I came to this anime expecting a cute and heart-warming Age gap romantic relationship between a beautiful girl and a handsome middle-aged man. But instead I was slapped by a gorgeous realistic relationship of the 2. They both know how bad their relationships are for the 2 of them. They didn't focus on romance at all. It focuses more and more about the growth and coming of age between the 2 and shows deep meanings throughout the anime. And this very music made me cry because the middle-aged man protected the girl's feelings and even if he doesn't have the right to do so, OR had to do it at all. He wanted to protect her feelings and not let her have the scar that he felt when he was a lot younger because of pure kindness and warm intentions. Even if this DOES look like he's walking in a landmine where she would fall for him even more. He still hopes that these feelings of hers would fade away somehow rather than get scarred by him himself.
I've read the manga, actually in manga kondo finally realized that he love akira as well, but he know that if he make this relationship come true akira will never ever run on the track anymore, and kondo won't that, He won't akira end up like him, he sacrifices his feelings for the better future for akira, this is romance but not love story, i mean more than love, have u ever heard that "if u love someone u will try the best even if u are not belong to him/her" And that's what kondo did, what an outstanding romance
I came for the romance, invested emotionally in the characters, then had it all torn away by the plot diverging into a "personal growth" story :'(. I'm still heart broken when I hear this tune.

The melody itself sounds like two things to me: Akira's young and sincere feelings, which Kondo knows he cannot reciprocate, and also his melancholy because it's a refreshing sincerity that he hasn't felt since his youth. Why is it that this anime and soundtrack can't get out of my head?
This anime is easily in my Top 5 animes of all time. So beautiful, so peaceful, so emotional, so happy sad & sad happy..... My throat was choked with emotions while watching the last few episodes of this show, always on the brink of crying. This show hits you right in the heart, reminds you of lost friendships, forgotten youth, failed love, letting go..... And I loved its English dub btw, it's wonderful.
To Kondo, Akira is somewhat or looks like his past. He quit his passion for litterature to live the love of his life, even though he ended up divorced. To not repeat the same possible mistake, he wants Akira to choose what she likes et lives for before love. At the same time, he wants her first love to be great and passionate, atleast, in term of feeling, so it won't go to waste.

While i think the manga is better than the anime because it has enough content to flesh out the ending, i think the embrace scene is something that hits so much harder in the anime, thanks to this song. It makes the moment feel intense, intimate, and beautiful all at once.
The anime this is from totally slayed me. Expected romance, was a beautiful one building, then it was all torn away in favor of a "personal growth" story :'(. The live action version ended better than the manga or the anime...as rare as that is, but even it felt strange.
Are friendships, relationships, rapports not respected if those involved are not the same age or undergoing the same phase of life? Today, people are so quick to shame relationships if the individuals involved are not of similar ages. People seem to lose their minds over anything above a seven-year age difference. Without any background information, people everywhere are constantly judging relationships they don’t know anything about. Differences in appearance should not matter. Differences in backgrounds should not matter. Differences in age definitely should not matter. So, next time you come into contact with a couple in an age-gap relationship, swallow the judgement, evaluate why you even feel justified to judge and let people enjoy the people that bring them the most joy.
@@nournana6656 To say with complete assurance, I need to watch the show one more time (which I plan to do after I read the Manga which I also plan to do very soon) but as it stands now, I feel Tachibana was using Kondou to distract herself from the unease that she felt towards the thought that she may have possibly cowardicely given up on her dream of being a trackstar, due to her injury. Kondou knew that that was exactly what she was doing, so he tried to play more of a friend role. If you wanna say Tachibana was in love, then thats true. It's onesided but thats the beauty of this story. It's more about the characters and their helping eachother past obstacles and freeing themselves from the anxieties and troubles in their hearts, birthed from not confronting reality and running from their pasts, rather than some generic love story.
