      Asagi's Life. We meet again Asagi. Hmm you say you have an average income but do you work overtime? Is it paid? Here in the US overtime is required by law to be paid 1.5 times your normal pay rate. But in Mexico where I used to work as an English teacher I put in full time hours for a part time job and received no overtime pay :/ to receive overtime pay in a job it had to be written into my contract in Mexico.

    Man, I always end up feeling kind of depressed when I look at these sorts of numbers from developed countries... making the conversion, the median salary in my beautiful country of Colombia **cringes** roughly equates to $6000 USD... A YEAR. Of course, cost of living is accordingly low so we can get by just fine, but our purchasing power for pretty much anything but rent and groceries is basically nil. :|

      Andrés Cifuentes how much you think developed countries earn a year

    • @Klefth

      Random Guy About 5 to 10 times as much? I always see figures around 30k to 60k+ floating around for NA, western europe and other developed "first world" countries whereas out here, people my age tend to make around 1.5 to 1.7m colombian pesos a month, which translates to 500 to 570 USD/month or around $6000 a year. After rent, groceries, and bills, let's say we're left with $100 to $150 left to spend. Not only that, but since most products here are imported and just converted from USD a lot of the time (often costing WAY more than in the US even), that spending money doesn't last much, lol. It kinda sucks.

    • @faith-ei9bv

      Andrés Cifuentes what countries are Western Europe

    • @Klefth

      Portugal, Spain, France, Ireland, the UK, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Italy, Greece, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, and Turkey. That's at least according to the UN. After looking it up for a bit, only a handful of those states fall beneath 30k a year. So yeah, I think I'm not that far off calling it at least 5 times higher as far as averages go.

    Yuta, I recently came from a vacation in Japan. I had a great time! You seem to be very honest. Can you do a video talking about all the "dirty laundry" about Japan. Most anime fans here seem to think Japan has no flaws or its perfect. I'd love to hear about the corruption and other things swept under the rug there. I love your Channel keep up the good work!!!

      Yuta, I stayed in Japan for a week. Tokyo, Nara and Sin Osaka. I did not have one problem with crime or con artist. People kept to themselves or were very friendly.
      There were JAPANESE only bars and restaurants in Tokyo. Usually no sign on the entrance with a very broad Japanese guy guarding the door. I also noticed that Husband and wife do not seem to spend much time together. The two sexes seem to live separate lives. gambling and Alcohol seems to be as much a problem in Japan as the rest of the world.
      For the most part Japan seems to be a very safe and clean place.

    Woooooowww. You guys earn a ton of money!
    Even the lowest value of that diagram you showed is still near the DOUBLE of avarange income in Hungary (my country). 😮
    But in a household we don't spend nowhere near as MUCH money of that avarange of this video. We would die if we would spend ¥280.000 per month.
    In that "fertility rate" diagram we are only 5 places above Japan. Allmost the same value.

    One thing I've been wondering about regarding Japan and the working culture is; if most women stop working after getting married, why do they even try to get good grades in school? Wouldn't simply learning household economy be enough? After all, just knowing household economy is enough to work at a store, even a kid has the ability, but maybe not the responsibility to do that.

    • @CottidaeSEA
      @CottidaeSEA 6 років тому +10

      Sarcasm received. I'm legitimately curious though. I'm not saying women shouldn't go to school, nor that they shouldn't try to get good grades, but if most of them just end up being housewives, that kind of feels like wasted effort.

    • @CottidaeSEA
      @CottidaeSEA 6 років тому

      That's why I'm talking about the working culture, if we assume that they don't want to be housewives, why would so many women be housewives? I get trying your best, but while the trend does show that more women work compared to previously, it still isn't rising overly fast.

    • @LittleLulubee
      @LittleLulubee 6 років тому +4

      I think it's because society expects that from them. Unless you're dropping out and learning a trade or something, it's just part of the socially accepted life trajectory to go to college. To show that you're doing the right, proper thing. And of course, anything you do in life you should do your best. It was the same for women in the US back in the 60's or whenever. A lot of them knew they just wanted to be housewives, but part of showing that they were a good citizen was getting a college degree.

    • @missoccurs

      Traditionally the mother is responsible for the kid's education and managing the entirety of the family's finances, so it's important she be well-educated. I worked at a top level private girl's school that still included the phrase "good wives, wise mothers" in its promotional materials. Men here seem to want an educated wife, just not an ambitious or too clever one. ;)

    • @ThatJapaneseManYuta
      @ThatJapaneseManYuta  6 років тому +26

      Werewolf211 That's actually a good question. One thing that many Japanese girls say is that they do want to work UNTIL they get married. So education is necessary to get a good job even though they might want to quit later on.

    In Russia, we just count average salary and then show it on the TV like, oh, Russian people do pretty well, at least we've got smaller taxes than in poor Europe. There're, of course, some moments worth to be mentioned. Firstly, an average salary in Russia is around 35000 RUB per month, or 600 USD per month. You see, even this is not too much. However, a median income in Russia is, of course, lower - about 21000 RUB or 360 USD per month (or 4320 USD annually).
    Secondly, the taxes. We've got an income tax of 13% and value-added tax (probably the worst tax I've ever seen) of 18%, but we've also got compulsory social contributions of ~30% from the wage, so if I get the median wage of 21000, my boss pays for me 27300, and nobody actually tells me that I could get $455 instead of $360 and not be able to get Africa-like medical help and 133 USD pension when I'm 60 (If I'm male). By the way, average male life expectancy in Russia is 67.5 years.

    Pretty good salaries considering all Japanese people don't have to study in university (same as in China and South Korea). Making 3000 USD/month without having any skills is pretty good, that's better than Europe and US where people with no skills can't make 3000 USD/month. We actually have to study really hard in university to make 3000 USD/month......life is unfair. I'm making that as a programmer in Sweden and I had to study 12 hours/day for 3 years in university, and I even got student debts. Then I see Japanese people who partied and had fun for 4 years in university making the same as me pushing papers in some random office, having no skills! Oh my god...........

    I would like to visit Japan. Looking at his videos their streets are busy just like in India. Even at 10 PM night and as late as 1 AM morning in India people are out eating and shopping. In India they start work late at 8-9 AM Mostly. There is no activity out in the streets in USA late ar night.
    In India , looks like Japan people have a lot of time to go out and shop. USA retail is almost dead here, because of Amazon, and social life not good like India. In India you can step out of your house and buy Samosa, Egg Rolls or Chicken Rolls for just a 10 cents and dollar respectively. You just walk 50 yards and get a vendor cooking for you. America had McDonald's which is way too expensive and food is not healthy.

    It makes me sick to read some people complaining and moaning about this. Imagine to earn 40-45% less than those averages working basically the same amount of hours and with equal rent, bills, foods and clothing expenses (and even more taxes!). That´s what happens in countries like Spain, so Japan it´s still a dreamland for people like me.

    We just moved here in Japan, and our house rent is ¥430,000 per month, Utilities (electric, gas, water, phone, etc.) ¥100,000 - ¥130,000. They told us they charge foreigner more in house rent and I think that is unfair.

      @ I pay for my rent we moved out and found a cheaper 5 bedroom house to middle class neighborhood. My Japanese neighbor asked me how much I’m paying I told her ¥380,000. She was surprised but didn’t say anything. We are paying less this time even in utilities bills. Our first rental house were bigger and has a great ocean view. Almost half of my salary goes to rent and utilities. My company pays me well so I do not mind.

    Interesting video. Yuta, so my question is, do Japanese people not have kids because they are responsible enough to know they can't afford them, or do they not have kids because they know the state, or taxpayer wont subsidize their lives? In the USA and many western countries for example, you got a single mother household epidemic, and it's mainly become so huge because the US government became a welfare state starting the 1960's and has funded those single mothers via welfare, tax credits, food stamps, and section 8 housing ever since. In other words, the US government has become a sugar daddy to them. Otherwise, with no welfare state, there would be less irresponsible people having so many kids.

    Again it depends on what's your profession and how much you earn. Like, a doctor or an engineer earns much more than an average salary man. Heck I heard that doctors earn more than 800k yen per month and that's enough.

    Having spent quite some time in Japan the past few years, I'm surprised how little money Japanese make on average. Myself coming from a very high-cost of living country and making a lot more money than the median shown here, I do not find Japan particularly cheap at all. I'm sure there are ways to live very cheap, but going into super markets many things are far more expensive than where I live. It must be really hard to get by for a lot of people.

    @Japanese man Yuta - i dissagree about children part, look at any country that are poor and they are making babies left and right, multiple times more then rich countries.
    The difference is that rich countries where women are pushed or are chosing to go in workforce, they fall for thriving for money over making a family and letting man take care of it.

    Mm. More or less what I imagined. Japanese have very high salaries by Spanish standards, like between France and Germany. I am in my late thirties and don't earn as much as young Japanese just starting out.
    On the other hand I think Spanish women are much more willing to work and less of them are expecting to receive an income only from their husbands, though I'm sure most of them still expect the husband should earn more than they do. Not anyone I would ever marry, though, even if I made more money.

    I personally don't think fertility rate is an economic problem. Here in Germany we have the same birth rate problems. My parents generation had (I estimate) 1-2 children. Meanwhile, my grandparents had 5 or more children. However, my grandparents were not rich people or anything. Nowadays we have a much higher standard of living.

    Yuta, things are similar here in the U.S., having children is expensive, and both parents usually work. But there are still a lot of women that quit working when they have their children. As the children get older, they get part time jobs. Then there's the pay inequality, men usually make more than the women.

    I have a question Mr. Yuta:
    Tokyo is the most expensive area to live in Japan by a large amount, right? Wouldn't that then make everywhere else in Japan a much more reasonable place to build a family, or do you gain less as a result of not working in Tokyo (so it's all the same anyway)?
    P.S. If you have some statistics for the Sapporo region, I'd be grateful if you could tell them here.
    Thank you in advance, Mr Yuta.

    Thanks for this video. Nice chart. Besides the economics of starting a family and raising children, I wonder how the low fertility rate is affecting your, I'm not sure what to call them, but for lack of a better phrase, social insurance programs. In the US schemes like Social Security are pay as you go, ie today's workers are paying now for the elderly and disabled in the hope that the next generation will pay for today's workers when they leave the work force, even as our fertility rate is less than two. Is this kind of thing a concern in Japan? Or are your social insurance programs on a more rational footing?

    Hi Yuta, Can you make a video on "salarymen"? I'm wondering if this lifestyle is related to the fact that many women don't work after having children, meaning there are more salarymen as they need to earn enough to support their single-income families. If not, why do salarymen exist?
