you DNS dynamically updated? What if you create an A record but the device IP changes. How will the Synology know what to resolve the IP too?
This is DDNS. It automatically updates anytime the IP changes
@@SpaceRexWill thanks. Do you have any instructions or videos on how to implement this. Would really appreciate it.
Its necessary to open ports in my router? I want to see the files that I have in my NAS on my mobile phone without my wifi connection but I can´t open ports on my router.
In that case you will have to use quick connect
@@SpaceRexWill beeing far from my house? I mean with another connection?
Great tutorial, but you didn't type in the ddns hostname on the address bar. For me, typing in the DDNS hostname brings me to my modem login page. Typing in my DDNS nostname:5000, gives me an error. What do you think I did wrong? Ports have been forwarded through upnp just fine, it seems.
You do not have port 5000 open on your router. If you want to do this forward port 5000 from your router to your synology using port forwarding
Wow amazingly fast response! Thanks! But I actually have forwarded my ports correctly through upnp according to Asustor (green checkmarks beside ports 8000 and 8001). I am actually using asustor (sorry I didn't say it earlier). Typing in privateIP:8000 works just fine. But DDNS Hostname:8000 returns an error. Just DDNS hostname brings me to modem login page. Why do you think that is?
@@SpaceRexWill Do I have to forward the ports in my modem too?
@@SupremeSkeptic If you get to your router page, you don't have the port forwarded correctly. It's really that simple. If your ddnshost:port gives you an error, then we would need to see the error to comment. It's likely a certificate error though. As to forwarding.. the "modem" is the gateway to your internet. it needs to forward the ports as well.
@@eidodk thanks for helping out. It turned out to be a double nat problem. It took me quite a while to find out being the newbie that I am about these things.
Question: I followed all the steps, except I had to setup the port forwarding manually on my router and added both 5000 and 5001. However, I couldn't connect to my NAS when I typed name.synology.me Please advise. Thanks.
Try connecting from outside you local network. You might not have nat loopback
@@SpaceRexWill Thanks! It worked!
very good video!! but I having a lot of troubles with quickconnect asking me to change to change the DSN address. I have tried everything...NO WAY!! do you have any solution?
Go to Control Pannel -> Network -> General -> Manually configure DNS Server. Setup Preferred to 8.8.8.8, alternate to 8.8.4.4
@@SpaceRexWill thanks a lot!! I will try
DDNS 4:41
okay, so I just watched your other video explaining how to access the server from finder in your Mac. My question is, how can I access my server from anywhere in the world from finder on my Mac? This way I don't have to open a website and its always integrated into my files.
You are going to want to setup a VPN server (I have tutorials for that). Then you would be able to connect back and access the share over SMB as if you were local
Please act like your router didnt work in the wizard. I don't understand the last step
Can I later change that quickconnect address?
You can
thanks!
Will using VPN to access or upload/download data make it more secure?
VPN access will almost always make you more secure (assuming you are self hosting)
@@SpaceRexWill Thanks. Can i clarify, the best and somewhat secure way to sync my home nas to my offsite nas (in my brothers house) is 1) Use VPN for both of my nas to connect with each other and 2) encrypt only the files which i deem as sensitive. (so photos/videos will not be encrypted during sync while financial data files will be encrypted during sync - can this be done?). Can the syncing be done automatically but ensure that my backup nas wont delete files incase i mistakenly deleted a file in my home nasdeoxit? Thanks.
Can other users created on the nas login through quickconnect?
Yes they can
@@SpaceRexWill how do you do that?
I haven't set my nas up yet I will this weekend! Do they go through same link and just sign in?
Yes! Any account that has not been disallowed access can. Though you should check out my security video which goes over more secure ways to do this
no mine still say no upnp Routers
If you do not have a upnp router you are going to have to set up port forwarding manually. google "port forwarding {your router name}" and forward the ports you need to the IP of your router
@@SpaceRexWill I ran into the same problem. Can you help which ports have to be forwarded and where?
missed a couple steps there bud
My DS213 is sooo much slower than yours......
Why does my url mydomain.synology.me redirect me to my router login page after setting this all up? I set up DDNS, am using a certificate from LetsEncrypt as the default, and followed all your instructions. NOTE - the only thing I couldn't do was check the box to redirect http connections, because my Network Settings does not have a DSM Settings tab.
I figured it out. The redirect http box is now in another section, and I also had to add port fwd on my router. The setup on the NAS seemed to actually make the change on my router config, but I guess it doesn't actually change anything on the router itself.
@@Dadinator28 you shouldve said which section the redirect http box was in
So by Setting up my Router, Synology didn't find a UPnP Router. What can I do about this?
Turn on the UPnP on your router first.
@@89mictlan Tried your advice but no luck. Both of my NASs can see the UPnP Router. Any thoughts on what the problem might be?
