- Many say that the waters of America’s northern coasts are home to an elusive sea serpent of legend. Named Caddy! Or Cadborosaurus, for long. Sightings and testimonials go back generations. Who is Caddy? And why are serpentine water creatures among humanity’s most prevalent monsters?

Another common explanation for what people were seeing is the giant oarfish, which can be over 50 feet long and look and move a lot like eels do.

I think the ones in folklore are a stretch. However, I believe that oarfish and certainly other marine animals and bugs may be them.

I live in Victoria BC and have had a fishing boat next to Cadboro Bay for 30 years. And I've seen Caddy many times! It's a male sea lion being followed by his harem of females. They move in a line and undulate like a serpent. It's an incredibly convincing illusion. The corpses are Oarfish, they wash up occasionally and are crazy weird looking.

apparently primate vision is very good at spotting snakes (probably a survival adaptation) this could be why random phenomena is often described as "snake like".

Love that modern newspapers saying stuff like "a local man observed a serpentine like creature" that's our version of a bunch of chimpanzees seeing an unusually thick vine and freaking out

My 6th graders were just asking why there weren't any new Monstrums lately. They speculated you were on vacation. 🙂They'll be thrilled to hear about this one!

Ive heard of Nessy or Champ thousands of times but never Caddy before. Thanks for covering.

There's also the mugwump and (as someone else mentioned) ogopogo. Fairly certain there are others from the Americas that I've heard of, but can't recall at the moment.
I once saw a pod of dolphins while on the ferry to Galveston, Texas. They were swimming in a row and for the first few seconds it really did look like it was one, long undulating beast and my mind did flash to "sea serpent?". But then they split up and I saw they were dolphins which was almost as cool as I'd never seen them in the wild before.
Ngl I never heard of this Caddy, but its always nice to learn about a new monster.

I firmly believe that some sea serpent sightings can be explained as sightings of oarfish. There are lots of other possibilities, too, but I'm sure the oarfish is one. It would be fantastic if we really found a new species to explain sea serpents, though!
Caddy's myth made a great subplot in Nancy Drew: Danger on Deception Island, but surprisingly that was the only media I'd seen with it

It could be a giant white sturgeon. They can get up to 18 ft long, have armored plates on their back, and appear very snake like when they swim at the surface.
I was thinking maybe a giant oarfish is what it is.
I'm not keen on the Oarfish identification. They're very smooth, have those big slim fins(?) Frilly type appendages behind their heads, they have that almost iridescent colouring too!
The Sturgeon seems closest but again the head part bothers me. Sturgeons have quite flat, wide heads with their little pointed nose (They're kinda cute! But I've been keeping odd fish most of my adult life lol)
The horse/dog like head? Sounds a lot like a Seal to me! But the rest of the description is just a tad off! Even if they were swimming nose to tail (Which they don't usually do!) There's no scales/plates etc.

I do know of the Ogopogo, and i feel it gets more attention than Caddy

I grew up in the Okanagan and now live in Victoria. Strange that I seem to spend my time in cities famous for sea/lake serpents. I definitely hadn't heard of Caddy before moving to Victoria though. They have a cute statue in the park in Cadboro Bay. I assume Dr. Zarka wanted to cover a sea serpent rather than a lake serpent, given that she's already done a video on Nessie.

@@pbsstoriedlol, one day, keep trying. Just out of curiosity did Oarfish, especially the Giant Oarfish, Regalecus glesne, not come up in the research, they would seem to fit the bill for potential origin stories for sea serpents?

@jayl5032 a popular video game youtuber. His nickname is Caddy and it is uncommon enough of a nickname that whenever it crops up fans of his do a double take.
I've seen snakes swimming across lakes and they do look both fascinating and eerie. My theory is that giant sea snakes around the size of pythons and anacondas were possible, but biologists probably would have confirmed those by now.
cadborosaurus is probably the most interesting sea monster,not just because how many times we've seen it,but because the name alone makes it sound like an actual living creature

Yay, as someone who lives in Victoria, it's delightful to see you cover one of our local monsters! (As someone who grew up in Vernon, BC, I'd love for you to do a video on Ogopogo, but with one on Nessie and one on Caddy already, I can see how that would be too repetitive.) It's interesting they so often seem to have long brown hair - I wonder if a possible explanation for that could be strands of kelp catching on a whale or sea lion? I know big mats of kelp drift around all over the place in our waters here.

At Cadboro Bay, there is a great sculpture of a sea monster that you can climb on as part of the playground.
As a kid, I visited Victoria with my family-I now live there-and the woman who owned the house we rented swore that she had seen Caddy and told me all about it. Childhood me wanted to be a cryptozoologist, and I was so excited to hear from someone who believed in and had seen a cryptid! When we went to Cadboro Bay to go swimming, I was sure I saw Caddy. My parents teased me for how quickly I got out of the water, but I only just found out today from this video that Caddy is harmless, so it made sense to be cautious at the time. Lol. What I saw was probably a boat’s wake or maybe a sea lion, but I was convinced it was Caddy and I wasn’t taking any chances!

I find it strange that people wanna believe in these basic sea monsters and think there is some sort of coverup when actual sea creatures are SO much weirder and far more nightmarish

Whether real or not the stories are Fascinating.
At first, I read your post as "Whether eel or not..."
Convergent evolution is amazing. I have been to several zoos and aquariums that rehabbed different pinnipeds. The way they gracefully fly through the water is just incredible. When I was younger I was obsessed with the lore of cryptozoology, especially any aquatic or amphibious animal. However, as I have gotten older and travelled a bit, I don't think we need to invent new animals for these moments to feel miraculous, magical, and otherworldly. Life on this planet is astoundingly eldritch. I often think about how close some ancient marine reptiles were to modern marine mammals, and I am just in awe of how the same beings and forms repeat themselves in nature from vastly different backgrounds.

While you did touch upon whales as a potential explanation, i feel like beaked whales in particular are worth mentioning. Very long and slender with a beak that may closely resemble the basic head shape of a horse. Some get to over 10m
I believe that certainly there are large sea snakes, oarfish, and eels are sea serpents in their own right. However, they have been dramatized to fit legends.
You’d think with modern technology we would have seen one of these marine reptiles by now.
When I saw "sea serpent" and "North America" I got so excited because I thought it might be about Ogopogo from the Okanakgan 🥺 I'll keep my fingers crossed!

I love the idea of a bunch of seals and dolphins meeting up and swimming in caddy formation just to mess with humans, then diving and laughing their asses off at the dumb humans that think they saw a dragon.

There are several species that were once believed to be mythical, like Komodo dragons, mountain gorillas and okapis, until they were discovered, so who knows if there is some undiscovered sea creature out there?

Oh, there are plenty of sea creatures that have yet to be discovered. Lake dwelling giant sea serpents & late surviving prehistoric marine reptiles on the other hand... They're about as real as centaurs & fairies.
Gigantic squid were only confirmed relatively recently - mind you, they have the advantage of being deep sea creatures, so would be harder to observe than anything that has to come to the surface to breathe.
I think these creatures might be descendants of mosasaurus that survived the K-P-G mass extinction event or plesiosaurus
I’m always partial to the oar fish as my sea serpent of choice lol they’re real and they’re gorgeous

I love cryptozoology, it's essentially saying there may be a new species or subspecies of animal we haven't discovered yet. It seems like a great opportunity to learn lots about sea life (for this cryptid anyway) so you can take what you've seen and compare it to other animals and their behaviour.

The Gloucester sea serpent is a legendary creature reportedly seen around and off the coast Gloucester, Massachusetts and Cape Ann area in the United States.
I am born and raised in the pnw on the Salish Sea, Bellingham, Washington. I have never heard of Caddy. How? I know about the Okanogan lake serpent. Big foot. Cadbotosaurus? Maybe like a BC thing? still, I'm blown that I haven't heard of Caddy. Like, I'm 4th generation pnw swede settler, me and my mom loved cryptids- never heard of Caddy.

It is most curious that most people believe in aliens but have a challenging time wrapping their heads around the possibility of sea serpents or monsters existing,hilarious!

Large serpent like creatures have long been spotted in San Francisco Bay and city water and waste pipe crews are said to be familiar with them…
