- We have not been able to sleep. Not been able to eat. We can barely speak these days. Our entire thoughts consumed by Polin.
Okay, so that speaking bit is a lie. Because, old friends (and very good acquaintances), it’s time to leave the drawing-room window, clear our bottle-weary heads and battle it out over Season 3 Part 1.
We’ll be slipping into studies to caress a pirate’s coat, sprawling ourselves over the yellow sheets of a very Pensive man and following a redhead into checks notes tents, gardens, ballrooms, trees and carriages.
And as our oldest friends face being crushed on a picnic blanket by slow-moving-basket and being crushed under a willow tree by a fast-moving-friendzoning, we finally get the long-awaited answer as to which Mayfair family will have that carriage cleaning bill dropping on their doorstep.
Thank God for Great Aunt Petunia, eh?

And what I loved about their first kiss was not just how shook he was by the passion of it & the connection he felt.. but also in the way that she ran from him. She was ethereal.. & so heartbreakingly vulnerable & real with him.. that one got the sense that he knew in that moment just how special she was. She pierced his heart. I thought that scene was sublime. x
I know it's the Polin podcast, but I have to make a What a Fron comment... You guys saying that silence will be too much for Fran after John dies and that Michael will bring loudness back into her life is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. Now I need it on the show.
I love how Pen's awkward attempt at flirting and even talking to the suitors at the Ball is somewhat echoed in the Willow tree scene. Except that this time it's both Pen and Colin being awkward 😄 It's so cute.
It hadnt occurred to me that Colin is the only one till now to have a friends-to-lovers and an enemies-to-lovers arc and with the same person, till you guys brought it up. 😳💓
With the brothel scenes.. I think they wanted to show the contrast of Colin, pre-Pen, and Colin, post-her kiss. The 2nd brothel scene, was just Colin trying to assuage his jealousy.. his pain.. and even then, he couldn't stomach it. His heart is with Pen. 😋LOOOVED the podcast as always, ladies! x
10/10 about that contrast. Both those scenes are set earlier in the same episodes where he has an intimate moment with Pen. And the contrast is night and day. The tenderness, intimacy, feeling and investment are different.
I though of the 2nd scene as him trying to get back to his life and routine now that Debling has made his interest official with the dance. To prove to himself that it's a passing infatuation he can get out his system and failing miserably. So I'll tolerate it grudgingly😅
@@world_through_my_smudgy_lenses Well said! I found the first scene painful to watch.. because it was just not him. A lost man who is trying SO hard to fit in & putting on airs. All of it, meaningless to him. But the 2nd visit.. it was a total reactionary thing to his seeing Pen in the mirror with Debling. It was interesting to watch how he gauged his next decision based on her not looking his way. Fans also have to remember.. that at this point he thinks he's alone in his feelings and that she doesn't care for him. It was totally a pain-based decision going to the brothel. I look forward to Part II.. because we're going to see a Colin that falls deeper still, in love... a man who is going to fully see Pen in all her brilliance. He'll be furious at first.. but I think he will eventually be in awe of her. x
I think in the second brothel scene Colin wants to feel like he just has sort of an infatuation towards Pen and he can out-kiss her. But that is not true as he struggles to find the heart to kiss anyone but her.
yes that's how i felt. there was no satiation without her touch and her love gahhh. i was on board for the brothel scenes and i am a total Colin person, keep it pure keep the seedyness away from me, keep the innocence, but I think it told the story perfectly. plus he was lookin like a sexy beast. i think we were meant to feel those particular pangs that he might loose himself, that we might loose him, that we too are rejected and have to be harder and lonelier in this world. but the catharsis is their self acceptance, their love saves both of them The depiction of tenderness interwoven with truth and courage and how its integral to plot, i found it felt almost radical for this present moment in the culture (which is ridiculous) it was just so perfect, I love these characters.

The great auk , the bird that debbling is trying to save was a penguin relative with a longer curved beak. And it did live up north near the arctic. But debbling didn't succeed, the great auk went extinct a few decades later. And now we have no more penguinish birds in the arctic.

My favorite scene is when they’re at the ball in episode two and Penelope is talking about how the person that she was talking to horse died and it’s just her and Colin end up laughing about it. I just think it’s so cute and just is very much the essence of their relationship.
This is my second favorite, right after the market scene where they talk about their first meeting and flirt back and forth (even if they don't realize they're flirting)
Never in my wildest fantasy I thought Pen always sits on her drawing room window(S1&S2) because of Colin. That part gagged me so bad when Debling said that.

Took a dive into that waist coat Colin wears in E1 after you said it held hints. Blue flowers represent 'peace, tranquility and serenity. They look like corn flowers and represent happiness. Red represents passion and yellow friendship. It you see a combination of yellow with red or orange tips that means you are moving from friendship into love. I think there is a red and blue bird... that is a love bird.
Not to go too far down the rabbit hole...lol...but cornflower also represents life and fertility.😂

Also the audio version implies the reason penelope doesn't run away from the balloon straight away is because she is fixated on colin pulling the rope and not realizing her life is in danger. I love Bridgerton xD

When you started talking about Beans predicting abilities for ep 3, I thought you were going to talk about the fact that she predicted that Debling would compare Pen to a stag head!!! My jaw dropped when he did 😮

Yeah, I’m glad you brought up the missed opportunity of the hot air balloon scene. I think (aside from the unnecessary brothel scenes) this was the one section of the show where I was truly disappointed and felt like it was a such a big set-up that ended up being a huge missed opportunity. Oh well.
I noticed that in the first episode of this season at around 22:35 Colin says "a man cannot tell his secrets" and in response Eloise says "must be lonely". I found it an interesting parallel to when in episode 4 he asks the other men if they find it lonely to withhold these experiences. I love that although Colin kept trying to be this other person for all of Part 1, what Eloise says sticks with him so strongly and that it comes from her. 😊 Love the podcast!

As a Swiftie Polinator I feel the need to qualify that Snow on the Beach deserves more love/is a much better choice than Happier than Ever for the context/setup of Polin’s love story as a whole. I don’t quite agree that it’s about ‘finding love again’.
During the Midnights promo (Midnights mayhem), Taylor explains, “The song is about falling in love with someone at the same time as they’re falling in love with you, sort of in this sort of cataclysmic, fated moment where you realize someone feels exactly the same way that you feel, 'Wait, is this real? Is this a dream?' Kind of like it would be if you were to see snow falling on a beach."
The fact that the opening for the song is ‘one night a few moons ago’, having the line ‘flying in a dream’ in the chorus and the bridge ‘I can’t speak, afraid to jinx it. I don’t even dare to wish it’ makes me feel it ties so nicely to the carriage scene where they try to articulate the reciprocity of their feelings for each other. I couldn’t have picked a better song for Polin in that moment and I mean no disrespect to Billie but Happier than Ever is a sad song in my opinion and it was a good call for them to use Snow on the Beach instead.

Luke did do an amazing job researching Colin. He really knows the character and how to portray.
One thing I noticed was in the tree scene, when they are cute at that akward moment after the kiss: when Colin is left alone, there are purple flowers next to the river, which means the blossoming of first love.
I'm so glad we all had the same reaction on the Colin make out scene. I had to pause that too 😅 and also on the first kiss 😂 love that
And I know it sounds so weird but the way you guys described the carriage scene was so beautiful it made me cry 😅

4 months is 122 days divided by 17 is ca. 7 days. But I figure that might take between half a day to 2 days max to travel between city's. It's still a lot. but I don't think it's impossible.

With the audio description on, in the hand cut scene, it says that after wrapping his hand "she allows her bare hand to linger on his. He curls his fingers inwards, softly enfolding hers.". Colin holds her hand!
Was I the only one who paused the scene when Penelope takes Debling’s hand, just to read her dance card? I thought it was interesting that the camera lingered not only on their hands but also afforded the view of the card where you can see who reserved what dance. I don’t see that Debling’s name is written on it, which to me means that Colin ALSO noticed this and that Debling pulled her away from him ON PURPOSE, adding so much more nuance to the exchanged glances between the two men. To twist the knife in his heart deeper, after noticing this, you can only imagine how Colin might interpret Penelope’s actions of going along with Debling’s lie about having a reserved dance with her and essentially still choosing Debling over him when she could have very easily called him out on it or denied him since he hadn’t reserved a dance yet.
Love your podcast! I went back to watch some scenes from your perspectives, you all have such great insights! I agree that Nicola and Luke did such an amazing job with these characters. And Luke’s extras were so perfect. I don’t know if anyone noticed with the kiss in the garden, but I had headphones on and after the first kiss when they pull apart, Colin has an audible intake of breath like he immediately feels the spark, and that’s why he goes in for more. It’s just so perfectly acted.

Where I disagree with yall is on the second brothel scene. In that scene we really see Colin shift into a more grounded position in his feelings for his new facade.Throughout that scene Colin shows how being a rake truly wasn’t for him and solidifies that he does need the romance/connection.That’s why he doesn’t continue on with the girls after kissing because it didn’t feel right to him and pans to him in deep thought . But I totally understand not being a fan of the brothel scenes.
Was thinking about the parrot in the opening scene , when Colin is leaving the ship, in Hinduism, Kama is the god of love, he always rides on a parrot and like aros, he has a bow and arrow, which he shouts into hearts , to open their hearts to falling in love. His arrow tops are made of flowers, parrots in Hinduism represent passion, love, and transformation through love.

I sooo hope that at some point (either in S3 part 2 or a future season), that Pen's emerald green hair clip is found among Colin's things. As if following Pen's exit from Colin in 'Goodnight, Mr. Bridgerton' scene, he subconsciously just HAD to pick it up and keep it and he placed it maybe in the same box/drawer as he has kept her letters.
Look at Hyacinth seeing/knowing what's what with her older sibs and their love interests before the older sibs often know themselves fully! Also, an Emmy should go to Bridgerton for Bridgerton Breaths/Breathing!!!! OMG....!!!!🔥

It's just like when Colin wanted to give Eloise the book he bought for her, but she says she's reading Emma.
It's a display of how Eloise isn't really being herself rn because she's hurt of what's happened. "I got tired of fighting so I just joined the winning side". She is only fully open to Cressida when at the final dance, who isnt really paying attention.

Colin himself (in the market scene and under the willow tree) looking like a prince with hair that looks horrible to me, but just like a Disney version of a prince (I like his more natural look with the curl)
Going down the stairs in ep 2 after it was revealed that Colin helped her (when Colin and Eloise are chasing her) and he can't get her on time (all that's missing is that she left a shoe on the stairs)
The carriage (and the dress worn in the carriage scene, really Disney)
According to the trailer for part 2 - the ultimatum that Eloise gives her to tell Colin the truth that is going to expire at midnight (and then assuming that she is afraid that Colin will not accept and will not face the truth very well) all her happiness is going to fade away and she is going to return to her difficult life with her difficult family, without the prince, etc.
And of course the ending we haven't seen yet - and they lived happily ever after, etc.

recently discovered this podcast. I absolutely LOVE this, sharing the same thoughts and feelings for all the Polin moment. Luke and Nicola did such an incredible job! I felt this so much!
He nods but also, he is LICKING HIS TEETH, he ate but he is still hungry. He is so proud and satisfied and confident and happy. All of it!!!!
Maybe it’s 17 cities if he count the towns that were rest stops? Like me saying I’ve been to Iowa but really we just stopped at a gas station or stayed overnight at a motel.
Anyone else clock that he says he has spent "so long, trying to feel less" and connect that to his behaviour even before the kiss? He says he's wanted to tell her all of this for weeks, but not that it has only been happening for weeks. I think part of his second trip was to get him away from everyone to clear his head because he was already having these thoughts and feelings about Penelope even then. I think he worried that maybe the guys and his brothers wrre right and his mess with Mrina was because he didn't screw around (and needed to). I bet he was afraid that his mind was substituting Penelope because she was the girl he knew rather than for her own sake and that he would do or say something he shouldn't because he was lonely and she was close and that it might ruin this important relationship and hurt her. He needed to "truly know himself before stepping back in" to her orbit. That way, he would know for sure if it was Penelope he wanted, or if truly anyone would do. It would explain why he went to the lengths he did to be sure a lack of experience wasn't the problem. Imagine if he went after Penelope only to figure out afterward that he had confused sex with love. He might ruin her and trash his best friend's life and his own in the process. No, a little bit of experience settled that question perfectly without hurting anyone. He was more satisfied by one kiss from Penelope than any other sexual encounter in the all those months away or the couple of interludes we saw this season. He even tried threesomes (and likely other things in Paris) to be absolutely certain he wasn't unmoved because of some kink. Nope, he's a one woman man and no one but Penelope can satisfy the needs he feels because he only really feels for her. I think his drinking is his tell. Every time the guy drinks, it's to dull those feelings for her and stop him from just grabbing her and ... well, you know.

I really hope you keep the podcast going! Please keep finding crumbs! Please keep rewatching. Please keep this going! I came for Polin but I'm staying because I love you guys and your friendship.
When he says if you were going to make me say it out loud, I miss you. I was gagged. With that told me was that he has missed her over this last trip, but also many times in his life, but he was never made to say it out loud. I think he missed her back so this was a special type of miss. But the fact that he could think that he would not have to say it out loud is very interesting.
I'll admit, I was a bit disappointed on my first watch for a few reasons that I won't get into here -- really, mostly annoyed like everyone that it's split in two because I think it did a disservice to the season. However, I just rewatched it for a second time and I am starting to appreciate it a lot more. I still have a couple of nitpicks (cameras cutting away from characters too early, for example), but I'm definitely not as frustrated about certain things anymore. With all that being said, I am LOVING seeing Polin together -- and of course, the first kiss and carriage scenes were *chef's kiss* incredible. And now that I've listened to y'all, I need to do another rewatch. So many good points were brought up that may change how I view more of it!
What I like about snow on the beach is that it's supposed to be a surreal unbelievable experience and feeling that is too good to be true and literally "weird but F* beautiful" and don't we believe that Colin could feel that the thoughts feelings energy about his journey to find her is "weird and beautiful"
There we so many little moments in part 1 that I love re-watching like:
- Ben's "right" when Colin excuses himself to meet Pen in the sweets tent
- The physical comedy between Eloise and Colin when he walks in and catches her reading Lady Whistledown in the foyer
- Colin sneaking a look at Pen in the mirror at the library
- How Pen's lips were quivering while she was waiting for Colin to ask his question (before Debling claimed his dance with her)... girl, I thought he was going to kiss you right there in front of everyone too!
- Fran's quick little "I am" before she rushes off brazenly greet John in the street
- Almost anything Hyacinth does/says
Honorable mentions to
- Dankworth's quip to Prudence as they enter the fair about being enormous and ready to fly at a moment's notice.
Things I did not care for
- Any of Colin's brothel scenes: his cringe flirting with anything in a skirt was bad enough but the whoring decreased my enjoyment of the season
- Lord Remington not keeping how word/not calling on Pen because of the gossip about Colin helping her find a husband
- How Eloise and Debling ran off to save themselves, leaving Pen behind... that works for Colin's story line but not their character
I loved that there were folks who appreciated the value of LW (after re-watching 2-8, El's fight with Pen was so viscous, it's refreshing to see at least a little positive allure to the scandal sheet)!
Loved the podcast!! Hilarious! 👏👏👏
Favourite scene was under the willow. It seems to have so little attention online but its achingly sweet. 🥰
Also as a side I think Gregorys broken arm was a piss take on Claudia being a wally on set.

1:48:16 Ladies, when your conversation about Colin being thoughtful and distracted when touching his hand in his study … and the sneak scene photo is left on the cutting room floor … here he is in this scene, distracted and doing a self-soothing action or rubbing his formally injured hand while expressing his true views and true self to his “friends”. He struggles to even stay active in the conversation until he is overcome to share the thought Pen, well, her taking over his thoughts and finding the only words that can translate his true wants, want of her. It is like Colin is in a formal school debate and he is standing by his argument, but three against one means his loss. He is then left holding his injury with the mental fight of wanting to return to when he wasn’t alone, was cared for, and especially cared about. Subtle, but evident. ❤🐝🦋

Here's my take on the first kiss: I think the writers wanted us to feel that Pen wanted Colin's kiss, not just any kiss. She wanted to feel what it would be like to be his, even if it is only her fantasy. I think Colin wanted to kiss her (benefit of having read the book) but he would not kiss her if he wasn't down for it. At least from the hand cut scene he was actively thinking about her. His use of her full name "Penelope" was all the sign that he was taking her seriously. His reactions to her request is surprise for her "rather direct" ask but also a deep desire and curiosity that makes him hesitate because it's Pen. He didn't get much time to think and he was not able to think. Those steps toward her, he wanted to make it special for her and I think he was hoping he would enjoy it. I think what stunned him was how much he did enjoy it.
The willow tree scene is my favorite i love how when pen apologizes for the kiss , the way colin says "do NOT apologize.." he sounds flirtatious its so sweet

Another missed opportunity was not having an interaction between Benedict and Colin like we had with Daphne and Anthony last season of Benedict just calling him out for always sneaking out to see Penelope like dude what’s going on there and that would have been amazing to have both Eloise and Benedict picking up on his feelings for Pen like in the balloon scene where she signals him or afterwards.
and the moment between the two of them after Colin saved the balloon and Debling saved Pen that look between the two of them should have lingered so much!! you have no idea.
And I wanted to see the two of them proper dancing as friends before the carriage scene like an ep 2 kinda thing, like let’s hop on the dancefloor to have fun and show youre on the market but also foreshadowing the dance interruption, i know it’s a lot but just like Pen I wanted so much more 😂
I think Debling's response after Cressida dance was perfect in that it was completely devoid of feeling and empathy. I mean, he just told Pen that he is so in love with his animals and travel that he doubts there would be any room for any other kind of love. This tells me that he's never been in love with a human being. He doesn't find any need for it in his life. He is going to be closed off to it. The fact that Pen is even asking about this, I think makes him a little closed off to her even before the Colin interruption. Think about it he's saying I'm happy you have other interests and you look beautiful, like he's trying to offer her a compliment, but what's the use of beauty if you don't believe in love? Is she beautiful like his birds? Or is he mechanically thinking? Yes you're supposed to complement a woman's beauty. I'm rambling, but I guess the bottom line is Debling is very black and white in his needs. he wants things easy for him and simple for him or he doesn't want them at all. He only wanted Pen because he thought her to be easy and simple, that she would not create any problems for him so that he could be completely free to live his life. He did not like the obligations of society wanted somebody else to do all that work. Of course, any suitor would not want to marry someone who is affections were elsewhere. But with Debling, it was not that he could love her one day. it was if you can't do this I don't want you. He had zero interest in conversation or fighting for her in any way which just makes the decision that much easier to toss out Debling as an option.

Imagine Pen supporting Colin with Mondrich’s situation like writing something as LW to catch people’s or the qeen’s attention. She already done it once with M’Delacroix’s business, it will be beautiful 🤩 than when LW reveals herself, Mondrich would realize that was because of Lord and Lady Wistledown (I JUST WANT COLIN TO DO SOMETHING AS Lord W) 🤭🤭

I heard a rumor we get another one. But who knows if that is reliable.
My fiance and i have been waiting for this for months and we were holding eachother the whole season every clip of polin we were holding onto eachother hahaha because it was so beautiful and emotional to see them.
I find it interesting that in the brothel scene, Colin says he is late for an appointment. But then is standing around waiting for Pen, clearly early for his appointment.
