    So I think you made this harder on yourself than you need. I just did it, on my back, under the truck, a standard length socket and a 6-inch extension. I guided the tip of the socket around the starter with my finger tip, and then it was easy to lock it on the bolt. From there, slow and gentle and I was able to get it out. The ratchet handle itself was between the starter and the engine mount.

    I did it yesterday, I got the top bolt out with a quarter inch ratchet, two inch extension, and the socket, came out easily.

    I hope there is a special place in hell for the engineers of this truck!

    Wtf was Ford thinkin’ here? I’ve done a few of these. Once I left that top bolt off permanently. Still running perfectly 🤷🏽‍♀️

    Just finished getting it out - I removed the solenoid and it allowed me to get my hand in there better - two bolts and the wire under the 13mm bolt on the solenoid. Hope that might help anyone.

    I’m doing mine now and had to step away before I took a match to the Ford lol. I can’t even find the bolt with my finger much less a socket

    My 2013 5.0 was not possible with a 6 inch extension. A 3 inch and deep socket was not long enough, 6 inch + standard socket was too long- could not get the ratchet on. I ended up sacrificing a 6 inch extension with an angle grinder and fabricating a 5-1/2 inch extension. I will sell it to you for $50 if you need it. I hope never to do this job again

    Definitely the "hard way".
    I'm doing one this week, and I'm so glad it's easier from underneath, with the CORRECT length of extensions.. Just might record this...
    Thanks for the alternative method!

    Well this good idea but Ford did make easier way and there's a space between exhaust header all u need is 3/8 drive ratchet connected to 10" extension wobble 13mm deep socket I didn't figure it out until I was putting it back in but it went in like a dream hope that helps y'all 🤔🤙

    On my 2001 F150 top bolt not too bad -used 2-3 inch wobbles and 1-10 inch wobbles on my 3/8 ratchet

    Yep don’t need to do any of this crap. I used a 3/8 ratchet with a 3” extension. Just unplug the wire that’s in the way and you’re good to go. It’s tight but completely doable

    Glad to see a different method but Mines not a 4x4 so that extra clearance above the frame isn’t there. Most people can get it from underneath with a 6” extension and regular socket 3/8 drive. I cant, my biggest clearance is 1/2” on the side of the starter. You couldn’t lay even the tip of one skinny long finger on that bolt. Been stabbing it with a socket trying to get lucky but have no idea if I even touched the bolt in the 1.5hrs of trying. Fk these Fords. If I wanted this struggle I’d be driving a chevy. Ive never owned one in 35 years but worked on them enough to know that this kind of engineering is what to expect. At this point an American gasoline truck difference is just cosmetic. Hey lets face all the electrical connections facing forward right behind the wheel with the small bolts and wires and the solenoid. That a GM move if I ever seen it. Fk these Fords and the engineers who design them.
    Update, take the 2 easy ones out, pry the damn thing off, breaking the ear on the starter. remove the last bolt and remaining piece, tape a small socket & 6 inch extension to the top of the new starter with the bolt partly in the hole, set the new starter up and attach ratchet to extension and run it in.
    That was my plan and should work for 99% of you. for me I was vindicated when the starter wouldn't slide into place because the extension was hitting the bolt that held the motor mount. There was NO way you can remove my starter without removing the motor mount!!! maybe the mount is worn out... but is measures the same as the other side. Fk Ford!

    I'm not the only one struggling with the fucking top bolt, just lost a top tooth 1 hour ago

    • @indykurt
      @indykurt 2 роки тому

      Did you end up paying someone? At this point if I would have lost a tooth over this piece of crap engineering, I wouldn’t have a truck to work on, like it would be a basket case only good for parts, the ones I didnt break.

      @@indykurt i found if i use two 3/8 mimi extensions one to feel the top with my fingers then insert the other mini extension i was finally able to put in top bolt. The long extension was useless

    • @indykurt
      @indykurt 2 роки тому +3

      @@helencoe7839 I seen that tip from a channel. I found that if you take the 2 out, you can easily break the top ear on the starter then take the top out. You'll have to eat the $15 return core. My motor mount must be wore out because I taped the socket&extension and bolt on top of the starter, then it wouldn't go up in the hole, it was rolling on the extension. There was zero access to that top bolt, the extension was hitting the motor mount stud in the block. I put it back with 2 bolts and it works fine for now
