Thanks for sharing your thoughts on NomNom! I didn't even think of the AI aspect of artwork but you bring up a good point. As to the card layout, I really don't like how they have it now with a "list" format but good news is the NomNom team has addressed this issue and the card layout UI looks much cleaner now with the use of boxes and sections similar to more traditional TCGs. Being a fellow Metazoo refugee, I am cautiously optimistic for NomNom - the team has been very friendly so far and communication is very open. I may not financially invest too much in NomNom at this point but hopeful for the brand to grow and like you said, become more polished 😊
Interested in seeing where Nom Nom can go.. May not be my favorite card design/layout, but the Artwork is very well made.. Chronicles of Arcane I backed early, I actually enjoy the Magic/YuGiOh ''Look" to it.. Very glad Poncho just officially joined, was kinda hoping that would happen.. 🃏
I’ll have to look more into Chronicles. I like the card art and design on their website. It’s interesting to hear that many others seem to agree with me about rhe NomNom card design.

Great vid. I am backing Nom Nom and I will say that the community is pretty strong so far which is a good sign to me. Would love to hear your thoughts on Wondrlnd 2nd campaign just released today. Backing that as well but it seems to have lost a lot of interest
Prolly cause its cheaper to commission artist to make a character without a background. Then someone else comes in with simple tools to make the back ground maybe? Which might tie into the the whole thing not looking clean dialed while the toons look awesome.
At this point Im a tcg angel investor, I did Grand Archive, Elestrals, Altered, I have some dream book and Nom Nom. I think this space is important and even if the initial product may not be completely cohesive if it looks good and has good people behind it I want to support it
Besides moving on to another chapter in my life, I sold all my nom nom for the reason that AI doesn't align with my values and I didn't know they were using AI software on the sample cards so It immediately didn't bring me joy having them anymore. As far as kickstarter the last 2 tcgs I supported had either been a disappointment or underwhelming, one of them snuck in AI which annoyed me and another's card print quality just wasn't it. But I still have love for nomnom verse artwork. I'll have to check back in 2 years to see how they're doing.
I most likely won't invest in this, unless the gameplay happens to be amazing. Looks like another cash grab type project. However, it's a kickstarter and they probably don't have money for a graphic designer. I get it. Some of the projects they pump a lot of money upfront into and they look pro right at the beginning but others look like trash and slowly grow into a finished product.
A good honest breakdown. I would say this, before backing anyone. Due your Du-dilegence. The great thing with Nom Nom, we know the 3 of the 4 people really well. Those of us who were in Metazoo at least. Also, just remember the current cards we have seen from Nom Nom, have all been designed around having a specific holo pattern. They finally chose one and it goes along with their video game RPG theme called, 8 bit. So the layout and colors will not be the same once the holo is introduced. They will be making changes if the UI doesn't work I was told. But that's a key element that typically differentiates samples from the final product. I am looking forward to this one. I also like they have already signed on Bryce Papenbrook for the main protagonist of their story. That is his voice in the small trailer on their KS. I think they have learned from Metazoos mistakes so they should avoid many issues. I hope...
Looks like a lot of good potential from what I’m hearing, but I do wish the Kickstarter page presented all of these positives a bit better. I understand developments are fluid and there is a Discord, but the Kickstarter page is the big pitch!
But I agree that this feels like an unfinished product; wish they were more artistic in their packaging & kickstarter design They blew the whole budget on the creature art lol
NomNom to me looks like it has literally zero shot to actually succeed after the kickstarter. I was a big fan of MetaZoo, and thought the original idea was pretty interesting, the card layout seemed solid, the artwork for me was awesome. The people who originally disliked MetaZoo and had the "pump and dump" thoughts, that's what I'm having for this project. I really like the artists that came from MetaZoo to here, but yea this is definitely not it, and I truly don't think it has even a 0.1% chance of actually succeeding. Edit: Also, the name is just unbearably bad. Couldn't they have thought of anything better than "NomNom verse"?
I don’t understand the name myself. It’s interesting to hear all the different takes on the game though, and it looks like people are at least in some ways seeing this as a kind of Zoo successor.
I respect your first point, its just your opinion on the aesthetic and composition. Your second point I disagree with, while printing in China is not necessarily bad, it certainly has a lot of down sides with the only positive being saving money. Printing cards in China is risky business because as we've seen time and time again, they have a widespread problem of stealing ideas/counterfeiting products. Ive seen many companies use China to make their product and then surprise! Theres a knock off version on aliexpress or temu a week later. Or how metazoo used chinese printers to save money and they stole the card files and theres now fakes circulating. There's also the fact that fulfillment and distribution will be much smoother, without all the problems that come with customs. Your third criticism seems nitpicky and confusing to me. Theyre saying that they used AI to rough draft the cards but the finished version wont have any AI elements. I assumed that was because AI is a very useful tool for artists to save time early on but they want a finished human product. Regardless of my disagreements, I alwats appreciate an honest take. Thanks for the vid, hope the game converts you when it releases! ;)
You beat me to it lol. I feel the same about a lot of this. The card design is straight up bad. Too many artistic cooks in the kitchen and the timing was perfect for people to jump from MZ to this
I do like a lot about it like the TCRPG idea and character art (I love that electric plug dino), but, yea, it lacks refinement in a lot of areas. But, hey, it’s Kickstarter, so maybe they can clean up a lot of things. I can’t back with how it’s all put together right now though.
I'm on their discord and have been following it. The gameplay looks decent. However they seem to be more worried about protecting speculators then players playing the game. They recently said that the KS will not be reprinted as a set. How is that going to work when new players come in?? They don't seem to have thought about in store play and getting people to play in person. If they get the game in lgs then I'll check it out. I don't think it will though. This is Metazoo lite and will likely die faster.
@FranklyCollecting yup, I was shocked. They said they may rebook at staple cards and the full set in the future but at this point there are no plans. Pretty hard to be interested in playing a game with a 5k print run and I'll need a 100+ card to play.
if they go all out on the playability and accessibility aspect of the game first, they would probably make it in the long run. if they go the scalpers oh this TCG would ROI 100X in the future route, it would be dead under 3 years at best. please be a TCG that don't panders to investor bros. and also, collect stuff if you like so it wouldn't hurt your wallet if it tanks and kills the products sustainability with over-scalping.
To me, the kickstarter page reminds me a lot of a manual from a snes game. Down to the composition, font, and colors. The cohesiveness point you make applies to the cards a lot. The chunky symbols, tacky text boxes etc do not work very well in my opinion. I like how the characters are in front of a borderline psychedelic background and it looks like a battle screen in an rpg. They should’ve used more plain looking text boxes instead of trying to make an in your face vintage game looking mess. Those golden box borders take up way too much space and don’t look good. They should’ve aimed for an Earthbound look with the boxes. Black box, white border, white text. Retro vibe with neutral tones/easier to make sense of
Yeah the card layout and name is a bit of a hang up However, hope they can turn this into something bigger, they been through a lot the past few years lol
Agreed. Good things throughout this, but it's not coming together yet IMO. I had to think a bit about whether Nomnom is one word (per their Kickstarter title) or two words (per their logo). The execution is just messy at the moment.

Hey Frank! Johnny Dunn here -- thanks for doing a video on NomNom Verse!! Glad to hear that overall you dig the game design and the champion/nomster art. I'd be happy to chat on a call sometime if you wanted to get some more defined answers to your questions, but if you don't mind I'll address a few briefly here: 1. overall KS design was def inspired by retro games and those pop color combos-- but also, it was all done by me, not Victor/the Art Team and it was my first landing page-- so that's on me. I'm in charge of gameplay and R&D, but the Art team is busy finishing up the set and the additions we were planning to add as stretch goals, so I handled this aspect myself. Agree I could learn to polish this more, but the Art team will be handling product design and promotions moving forward. 2. UI has been updated to create a cleaner and more coherent look. we're still utilizing some of the colors you were pointing at, but I think overall, it's a big improvement and we'll continue to make more improvements in the future. I think it's relatively common for TCG/Tabletop games to refine their look especially in the first couple years, as it becomes clear what the cards need and in what palettes. 3. What you said is correct, we only use AI in the design phase -- for instance, in alpha/beta testing we had AI landscapes for the Sector cards -- but all of those will change as the Art Team is drawing everything by hand. No AI in the final product. The reason for the emphasis is simply to stress that the artists are excited to bring their visions to life, and I wanted it to be clear that it's just a tool used occasionally in the design phase-- usually by me, actually, when I'm trying to imagine a card's general appearance before the art is completed by the team. But I figured it was best to be transparent about it. 4. Made in USA -- we originally were printing our product in China (Proto Packs Vol. 1 & 2), but a lot has changed overseas when it comes to tcg production -- hidden fees, delays, lack of QC and communication issues are happening more and more; also paper prices have skyrocketed. For these reasons we began searching for a US based printer to price things out and see if it made sense. We're very happy to have a solid relationship with our US Printers and the price difference is something we can afford without charging unfair prices, especially because it avoids customs in the US and the other problems listed above. I'm not sure why more games don't investigate this, tbh, it seems like a wise move. like i mentioned, happy to chat more if you'd like but-- thanks! I really appreciate you doing a video and giving some positive feedback as well as some critiques. I think the more people play the game, the more they'll see what we're aiming for with this project; giving tabletop gamers a new way to play cards, with a tip of the hat to the RPGs of our childhoods.

You're 100% correct and I didn't back it for the same reason. Being able to paint, draw or whatever doesn't make you an artist and while I really liked some of those characters, others had no depth what so ever and the lack of overall art direction was a real turnoff. Another thing, red is not a good color for a tcg, red is a food color and the yellow combination kills it when put into something like a tcg. Kryptik was made in North America and the quality was seriously lacking. Sorcery was something we all thought would be made in the U.S. but they made it in China and the quality was fantastic. Making a tcg in China has many more issues aside from quality but you're right, the Made in USA thing doesn't draw me into the game specifically.
The red and yellow against the black night-mode box plus that blue, white, red, yellow on the tier product images just aren’t coming together in an attractive way. It is like the art of the characters is just totally off from anything else visually in the game.
