  • Retired Air Force combat controller and author Dan Schilling speaks with David Hookstead his book "Alone at Dawn."
The book tells the true story of fellow 24th STS member and Medal of Honor recipient John Chapman. Chapman was killed during the Battle of Takur Ghar in Afghanistan when he was left alone on a mountaintop against enemy fighters. John fought bravely four hours by himself, and Dan breaks it all down.

The first known recorded combat video of a MOH recipient ... amazing stuff.

In my experiences with other "veterans", Legion, etc: Air Force personnel have not and are not considered to be of the stature of "grunts". I have frequently received, after stating that I was in The Air Force and a VV, with remarks like "oh, well you didn't do anything", or, "oh yeah, you had it easy"., things like that. any army or marine that did 1/2 of what Chapman did would be front page news and an immediate CMH recipient. Think of the USAF pilots that risked their lives providing close ground support, because it seems that as soon as ground troops get into any kind of a fire fight they are calling for air support. They face: their plane is hit and explodes, or maybe they are able to parachute out but also face being shot at while in the parachute, being captured by the enemy once they are on the ground, possibly injured before parachuting and/or taken prisoner or sometimes shot on sight. These pilots face as much danger as ground troops, and often their courage continue on mission to give such ground support saves many lives on the ground. Think back to the siege of Khe San - w/o aerial ground support missions we likely would have faced what the French did at Dien Bien Phu . The female USAF pilot whose A10 was shot up so bad that it was even amazing it would fly - but she pressed on and then made it back to base. The whole krux is that the Army and Marines, and to some extent the Navy, all feel their troops are more seserving . No man left behind - hell - the "Seals" last know Chapman was in that bunker and yet when they retreated to call for air support they didn't bother to grab him?

Sgt Gutierrez got his lung blown out his back and kept shooting dudes and calling in brrrrrts on the building next to him. Some of the most bad ass work anyone has ever done and he’s still not been upgraded from the air force cross to the MOA that he deserves.

Its a shame the navy was trying to fight against Chapmans medal. They said if he gets one then they get one too. The leader of the devgru unit, Slabinski, got a MOH for the same mission smh. They failed and got a MOH. Im pro all military branches just crazy that kind of BS happens

A DA Form 638 can be filled out by any service member from any branch for any actions that are above and beyond for service member from any branch. So these controllers are doing heroic shit, the ODAs and Ds they are attached to can write it up. Come on man.
