I was just thinking about how he has the perfect sense of humor for political commentary. He doesn't rely on punchlines or cheap shots, he's just naturally funny. Most of the things he says that evoke laughter are just short but poignant observations that point out the absurdity of the world around us. It's brilliant and is missing desperately from present day political comedians who insert their comedic insights as a bit instead of just a humourous moment seamlessly woven into the message.
I've discovered him and his lectures in UA-cam only recently and I can't get enough. I think he explains brilliantly the issues at the core of the system in our society!
I am haunted by his political observations. His focus on the foundations of suffering in our societies is profoundly heartbreaking. Class is one of those categories that has brought about our inhumanity and made it look normal.
I was pretty apathetic in politics til I joined the Air Force. Then I educated myself, 2 books that learned me. The Jungle by Upton Sinclair and All Quiet On the Western Front by Erich Mari Remarque. Probably butchered his name but the book smacks you alongside the head, it at least it should. The whole system in the USA is dedicated to making the top dozen richest pukes even richer. The working class is brain washed really. I had to do serious mental heavy lifting to figure it out 😟
@Luke In no way I would condemn Chomsky. He also helped me becoming more leftist. His work on ideology and so on is good, but whenever he opens his mouth about historic socialist societies, or leninism, he is totally wrong and bourgeois.
Chomsky has managed to become 'the world's most important intellectual', sacred cow of the 'left', and treated as practically infallible, while knowing less about Marx than any reasonably bright kid who picks up 'Capital' and browses through some of it. That's pretty incredible to me. This is coming from someone who also admires and was inspired by Chomsky, and I still value his critiques, but I have to say that nowadays he is doing way more harm with his idiotic 'lesser evilism', which is by now completely bankrupt, than any good that comes out of his appearing on liberal shows rehashing the same old stuff. (with his stature, announcing you need to shut up and vote Democrat no matter what is like a papal bull to people who might otherwise engage their brains)
I love all of the great radical thinkers of today (Chris Hedges, Noam Chomsky, Tariq Ali, Richard Wolff, Ralph Nader, Abby Martin, Chalmers Johnson, Glen Ford, Michael Hudson, Cornel West, Norman Finkelstein, and whoever else I forgot), but Dr. Parenti is probably my favorite.
Parenti's analysis is so good because he avoids being blinded by mistaken ideological dogmas. For example, there are always a few, sometimes many, leftists who fall for the trap set for them by the empire, or who are fooled by their own conceptions on certain topics. Example: many fell for the trap that somehow the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe was a great victory for the people. So they worship reactionaries like Vaclav Havel, who cares only for human rights if his own class is the victim. And who supported the Empire's wars. Or take all the leftists who supported the war against Yugoslavia because they were told it was to prevent 'genocide'. Or take those leftists who keep rejecting the fact that JFK was assassinated by the gangsters within the national security state, because they don't believe JFK was progressive enough to be assassinated. Parenti consistently avoids those traps.
@@markarmage3776 "real economics" at schools? You mean the sort of bullshit with priests (academia) worshiping an all perfect God(Capitalists and markets)? Fuck that. Schools and universities are filled with shitty propaganda pieces. We don't need people like that. I would also like to know the meaning of "real economics". Kindly elucidate.
It's a loaded title. The "sustainable economy" he's exposing is the one that sustains the very few who profit from it. For them, an economy is sustainable if it secures their economic position by driving the rest of us into destitution.
starting around 3:00 Parenti says he just got what the topic was just before speaking. He says there must be some confusion(i think they were confusing Michael with his son Christian Parenti who is expert on "Creating a Sustainable Economy", and other man made ecological problems). And he says he is going to talk about wealth(the smarmy side of course which is truth)
Wealth is the worst addiction, most destructive and deadly ever . It's not drugs . The only reason the drugs business has so much violence and addicts dying , is because they are illegal . The Swiss maintenance program results in violence plummeting between the gangs and terrorizing neighborhoods and cities , addicts take less and even come off totally better than the abstinence model ,because they are no longer desperate , anxious and contribute and be productive again to society again and lives a relatively good life . Those who make better lives form themselves from the war on drugs are the big banks, the drug cartels , the prison industry , slush funds for US illegal foreign and domestic ops , the police state , etc
Like the 'rat park' experiments where the rats who were secluded in empty cages were given a choice between regular water, or water with cocaine, the rats would overwhelmingly choose cocaine - sometimes to the point of overdose/death. But if rats were given a 'park' with toys, slides, stuff to do, other rats girls and boys, etc, they would ignore the cocaine water every time.
I agree with Michael about most of the things he said apart from space! Many on the left and right think we spend to much on space, that's a mistake in truth we spend more on golf than exploring space yet space exploration has given us fantastic benefits including environmental monitoring, satellite communications, vastly better weather predictions, meteor monitoring etc
It's honestly a serious oversight. With improvements in travel speeds(and lowering of associated resource costs) and colonisation tech we could just take at least a portion of our manufacturing, machines and everything, automate the vast majority of it, and just "outsource" it to the tired ol' red planet, if not half-arse it and chuck it at the moon. It's not just not off the table, it's conquering a few decimeters of the table each year and it only gets faster as the human-habitable state of our little wet spess pebble deteriorates.

51:38 I've been in the military for about 13 years now and having enough money for things has "always" been an issue, particularly for things like training. It's always seemed strange to me that so much money supposedly goes into the military, but how all the branches are always struggling with budget, and no one seems to know where all this money we're getting is actually going. Over the years, I've seen many members get denied training opportunities, because apparently there wasn't enough money to pay for it. With every year, it feels like Tricare covers less and less.
I wish these scholars would sound absurd, talking about an antiquated system of the past. And children of a socialist society, sitting in class, would yawn at them....
"Continuum" shows a dystopian future like Parenti describes, and is becoming more and more obvious as the future we're headed for. When Parenti describes democracy around 40:00, what he's describing is "elective authoritarianism." Democracy is when the people make decisions on more than merely who will make decisions for them. Elective authoritarianism is when people vote for who the authoritarians will be. This quote needs to become the motto of the United States: "The surest way to gain wealth in capitalist society is to have the foresight, the resourcefulness, and the intelligence and creativity to pick the right parents at birth."
People who arent interested in politics, and do not invest any effort into understanding it or caring, should be allowed to copout of the electoral process. That is what the US has, the freedom for people who do not care, to not care, and everything that logically follows, ie not showing up to vote, should be a human right. What people want to do is not vote, but then feel free to whinge about being disenfranchised, and demand that politics be more fun and interesting just for them, to induce them to become involved. That is not the way the world works, and it has never worked like that.
@@lieshtmeiser5542 In a system that disenfranchises people from participating by making their participation as meaningless as possible, of course many of them won't feel like participation is worth it, and will abstain. You have to take an honest look at how the systems work before you can really assess why people don't participate in it. Not just the political system, but the economic system as well. And then you have to look at how those systems influence the cultural norms. You're superimposing the conditions in the United States for "that's just how human beings are," which is insane. That's how they are in the United States because of how the systems of the United States work, and how they've influenced norms, NOT because that's how people are. Yes, there will always be some people who don't want to participate for one reason or another, but the more people are invested in a thing, the more likely they are to be active in ensuring its success. You will no doubt agree that land owners and business owners and others with a lot to lose are more likely than average citizens to take an interest in politics *because* they have a lot to lose, but to then brush off the rest of the populace that has been systematically disenfranchised as "they don't want to vote, but they want to whine about being disenfranchised etc" shows that you don't really understand what's going on beyond noticing that a lot of people don't vote. You don't understand how things got that way, why they persist, or what's necessary to change it. You don't seem to understand that "the way the world works" depends on the conditions in each part of the world; plenty of countries with the same system have much, MUCH higher voter turn-out because they are more likely to see their vote as having an impact on things, and the less that they see their government responding to them over time and regardless of protests and changing votes, the fewer people see value in voting...and that doesn't account for the other issues of voting, like being able to afford taking the time off work to stand in line for half to a full day because your politicians have systematically reduced the number of polling places. Sorry for the rant, but the whole premise of your post is just nonsense. Yes, people should have a right to participate or not, but when the systems are set up to intentionally cause that outcome, AS THEY ARE IN THE UNITED STATES and some other countries, it stops being about rights.
@@samuelrosander1048 "of course many of them won't feel like participation is worth it, and will abstain." I think you make the mistake of believing that these individuals are behaving and/or thinking rationally; that cannot be assumed. First of all, they may be so drug addled, or mentally ill, that the pre-requisites for enfranchisement are not met. " That's how they are in the United States because of how the systems of the United States work," Perenti is talking more about the USA. In my country it is mandatory to vote, and it is commonplace to hear of people so disconnected from politics, by their own choice of lifestyle and priorities, that say they ate a fine for not voting. That is the main class I refer to, not the people that are incapable of it because of addiction or illness. Other nations that have voluntary voting would be similar analogues to the USA. "Yes, people should have a right to participate or not, but when the systems are set up to intentionally cause that outcome, AS THEY ARE IN THE UNITED STATES and some other countries, it stops being about rights." This is untrue. Politics of the USA has transformed and evolved over time in line with changes to the demographics and american society's beliefs and values. Back when the US was a more god fearing and harsh place, marxist ideas wouldnt have had a look in; then things changed. Now the Democratic Party is the party of woke 'regressivism', why? Because society has changed. Voters who care make their votes count. Wiki: "Approximately 240 million people were eligible to vote in the 2020 presidential election and roughly 66.1% of them submitted ballots, totaling about 158 million." Thats plenty to get a fair representation of what people in the US wanted. Biden is drastically different to Trump on some issues, and a stable continuation of US policy at the same time. There will always be people whinging about xyz. There are those that believe wholeheartedly in compulsory voting, or that Trump was the incarnation of evil, etc None of that is unarguably right or true.

You could start with the 1877 St. Louis Commune, or looking into who Smedley Butler was and his efforts in supporting labor movements, or the rise of unions led by Marxists, or the battle of Blair Mountain. How can we restore the Commons? And could it spearhead a turn to realize a rebirth of the sustainable economy? That was what the emotional questioner at 53:30 wanted to ask, and I have wondered it for years as well. I really think we have all the tools.
Hello. If I might hazzard: do you mean with _restore the Commons_ that there is a return to there being open land that all can enjoy, and/or that Governmental policy would respond to the will of the people, especially locally with meaningful jury justice and accountable elected Sherriffs ? What do you precisely mean ? If that was what you meant, I don't think it is possible to go _back_ to a condition where land is relatively easy to get in America under the same chaotic and privatized conditions that seems to have dominated, because there are vastly more people now (higher competition for land), and because it is easier for 'commoners' to get to land during the chaos of enormous migration into the USA which is a condition that is not occuring now. The point is that it would have to be clearly organized to give every citizen their right to land, inalienable and in equal value amount. The chaotic and also erroneous way of land ownership in the past has lead to the current centralization of wealth and loss of an equitable society. It should already have been well organized back then. However we can still do it now, indeed we do have al the tools imaginable. In terms of politically reigning in the ruling class, I think we need to form a new type of Government where representatives are elected by only 50 persons, so that the Plutocracy has less chance of manipulating the votes. I drew a system here: www.law4.org/post/005/DA_government/images/index.html If that is creating a society, then I also think we need hard action against existing Oligarchy, with such laws as: wealth per person is maximized at for example 30 times average of the Nation, and no business can have more employees then 2 000. Nations should also not be too large, because the Government looses it's connection with the people. Each USA State would become a Sovereign Nation, complete with it's own coin and foreign policy. These changes are so great that they have little realistic chance in the current world, until after a nuclear world war. Since that seems to be coming, it is useful to start preparing not only to survive such a war, but also to rebuild society in some sort of better way, perhaps as suggested above. I'm sorry I try to answer your question, not knowing to whom you asked it (perhaps to the speaker in the video), but I doubt anyone else will even try to answer it here. What do you think will restore the Commons and create a sustainable economy ? There is all kinds of activities necessary to be done, what would you like to do ? Propaganda ? Setting up a co-operative business ? Buying land through a donation fund for distribution ? Engaging in Parallel Government ? Military training & defense of would be ruling class assassination targets ? All of the above, other ?
The US Federal Government as the sole issuer of the US Dollar has no need to borrow from the wealthy in order to pay for things. Otherwise I agree with everything else. I think this part of Federal Finance was not known by anyone until after Dr Parenti made this presentation.
"People can run their own lives and communities" People are permitted to run their own lives, via local councils or on compounds or communes, just so long as the people in charge allow it. So your comment is flawed, because it implies that theres no such thing as leaders. The US has huge freedom. The Amish and hippy communes and LDS compounds are great examples of that.
The ordinary people of an imperializing country do suffer somewhat, but in an idirect way, they benefit as well. The plunder of slavery for instance, trickled down quite substantially to the average British person. All those textiles and guns -needed to be sold to the African emperors for slaves - needed to be produced. The slaves and the goods needed to be shipped to where there was demand. Someone needs to feed all those slaves Now you have demand for textile workers, gunsmiths, shipwrights, sailors, farmhands etc. It was all these new earning opportunities that probably allowed the workers of the first world to be so aggressive and successful. Not to mention the direct benefits of imperialism to the working people of the 1st world. For instance: France got a huge overhaul of its infrastructure and sewers under Napoleon the 3rd. How the hell did he pay for all those parks railways roads and stuff? By plundering his overseas possessions of course!
10M refusing to work can end up w 50M & how will empire run w out our $$$$ Seems we have more power than we realise If we pull investments out of the casino 🎰 how would empire maintain?
Democracy tricky word. The word from ancient greeks. The word "democracy" (Greek: dēmokratia, δημοκρατία) combines the elements dêmos (δῆμος, which means "people") and krátos (κράτος, which means "force" or "power"), and thus means literally "people power". In the words "monarchy" and "oligarchy", the second element comes from archē (ἀρχή), meaning "beginning (that which comes first)", and hence also "first place or power", "sovereignty". One might expect, by analogy, that the term "demarchy" would have been adopted for the new form of government introduced by Athenian democrats. However, the word "demarchy" (δημαρχία) had already been taken and meant "mayoralty", the office or rank of a high municipal magistrate. (In present-day use, the term "demarchy" has acquired a new meaning.) Hmmm the term is not different now.
Michael and many like him provide a great critique of the crony capitalist systems we live in. However political and social commentators rarely address the fundamental issue, which is the state of human consciousness that leads us to create these violent and fear driven regimes. All politics and socioeconomic reforms will lead us nowhere but to other versions of what we already have until we look within to start our own personal transformations. The rest is victim talk about us and our nasty oppressors.
"crony capitalist systems" Do you really believe that the class interest of the capitalist can be separated from state powers? Capitalism is inherently tied to the maintaining of state powers to serve the interest of the capitalist class! You can''t have a fantasy capitalism where the state is out of the picture, because the capitalist class have a vested interest to use state powers to create economic and social policy that creates a climate that is beneficial for them to generate stable profits in. Even if we assume the state disappeared tomorrow, the capitalist class that would still control most of the arable farm land, the industry, the natural resources, and the infrastructure of society, would just create their own state that they directly control. The Capitalist class would be in direct control of the state and the ability to create policy of the state. The illusion that people somehow have an ability to influence the social and economic climate by voting for one millionaire politician or another millionaire politician would be abolished. When the capitalist directly control state policy in this matter, this is the definition of a fascist economic system. It's the undeniable end result of capitalism and the degeneration of capitalist society simultaneously. This notion that actual existing capitalism is somehow "crony capitalism" is simply ridiculous.
Sadly your response demonstrates the problem we have. Political models of whatever brand will not lead us out of the wilderness of a depressed consciousness. If that sounds too woo woo for you, I'm sorry.
What i was clearly pointing out is that it's silly to make a distinction between "crony capitalism" and "capitalism", because there is none, and it's ridiculous to state otherwise. Throughout the evolution of Capitalism as a system, it has always operated the same way at a basic level ever since it's inception. During it's tenure, the use and manipulation of state powers has always served the class interest of the capitalist class. This is an undeniable fact of capitalism that is a matter of record, not some "woo woo political diagnosis of a particular brand" as you would try to make it out to be. I stated solid reasons for my position. I even gave a hypothetical for what the capitalist class would do if the state suddenly disappeared to finalize my point and case. But what about you? You have no reasons for your position. By suggesting that the capitalism we currently experience is somehow "crony capitalism", implies that you think that the vested class interest of the capitalist to maintain state powers for their profiteering interest, can somehow be separated from capitalism. It's beyond silly to think that capitalism would conspire against its own interest, through the artificial separation of itself from state power. It's especially silly when you consider the history which shows that the capitalist class have always been very shrewd, sinister and calculated in getting what they want, ever since it's inception, and that it's always been tied with the manipulation of state power and state policy in order to achieve that aim.
One thing Parenti consistently got wrong is that the national debt is bad. It's not - it's our surplus. Or, at least it could be. But the national debt itself, regardless of how that money is spent, is not a bad thing. In fact, PAYING DOWN the national debt is a *horrendous* idea, and every time it has happened, an economic catastrophe directly followed. Each and every time without exception.
That is untrue simply linguistically. You are correct of course that 8 Billion people on this planet is unsustainable but the population would sort itself in short order if the economy became sustainable.
Which currency is the "debt" to be paid in? Who makes and issues said currency? Of course we do need to tax the big elephant 🐘 💰 rich a lot more, but not because the federal government needs their money, but because the big elephant rich are too powerful.
"because the big elephant rich are too powerful." I dont see evidence of that really. The money is a symptom, or side effect, of the accumulation of power, or the abuse of some corrupted system (eg the acquisition of oil and gas fields by Khodorkhovsky). What mattered their was insider trading, privileged knowledge, and approval/failure of government. You give the rich too much credit, particularly these days with the internet and social media, the rich are targeted and neutered quite easily. A good example is Bezos and his ex, she cant give the money away fast enough. She is likely to be rich forever, but youd be a fool to think she was wielding significant political power in washington. There are many other far more powerful lobby groups and influencers in US politics than simply "big elephant rich". You are grossly oversimplifying your world view.

I would love to see Parenti educating Chomsky on socialism in the 20th century. Because in this regard, Chomsky is a bourgeois
Your hero Chomsky is a shill for the new world order: bankers' communism.
Chomsky , speaking about public lectures, he is almost a liberal. Parenti is a based marxist leninist.

A brilliant thinker. Truly wish that more were exposed to his work.

This quote needs to become the motto of the United States:
"The surest way to gain wealth in capitalist society is to have the foresight, the resourcefulness, and the intelligence and creativity to pick the right parents at birth."
@@samuelrosander1048 "of course many of them won't feel like participation is worth it, and will abstain."
I think you make the mistake of believing that these individuals are behaving and/or thinking rationally; that cannot be assumed. First of all, they may be so drug addled, or mentally ill, that the pre-requisites for enfranchisement are not met.
" That's how they are in the United States because of how the systems of the United States work,"
Perenti is talking more about the USA.
"Yes, people should have a right to participate or not, but when the systems are set up to intentionally cause that outcome, AS THEY ARE IN THE UNITED STATES and some other countries, it stops being about rights."
This is untrue.
Wiki: "Approximately 240 million people were eligible to vote in the 2020 presidential election and roughly 66.1% of them submitted ballots, totaling about 158 million."
Thats plenty to get a fair representation of what people in the US wanted. Biden is drastically different to Trump on some issues, and a stable continuation of US policy at the same time.
There will always be people whinging about xyz. There are those that believe wholeheartedly in compulsory voting, or that Trump was the incarnation of evil, etc None of that is unarguably right or true.

Do some research on the history of U.S. labor movements, including the various communes that have risen and been struck down, and you'll find that Marxism was not widely rejected so much as stamped out by the capitalists via the government and far right supporters.
I drew a system here: www.law4.org/post/005/DA_government/images/index.html
If that is creating a society, then I also think we need hard action against existing Oligarchy, with such laws as: wealth per person is maximized at for example 30 times average of the Nation, and no business can have more employees then 2 000.
All of the above, other ?
did someone heckle him? what did they say?
Tools yes, but not the will.

@@lieshtmeiser5542 LMAO, best laugh today
In an "indirect way?" You have to be kidding me. Either that or you haven't been to the United States.

(In present-day use, the term "demarchy" has acquired a new meaning.)
Hmmm the term is not different now.

Capitalism IS the crisis!!!!
"crony capitalist systems"
Do you really believe that the class interest of the capitalist can be separated from state powers?
Unfortunately they're co-reinforcing!
We must attack the problem from all angles I think!

That is untrue simply linguistically. You are correct of course that 8 Billion people on this planet is unsustainable but the population would sort itself in short order if the economy became sustainable.

I dont see evidence of that really.
Soil doesn't have brain, nervous system as we know but still it is smarter then them. How? For example carbon is bad for the environment oil, coal what it do buried under from the surface. What they do? They bringing it up and burn it. Another example they are really like shiny things for instance diamond, ruby, sapphire, gold. Who else likes shiny things? CROWS! But for me they are not even smarter then crows.
I dont agree with a lot of the cringe anti white talking points and refusal to admit Europeans have an advantage fundamentally
What..?
@@DREADTRIPLESIX hes saying the same woke nonsense that isn't supported by any evidence, which just shuts my brain off.
@@Strange9952 What the hell do you mean anti-white talking points and fundamental European advantage? I don’t understand. You’re talking like a white supremacist weirdo and that shuts my brain off. Get that crap out of your brain.

This speaker, Michael Panenti is acting like some paranoid hypocrite. He has presented no alternatives to the things he criticizes.
Yet he has anointed himself with some sort of ability to criticize money and technology but uses it and has benefitted from it's development.
He needs to look into a mirror to examine himself standing there being paid with money and utilizing the technology of a microphone to enhance his voice.
He has no answers.

The argument of if you don't like something then don't use it is pretty silly in the context of our modern society that would be like saying have you ever been down a badly paved pubic road? Well if you don't like the roads then don't drive on them it's dumb and idk if you have ever heard anything else from parenti but his alternative is pretty clear he advocates for socialism in which I hear all the time socialist criticisms of modern technology but not because it is bad but because it is being utilized in a way that is bad, technology in our modern capitalist society is used for many bad things automation of the work place making tons of jobs obsolete as well as using technology for war and surveillance like michael said. no one is saying we should go back to the stone age but that we should look at our monitary and technological ways of our society in a different way
@@nroselius5551 Lets have a look at your argument :- You say " like saying have you ever been down a badly paved public road? " Well if you don't like the roads then don't drive on them it's dumb and .......
You have not even learned to use full stops and commas so how is anyone going to be able to understand what you are saying?
You seem to be saying socialism isn't bad but is being used badly ! Yes it is being used badly because it is conducive to bad use of resources..
You s also seem to be saying "technology in our modern capitalist society is used for many bad things automation of the work place making tons of jobs obsolete ."
That is an old foolish worn out argument used hundreds of years ago to do away with technology to keep using inefficient means in production.
Do you want to do away with electricity and motor driven machines replace it with manual labour just to have more jobs?
What's your "different way " ?
You may not have noticed but a job is not something you' have' but is an activity you "do".
Well call me paranoid also but it struck me how almost all of the people I see arguing the anti-socialism position or just trying to confuse the topic on obscure leftist videos like these have a blank profile when you click on their name.
