Excellent video! 😄👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I enjoyed how you showed the knapsack's practical applications, including thought-out things like tent stakes and dishes (thus making room for food in your haversack), rather than reciting a list of period regulations and packing by a manual's dry dictation. Well done! 😄👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Not bad. I present mid war when, by that point, many knapsacks were discarded in favor of a blanket roll and a few personal and camp items rolled within, or crammed into odd corners of the haversack.
But, for an original issue overview, very good.
I eat most of my 3 days march rations before I even fall in for a march, so not much to fit into a haversack.
Pretty much just coffee and hardtack, a little cooked salt pork, on the march along with what I can forage ... I mean " farm", lol.
Good presentation. Stay with the hobby. Hope you make many reenactments.
Those who fail to study history, are doomed to repeat it.

Some great ideas for show-and-tell. I received my knapsack today and have got some ideas, along with yours about what to pack.

That is quite an interesting video, but I consider myself far superior than my younger brother double bag. I am much more stylish in many of way, and I provide comfort and easy packing. My cousin across the pound, Isaac Campbell has too many straps, my other strange cousin from Virginia pace, has horrible wood inserts. Just admit it Yankee... ☝🏻😌 Single bag superior bag.

A great presentation, comprehensive and fully period correct. We need more living historians such as yourself. I really appreciate it thank you.
    Keep up the great work!!
PS was the chess board your gum blanket a thing back then?

Thanks for the comment. To answer your question yes, I have seen pictures of chess boards on the gum blankets most notably on 'Civil War Digital Digest" when they where discussing soldiers games you can see it in one of the photos they display in their video.

Great video! I thought it was pretty cool how you have what looked like a chess / checkers board stenciled on the canvas side of the gum blanket. Is this something that was commonly done?

Yes. depending on who was your commanding officer was gambling could be forbidden so alternatives like chess/checkers or dominions where popular. Drawing a chess or checkers board with charcoal was great way to quickly make a platform for a game and was an added bonus because you didn't have yet another thing to carry around in your knapsack.

@@cascademen9456 I play dominoes and have an original set made in 1865 that I picked up on eBay. The box was in rough condition but the bones are in great shape for their age. I carry an I&C pack with similar items in it. I haven't taken a march in it yet, just got it from Missouri boot and shoe early this year. I hope you'll do more videos, they help young fresh fish and Veteran living historians.
