My lead guitarist from many years ago played a jazz exactly like that one. He was an expert with the Rhythm switches. May he RIP. Miss you Skip.
RIP SKIP
💜🙏Rest in Absolute Peace, Skipp😇
Rip to THE jazzmaster skip
Rest In Peace
R.I.P. Skip
Well played, as ever! Lovely to see a gorgeous old example of a Jazzmaster, especially with the sad news of Tom Verlaine's passing RIP x
He really was the reason why we started playing jazzmasters and jags
You found a Soul Piercer, it drills into the heart and spine then soaks into the mind.
Thanks for producing and sharing this video with us.
It makes me happy just to know such things not only exist but still do.
Also, it's nice that you share your first impressions of an instrument with us because that's when it first starts speaking to you - the best thing about a new to me instrument is the places it drags me to if it has grabbed me by the gut.
You know you're in the home of a dedicated guitarist when sound deadening material is what constitutes wall art! ;-)
2:27 Actually Matt the first in '58 and early 59 like the Strats and Teles were maple necks. Here is the third Jazzmaster off the production line in '58 with a mapleneck owned by Freddie Tavarez and sold to Norm in '89 for sale for $100k USD is still up on reverb as a past sold.
Jazzmasters are a joke compared to Strat. Inferior in all respects. Looks ... fugly vs Sexy and Stratospheric, functionality the Strat trem is miles better than the JMs. PIckups and tones are better on a Strat also. Why bother unless you get a vintage one cheap? Only an idiot would make such a fugly bad design in the 21st century.
I never tire of seeing your amazing finds - and of course, hearing your much appreciated playing!! Thank you for the share, Matthew!!
Jazzmaster!! The favorite guitar of one of my favorite players, Michael Lemmo! He swears by these babies, and the tone tells you why! Great pickup, Matthew!! Play on!!
Yeah, Lemmo's great, isn't he?!?!
Lol I thought this guy was lemmo for the first few videos
He’s the reason I bought mine
@@jefffree3053 ha!
I think the "lead" circuit is a bit of eq and tone shaping, like having a rudimentary effects onboard. Leo also made an OMG circuit in the G&L days that also mystifies a lot of people but when people use it, it sounds distinctive but still nicely fits in where it was.
Yet another brilliant video from you, Matthew. In fact you just keep getting better and better. Every upload is an instant click to watch from me, and they never disappoint. Can’t wait to see the authentication video on this one. You may not think Jazzmasters are for you, but you still made some beautiful sounds out of this stunning guitar, I really don’t think there’s a guitar out there that you can’t showcase to its very best. Your playing is exceptional and timeless. Thank you for taking us along on your journey.
Yea buddy - you finally found one! I don't know how many of these I've played - in real and reissues as well as Squier copies. My asshole brother had one of these but someone desoldered the rhythm pickup circuit. Not only that but they repainted it in green then blue. He took it all apart and never once did it ever get played again. He sold it to another guy that had his own place to sell stuff and restored it. I never saw it again. Thank you for sharing this with the rest of us to enjoy!
cig burn is badass
FINALLY A VIDEO ON THE JAZZMASTER!!! I SAW IT IN THE BACKGROUND ON ONE OF YOUR POSTS AND I HAVE BEEN WAITING SOOOOO LONG FOR THE VIDEO!!!!!!!
You gotta get rid of that buzz stop and put a mastery in the bridge. The buzz stop fixes the problem of unwanted noise but takes away the magic of the jazzmaster at the same time. If you just give it a good setup you wont need the buzzstop.
i like this vibrato design
As soon as you started using the tremelo bar, i instantly remembered my bloody valentine
What the "rhythm" circuit in Jazzmaster and Jaguars actually do is give you two options for your tone stack (vol and tone controls) one option is the usual 250k pots you usually see with single coil pickups and the rhythm circuit has 1M pots, the tone caps are also different but that's the basic gist of what's going on. This is a great example to point out when someone asks how the pot values effect tone.
The rhythm circuit is usually a 1MOhm vol pot paired with a 50KOhm tone pot, giving a darker overall sound.
The normal circuit is 1MOhm vol and tone pots. Some players do swap in 250K or 500K pots, though, to smooth out treble frequencies.
The rhythm circuit tone cap filters out a bit more high end when the tone pot is turned down than the normal circuit tone cap does.
The Jazzmaster looks and sounds incredible. Just love how you play and get in that solo zone!
Your playing on this one sounded awesome! I Ioved the quasi-psychedelic/Indian raga vibe at the beginning. You ought to venture further down that road! Super cool guitar!
I could have bought so many of those back in the 70's they were practically giving them away, everyone wanted the old Strats!
I'm an early 60s vintage. Just love listening to and watching Matthew play. A proper guitarist. PEACE 🎸🤠👍
I always look forward to your videos. Thanks!
Love the music this guitar is bringing out of you. Killer tonez too!
Wonderful find, Matthew. A vintage JM and a vintage Jag are my dream guitars right now. Love getting a look at this ‘63!
Sick found. Stellar tones as always 🤘
Can’t wait for the breakdown video!
those pickups sounds sooo GOOD I rewatched this video like times!
Plus your playing style is phenomenal !
My favorite fender guitar
I was got an 66’ jazzmaster, Nice neck with the block but one mic was unmagnestised (i don’t now the world in english) but for sure it was a piece of pure rock !!!
I think it's "de-magnetised". ✌️🇦🇺
@@castleanthrax1833 thanks… I am french and our american level suck’s…:d
Micro in French = Pickup in English.
Lampes in French = Valves in English / Tubes in American English.
Jazzmaster and Jaguars are my favorite Fenders. That buzz stop roller must have been added by a previous owner as it would not have been on the guitar from the factory. The bridge appears to be sitting almost flat against the pickguard. If you raise the bridge to the proper height, and shim the neck then you don't need the buzz stop.
As soon as i saw that beauty i had to watch it, it’s absolutely stunning. I hope you enjoy the 63’ JM
Sounds incredible! Fantastic tones.
I love the tone at 11:52!!
great sound omg especially that neck pup
Great video, playing and info. Loved the tones. Thank you.
Great find and wonderful playing. I love my Jazzmaster.
Jazzmasters always have my favorite tone, no idea why. This was no exception - of the guitars you've shown on the channel, this was my favorite to date. Love it.
I agree...They have all the things I love about a Tele...but somehow meatier
Man the tone you get out this JM is just absurd. I don't think it is possible to get that sound with modern gear that easy.
Please do keep this one. Sounds and looks don’t get better than that, really. I truly enjoyed your playing. Inspiring, cheers
middle position sounds great!
Finally! Glad you made a video with those! Love their sound
Hey Matt, you've put on some weight dude! Excellent piece of Jazzmaster you have there and sound is beautiful. Thank you!
Thank you for taking me somewhere else at lest for a few minutes.
A great find! Jazzmasters are my favorite, and it sounds magical in the middle position. Thanks for the video.
Middle position on a Jazzmaster might just be my favorite guitar sound ever.
Every vid you make inspires me so much. One of the best guitars i’ve ever played in my life was a beautifully worn in ‘65 jazzmaster. Theyre fantastic sounding and comfortable
Sounds pretty awesome here at home with the headphones, great job!
Jazzmaster middle position is by far my favourite guitar sound so THANK you for actually playing with it unlike almost every other american jazzmaster review I've ever seen. Everyone just wants to play the neck and bridge which is really annoying at times when I'm trying to see what a model sounds like.
Love the both pickup position. Congratz ✌🏻
"I love the cigarette burn on the headstock it's a really cool feature." 😆
I agree Matthew, as funny as it sounds.
What a fantastic guitar!! Nice grab on that one!! Sounds amazing.
Hello Matt! This is Dennis from Tulsa again. Nice guitar nice find! As always you make my day when you post a new video. I have a love for old vintage guitars and amplifiers my self. I grew up close to Strings West in Tulsa. Larry let me hang out there and also let me put things in
layaway. I miss going in that place. He is in Skiatook Ok. Now. I think he is doing by appointment only. Any way Matt I am rebuilding a old vintage Tulip and Stinger Strat right now. I run across free old vintage guitars from time to time and I love bringing them back to life. I just wanted to say hello and thank you for all your great videos till next time...
Sweet find! Love the tonal palette a Jazzmaster has.
Love the jazzmaster. They have such a meaty, throaty neck up and the middle position is just 👌
What a sound. That guitar has a fantastic tone.
Hey Mathew. Cool find. I’m a big fan of those guitars. An opinion I have to share. Lose that buzz stop bar behind the bridge. That innovation was designed to create more down pressure on the threaded bridge saddles that could be problematic with buzzing and string hopping but there are much better solutions. That bar does effect the tone and some of the charm of the Jazzmaster to a degree. All that string behind the bridge contributes to its unique sound and that bar chokes it. The main issue is that they are notoriously set up poorly.
I put a .5 degree Stewmac shim in my neck pocket to create a little more downforce and problem solved.
I believe it was Mike and Mikes Guitar Bar where I learned a ton about these offset guitars.
Another quick point. Jazzmasters have 1meg pots and can get petty bright. I was going to replace them with 500k but I read that Jason Lollar suggested using your volume control to slightly tame the highs. Works really well. I rarely have my volume over 8 with my JM. For what it’s worth.
AHHHHH!!!!! Sorry couldn't contain my excitement when I saw the Jazzmaster in your hands
Great demo as ever, thanks so much for all the info and wonderful music. I've never actually had my paws on a Jazzmaster, but it's on my bucket list for deffo! There's a great pic of the late great Walter Becker with his Fender Jazzmaster, it's more than possible that he recorded the solo gtr part for 'Josie' on this instrument. Looking forward to seeing more on this superb '63 example. Nice one Matthew! 🎶👍
What a GEM , and nicely played ✌️❤️🇦🇺🦘
One hell of an experience just listening to you play. Incredible with headphones on.
Sounds amazing. Love that bent tremolo bar.
amazing tone
Hell ya,I was a little bummed out today tks for the vid
Nice tone! I own two 1965 Jazzmaster. The early 65 is a beast. One of my favourite guitars. Looking forward to see more vids on this one.
Great find Matthew. I've been playing Jazzmasters for twenty years. Definitely my favourite. With the rhythm circuit a cool trick is to use it as a boost by turning down the main vol to 8 or nine, then turn up the amps vol and treble. Peace
Awesome. Excellent description and explanation of an awesome guitar. This is the reason I keep coming back. How is such a sound possible. Thanks.
Jazzmaster looks awesome!
Huge congrats on the acquisition. I also keep hoping you'll grab a vintage fender bass at some point too. Thanks again, this one sounds amazing.
Nice score!!
That's a treasure! Love the relic'ing.
A lot of older guys still play these through smaller amps in bars. They usually cut through the mix pretty good. Maybe see what's happening with the pickups. Always a pleasure to see your guitars and abilities.✌️
Do a gear video update bro! This guitar sounds sick! Great tone! Gotta see what all you got in stash over there 🎉
Sick, I painstakingly have my first of 2 vintage jazzmaster projects operational. Got to gig with it the night after it went together, I'm in love with it.
Another nice find Matthew and great playing looking forward to seeing the hidden detail reveal
I love my Jazzmaster. I did switch out the value of the pots and cap on the rhythm circuit to make it more usable. Cool! Thanks for the video.
Your Fender amps sound soooo damn good!
Goes great with that jazzy tremolo. Almost sounds like actual amp tremolo!
That case interior looks more burnt orange, than red. Great guitar!
Gorgeous Jazzmaster)) Love them
You always find the coolest guitars! And I love the way you make them sound like they did 50 years ago!
Awesome sounding guitar great tone wish I had one
Sounds great!
Congratulations, Matthew. I too was charmed by an old rosewood fretboard (I believe still has it's original frets) sunburst Fender Jazzmaster, and had to buy it. It has about the same wear & tear as yours does, which gives it a lot of character. The Jazzmasters are good guitars. I remember a kid in the main rock band of our High School had a shiny brand new Jazzmaster. His had the bound fingerboard with large block inlays, spiffy chrome capped control knobs, and I think a large headstock. With his solid state Vox amp, the Top Forty hits played by his band had a solid ringing tone. When he used a 1st generation Marshall Supa Fuzz (which I understand was based on the British Mk 1 Tonebender) on In A Gadda Da Vida, the tone of his Jazzmaster sounded great with the song.
Very cool JM. What great tone you got out of it. Just the right amount of wear. Needs a refret, though.
Love the tone. Cool guitar ❤
I’m a devout offset guy. Great guitar. I will never not have a Jazzmaster. So versatile.
You found it! I always have to buy my guitars.
The ultimate expression of Space-Age/Cold War/button-down/'59 Cadillac cool. Think Rod Serling introducing the original "Twilight Zone" episodes.
The essential Jazzmaster tone of the era was Bob Bogle playing his on the 1960 version of "Walk Don't Run".He had both pickups on.
Timely. Check out the late great Tom Verlaines Jazzmaster playing.. insanely good.
I've had Telecasters and Strats forever but never a Jazzmaster. You make it sing!!!Thanks again!
They are amazing. Worth checking out.
Amazing tone, whatever you play. The jazzmaster is a beautiful guitar.
I have a strat from that same year in the same finish. I love absolutely love the tortoise shell pick guard with the 2 tone its just different & makes it pop a little
That thing sounds gigantic!
My parents bought me one of these new back in 1959 or thereabouts. I started with a Musicmaster 3/4 size Fender and then got the Jazzmaster only because my music teacher recommended it. In college, I traded it for an Epiphone Casino, I think because we were playing a lot of the British sound repertoire . That Epiphone was stolen from me and I went on with a Gibson ES 330 which I still have along with several other relatively newer guitars.
Congratulations M. I'm impressed with the guitar and your style 😎 don't hesitate to explore the bypass circuit.
Another great vintage Fender guitar! I liked the drop D sound on it. I had a case like that on my 64 P Bass. Thanks for sharing!
Smooth stringin Matthew!
Nice! Love 3 color burst!
beatiful!
Nothing sounds like a jazzmaster. Its really its own beast. I didnt play one for years but when i found the right one, for me, it all clicked. They also really shine with fuzz, heavy strings and down tuning. Try one in C standard!
Thanks Matt. Great guitar great pickups. Bought a silvertone in 64. Had that same cigarette burn when I sold it. Memories
Great video and great guitar as always :D
I was raised on a Fender ‘58 Jazz master…you sir , NOW have one hell of an axe….!
Love this. One of my favs is Nels Cline of Wilco. His tones are sick.
