7 Reasons I love my BMW i3

  • I absolutely love this little car and wanted to share seven reasons I think its probably one of the best cars you can drive and one of the best EVs ever made.
I've driven a lot of electric miles since 2014 (this i3 has travelled over 50,000 miles) so feel qualified to say that no other car comes close to offering the performance, comfort, eco-credentials, technology, practicality and value that the i3 delivers. It also has really cool reversing lights.
    My seven reasons:
    1. Design
    2. Acceleration
    3. One-Pedal Driving
    4. Reversing Lights
    5. Carbon-Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP)
    6. Interior Space
    7. Rear-hinged 'suicide' doors
What do you love about your i3? If you don't have one, what makes you interested in them? Leave me a comment!

Hey, this was by far the most emotional description of the BMW i3 I have seen on YT. Its completely how I feel about this car too. Unbelievable nice video...THANKS !!!

Despite having recently got a Tesla model 3, I'm still hanging onto my old i3, even though it's getting on a bit, it's still a bloody great little car; quick, fun to drive, cheap to run and innovately designed. This video beautifully sums up all these attributes.

Even before I watched this video, these are the things I loved about the i3. One thing more is that the i3 is light enough (slightly more than 3,000 lbs) and this is truly a bonus for hauling the car and my family the extra miles with the relatively small battery pack compared with other EVs. Also, given the current gasoline shortage in the U.K., i3 and other EV owners would certainly feel so lucky and privileged for owning an EV!

You've nailed it! Totally agree with all seven points, especially the 'symbiotic' connection to the car in reference to the instant acceleration. Nice video!

It's not just the acceleration, it's also the fact that the strong regenerative braking makes the car feel like it's connected to you through your foot. The car feels like an extension of your thoughts.

Totally agree! Same here. Thanks for compiling these. Looking forward to more i3 or car content 🤙

    Hi dude, spot-on review.
I just got my i3 then we got locked down!, thanks for all your hard work in producing the hi-quality video.
    Very well done

I would add the excellent visibility (including night) and the fact that you can actually transport a full size dishwasher (oven, washing machine) in its trunk (seat folded).

    I had a 2018 F80 M3 before my 2020 jet black i3s.
All i can say is i never shed a single tear for selling the M3 and would give the M3 a run for its money for sure.

Great to hear Xeno! I’m lucky enough to have just got a Tesla M3P - Youtubage coming soon. It’s pretty special but I still love the i3 for all the reasons I mentioned in this vid.

nooooddy the one and only reason that kept me away from Tesla is the overall build quality.
Its tech and acceleration are from another league.

Bold comment placing the i3 against the M3. I had a m4 and love the i3 too, but the skinny tires really limit the hell out of the i3.

    • @xenomorph1317
      @xenomorph1317 3 роки тому

      Ray Syd true.
In corners and on track the I3s will not keep up and i felt the limit of both cars more then once.
Not only the skinny tires, but also the suspension...
The M3 is build for the track and with that also comes the disadvantages on public roads due to the suspension and steering.

I would add that the plastic panels combined with the small size mean you don't have to worry about car parking dents. I have never seen an i3 with dents.

Brilliant video, I've had an 2018 i3S since Feb, sadly since lockdown I've not been able to drive it as much as I'd like but I feel the same way, brilliant, oftern misunderstood car.

The wing out doors are my only real complaint. They are difficult to get around in a typical car garage. The bottom of the wing out door juts out a little to far and stabs my leg. If they just reduce that, I could easily live with it. I only bring this up because it was just announced that BMW will continue to make and support the I3. Great news!!! I hope this will also include future design tweaks for my next I3. ;-)
The BMW i3 is definitely very special.

Those little 'wing tips' on the end of the doors always catch me out. I catch my trousers/coat/children/priceless Persian rugs on them all the time!

Me & my better half are considering an EV & obviously this car was in my radar. How long have you owned one? I've heard that the servicing side is pretty expensive (not surprising as it's a BMW)..I realise it ain't cheap to buy either, even used (as we will be buying) But we love the car tbh, hired one for a month to try & we loved it. And good to hear the "local accent" ..in North East too. ;-) ...Curious how have you found the servicing / running costs?
    Thanks for review 👍

So far with my used bmw i3 94ah 2017, it works like a charm and I haven’t had any big maintenance besides getting new tires. Make sure you check the kWh on your used bmw i3 because if it isn’t nearly the kWh it was supposed to and lost over half I would not buy that vehicle. The battery depletion over time needs to be watched. Take note of your mile trip counter on the left of the display above the steering wheel. There’s some good videos that show how to get into the secret menu and overall see your kWh in the car. Your last 5 digits of the cars VIN will be the code you must enter before you have access to that menu. It’s very important you compare the kWh before you buy. A new replacement battery is $16,000. Basically a new car.

Also the car isn’t aerodynamic, the coefficient of drag is definitely higher than that of a Tesla. So on the highway definitely try to stay out of the HOV lane, and if you are in heavy traffic you’d rejoice because maybe a few stop and go will save some of your mileage. Over time I gotten used to switching my car to eco pro as I leave the house, comfort if on highway only, eco pro+ if I’m not going too far. I’m in Arizona though so the weather is making this hard on me LOL. Eco pro+ turns off the air but there’s still some flow. Overall when you have the air going it will cut a significant amount of miles, highway = death to the battery (literally a 30mile trip took over half my full charge but I made it back without charging it). It really depends on how you drive and if it’s on comfort as well. You will however feel the coefficient of drag and it’ll feel a little drifty or slight resistance (for me when I drive south - winds etc.). I give my little EV go cart a 9/10 because I don’t pay to charge my car and I don’t necessarily go far I just stay on campus really.

Currently saving up for a portable generator (yes I know it’ll be gas, but it’s better than getting my car towed). I hear a lot of good things about the GP3000i by Generac if anyone is interested in that sort of thing, sometimes we can miscalculate how many miles we’d be doing, especially while on the highway. As long as it’s an inverter generator. Anyone used one for emergencies?

    • @xenomorph1317
      @xenomorph1317 3 роки тому

Sure you can charge with a generator.
I know some generators pull out 2.5 Kwh, or more, thats about the same a original i3 charging adapter gives.
Downside off a generator that you still use gasoline and probably always will cost more then charging by power socket/wallbox, it is noisy and you can’t put it in your garage if you do not have proper ways to get rid off exhaust fumes, and the bigger the generator the higher the fuel usage and fuel costs.
      Little fact,
The batterypack of the new 120ah I3s is about 39kwh big.
If it is fully empty a generator that gives 2,5kwh will charge the battery overtime for about 15hours, a lot off fuel i reckon.....
If you have the opportunity for a wallbox or power/wall socket or charging at public stations go for it because it will always be cheaper.
