Nice intro. Additional points I would love to hear more detail on:- 1. Who pays the rake/ how much to pay (with examples) does the winner pay, what’s expected in different scenarios (wins monster vs win a tiny pot on the flop). How does it vary from venue to venue. 2. Is there any etiquette on stacking chips in front of you 3. What to do with taking one’s time over a decision/ opponents taking time 4. Any etiquette on showing cards at the end of a hand (I heard something about a bluff catch scenario… the bluffer can muck but the caller still has to show? 5. Any etiquette about when to leave a table? (Mid-hand your not in). What about short toilet breaks, can you leave and return, do you have to miss a round of hands? 6 what’s the etiquette on ‘running it twice’? 7. In a tourney, what’s the deal with making a deal (if I ever get to a final table!) Just stuff I don’t know, these things are so much easier when the computer just sorts it all out online instead!!
I would definitely say get used to counting the size of the pot in your head based on the bet sizes rather than counting the chips visually. When there's a mountain of chips, it can be difficult to eyeball whether thats $200 or $500
Very true, plus it makes you focus on the action. If you are stuck trying to count the chips in the pot, it’s a wake up call you were distracted by something!
Enjoyed the video James! Would love a potential round 2 where you elaborate a little more on some of your top tips on the live table as a beginner. (estimating player stacks, pot sizes, keeping notes on certain opponents etc)
Could be be little things like extras on table etiquette, (can you leave after stacking someone if you planned to leave beforehand lol, what happens if you want go on break). But really enjoyed this vid. I will play my first live game next week =D
Yes, Turning Stone is still 18+! I actually just graduated from Binghamton, and that was where I first started to play live (other than small home games). Taught me a lot, and had some good experiences.. and some bad ones.
@@ThePokerBank It's pretty good! They moved the poker room to a bigger space, so there's a lot more room than there used to be, and the rake/high hand promos are the best in western NY as far as I've seen. I'm from Rochester and there are other rooms closer, but I still choose TS for the majority of my sessions. You ever make it back up this way?
@@bsademax5135 Glad to hear it! I haven't played at TS since the last time I drove cross country from MA > Vegas, which was like 15 years ago. Aaaaaaaaaaand now I feel old lol
Cheers Martin! I played in Portland about a decade ago and cash games aren't (weren't?) legal, only tournaments. So they would structure the cash games as "mini tournaments where you can add on" and then every 1-2 hours the game would break, you had an opportunity to tip the dealers, and you could decide to cash out. If you didn't cash out during one of those breaks, you had no other opportunity to do so.
Here's my story of the ONLY time, I ever played live poker. Had to drive about an hour to the location. Went to the table, min buy in was 100€. I had 300€ with me. I was SOO nervous. 😅 The players all seemed nice over all, I just didn't socialize that much, because I was still coming off from a couple lines of speed. 😔 BIGGEST mistake, I made! I'm telling you! 😅 Anyway, it didn't work quite as well as I hoped. There was that one LAG Turkish player I kinda feared (in hindsight, I could have EASILY stacked him. Couple of times probably. That guy could NOT fold. He would just go upstairs to daddy if he lost everything and he would get more buy ins, as the other players would later tell me), he said after a few hands that from now on he would play EVERY hand against me... Anyway. I don't wanna bore you with the details. It went down and up and down a bit. Last hand I played, I get deal two beautiful aces. 🥰 One guy, he seemed Eastern European, played to the river with me. It was a VERY scary hand. I did NOT play optimally. It was a draw heavy board, but I ended up calling his river bet with just my pair of aces. Luckily he just paired a King. He had like K,J, I think. It's been ages from when that happened. At least 6 or 7 years ago... Anyway I ended up 50€ plus my 300, that I brought and I ran the fuck away with it. 😅 I know, very bad etiquette (I didn't LITERALLY run, either, but I chose after that hand, that I had played enough for my first time). Anyway, LESSONS LEARNED! 1) Stay sober!! 😔🙈 And I'm actually planning to go on and find some live poker opportunities next year. Someone close to me would potentially stake me. I'm still constantly grinding online. With the little bankroll, I can afford (or rather couldn't 😅), it's going pretty good so far. And I assume, when I eventually get to the tables another time, with my current mindset, I would also be a LOT more chatty of a player, more open, maybe try to get little speech play in a la Gold/Kassouf. 🤭 I still love the game. That's something that's never changed and probably never will. And James Sweeney right here.... Is the BEST god damn education channel for poker you can possibly find on UA-cam! 🫡👍🤝
Can you do a deep dive video on hands were you either chop the pot or lose, and the math that goes into it? For instance there is a jack high straight on the board, you do not have a queen and your opponent bets big. Or AK on a KK22Q board and your opponent goes all in, you lose to quad 2s and KQ and chop all the other kings (minus bluffs of course). Another example would be having 9 10 on a J978 board you bet and your opponent goes all in. Thanks.

As someone who is just about ready to play live for the first time I agree with this, especially #5

100% agreed.

Anything that helps bring new players into the game is good content.
Agreed =)
Enjoyed the video James!

Sounds like Turning Stone =) Congrats on graduating as well!
Awesome to find out you started at Turning Stone! I did as well! The WSOP Circuit Events are coming up again in March. Hope to see all there! 😁
Cheers Raymond! GLGL during the circuit events =)
5:43 Oh..... *VEEERY* important point there!! ☝️👍
If nothing else, it makes the game more enjoyable for everyone else lol
Oh shit, dude! I started when I was 18 at Turning Stone, too, and still play there once every few weeks!
Very nice! How's the room now a days?

you gave Portland as an example for weird poker rooms. what is considered a weird room/rule in your opinion?
happy new year, cheers

As usual, good advice. People need instructions but need reminders more! That goes true for religion, morality etc. follow this man!!

do you ever forget to count the pot, when action is going by really fast
No, but I also don't count to the dollar (rounded and 'close enough' is totally fine)
@@ThePokerBankespecially when the rake and promo can take out $5-$10, most players won't account for that
@@ThePokerBank yea guess I am just dumb lol
@@danielhenry6777 no no, it takes practice to make the process more automatic in real-time.

Possibly. Are you already familiar with EV formula work?

Oh, nice?
Instructions unclear. I ended up in a strip club 😅.
Poker is a circus nowadays …
Huh?
People in general are playing like tiktokers “poker pros” I’m not saying is your case but that’s what’s really happening out there
Like recording their play? Or simply mimicking what other VLOGgers are doing?
Both
I did not enjoy this video
Anything in particular?
Cool story, bro
