If you’re a Land Rover fan (I am) it’s hard not to see the bias in this review. Like others have said, it really is like comparing apples to oranges. The Defender is definitely a closer comparison to a Wrangler than other options in the LR lineup, but they really are meant for different things. The Wrangler is more of a dedicated off-roader, though I’m not sure if it’s much better in it’s stock setup. Personally I’d go with the Defender as a better combination of robustness, comfort and utility for expeditions requiring a significant amount of off road but not rock crawling. I’ve always liked Jeeps, but having ridden in a couple Wranglers, they typically feel hard, cheap and cramped. They have improved in recent years, but once you’ve ridden in a LR and seen how capable AND comfortable it is, it’s hard to consider a Wrangler. Also, I’m not sure about the Defender, but I know with the LR3 and LR4 raising the suspension is as easy as a set of

perhaps the old land rovers of yesterday were as you say. land rover used to release their new vehicles by having camel trophy events. they dont do that anymore, because their vehicles are no longer serious off road vehicles. now they drive them through water puddles to make a splash, drive across sand, and two inches of snow. they are not what they once were. i thought you already knew that. by the way, it was jeep that won WWII, not land rover

I think the Defender is more of a overlander, with pretty decent on-road ability and damn good off-road ability. On pure off-roading like the rock-crawling that Jeeps in USA often do, you would not want it for a 3 day jaunt through the wilds of Namibia. JLR has very smartly chosen its test drive location and style, because it truly shows the home terrain of the Defender.
And if you honestly wanted a street SUV that can go off road, you should probably pick the Discovery and not the Defender.

Having worked in an off-road shop, the Jeep definitely has an aftermarket advantages, I mean they might as well be made of Lego, but I've seen the darker side of Jeep too, and that is reliability. I know we're talking about land rover here, but really and seriously the Jeep has many if not all of the same issues that most people think Land Rover has as well as some that are completely unique to it. Bent axles, broken transfer cases, blown up engines, destroyed transmissions, and don't forget death wobble, are but of a few of the common things we saw, not even counting all the daily issues that pop up on them. I've had two V8 series II Discovery's, probably the most known for being unreliable, and yes they had their issues but one had over 400,000km on it and had never been apart, it did have some really "interesting" electrical issues, and the other one had the three amigos thing but I wheeled them hard and I never had to hike out of anywhere which is more than I can say for the Jeeps that were following. So I think I will stick with my "unreliable" Land Rovers

Rubbish. I know several Jeep owners who love the off road capability, but hate the on road driving, the cramped space, and have had mechanical gremlins too. Some of them will easily be tempted to try the Defender with far better comfort, easy long range cruising to get to the off road places, more space, higher payload.... and yes they will give up maybe 10-15% extreme rock crawling ability, that most never use. At least here, the base defender overlaps with higher end Wranglers, so the prices aren't different enough for many to not shop both.

These are not adversarial products. The new Defender I have on order is my third modern LR product, and I am very pleased with each of them. I understand and support the design trade-offs made for the value provided, at the time they were designed and sold.
I have friends who own Jeeps, and they are happy with the design trade-offs made by Jeep. Neither I nor they would switch, because what we desire to accomplish when we go off-road is very different.
The more interesting comparison for the Defender, I think, will be Toyota 4X products (particularly since both are global). Again, design trade-offs are made by Toyota for value delivered, different than either Jeep or LR. Personally, I have never enjoyed the driving experience of a Toyota, whatsover. But, many value their reliability above all else, and by measure, those folks are entirely correct ... versus either Jeeps or JLR.

So here’s my take on the Defender- it’s not a Defender at all, it’s a relaunch of the Discovery. Here’s my reasoning:
    1. The Disco was launched as a near luxury offroad vehicle, slotted to fit between the purely rugged but lack of creature comfort Defender and the superbly apportioned but extremely pricey Range Rover. A true allrounder, something you take the kids to school with, go shopping with, tow your boat with, go for a road trip in comfort with, or go offroading with. Look at the market segment the new Defender occupies- it is that same segment. While there may be no more rugged and spartan vehicle the LR family on the one side of it, the market segment is the same as that occupied by the Disco 1 and really all Discos (and LR3 and LR4) here in the States.
    2. Let’s look at the underpinnings of the vehicle- namely the suspension and four wheel drive system. First, the suspension. It is the same air suspension that LR has been using in the Disco 3 and 4 now for like 15 years. While initially the Disco 3s had some issues with them, I have not heard of substantial issues with the units in the Disco 4s. All air sus is not created equal, and the reason Discos are not harsh because they don’t use all of their extension in their offroad settings- there is more to be accessed should you get high centered and also to allow for articulation. It is also why you can lift them another 2 inches to fit 33s on 18 in wheels using Johnson Rods- even though you are taking up 2 more inches of travel, there is still plenty to spare to allow for articulation. Also, the air sus in the Discos works just like the new Defender in that when one wheel rises it send extra air to the other wheel to push it down. It is a very good system that works well offroad- as good as a solid axle- no, but plenty good for what 90% of people are going to be doing offroad. Second, the four wheel drive system. Again it is the same terrain response that has been used since in the Disco 3 and 4s. It is a phenomenal system- imo the best out there of any of the systems that aren’t just traditional front, rear and center lockers. Ford basically uses it in it’s vehicles (insert Raptor here), as they took it with them after selling off JLR. It has high and low range with a very good low crawl ratio. The terrain response adjusts throttle tip in, steering wheel sensitivity, and height, as well delivering power to the wheels in a capacity designed for the certain types of terrain. The Disco 3 and 4s also had the optional locking rear and center diffs called the Heavy Duty (HD) package, just like the new Defender.
    3. Cameras, cameras and more cameras- yup, you guessed it, just like the Disco 4.
    4. Towing and cargo capacity- Disco 4- 7,716 lbs. New Defender- 7,716 to 8,201 lbs.
    5. So the basic underpinnings are an LR4. So now what does it take from the Disco 1 and 2? How about the swinging rear door with mounted spare tire. This wasn’t unique to the Defender, it was on the Disco 1 and 2 also. And the alpine windows- everyone is talking about how cool a desig touch from the old Defender they are- well they were also in the Disco.
So how good will this new Defender be? Well I think that depends on what one wants to with it. If you plan to go rock bashing and playing on black diamond gnarly trails in offroad parks, this isn’t the veh I would recommend. Then you want solid axles, coils springs, disconnecting sway bars, and traditional front and rear lockers (manual preferably bc I have seen plenty of electronic ones fail). If you plan to go overlanding or otherwise driving for several days out in remote stretches where there may be no help for days, then this is not the vehicle I would recommend. I would recommend something more mechanical so that, when it breaks, you can repair it on the spot. Oh, and bring spare parts. I love when people brag about the superiority of mechanical offroaders and then I run across them broken down on the trail and they can’t fix themselves bc they don’t have the parts or parts to improvise. But if you want an all around veh- one that will be good on road, especially on long road trips, one that can tow a 5000-7000 pound trailer, and one that can offroad on moderate trails (blues and some more mellow blacks, beaches, desert) and you are going out not too far from civilization- say days trips up to a long weekend or so, then the Defender will be a great vehicle for that. It is definitely a more well rounded vehicle than a solid front and rear axle veh, will tow more than most offroaders (so if that’s a necessary criteria it will exempt vehicles like the Jeep Wrangler from your options and probably put you in half ton truck territory), yet will still do what probably 95% of people do offroad with their dailies. So many rigs I see on the same trails I’m on doing the same features as me with my LR4 are overbuilt. I mean you don’t need 37s and solid axles to drive to your favorite surfing or surf fishing spot on the beach, or do any of the green and blue trails. And let’s face it- a lot of that is for the look, not the necessity. And if it makes you feel better, take the Defender name off the front and put on Land Rover and just tell yourself you got the new Disco, because in reality that’s what it is anyway.

How to choose between a Jeep Wrangler and a LR Defender...
Step 1: Assess your lifestyle and what you need your vehicle to do
Step 2: Examine/test drive each vehicle thoroughly
    Step 3: Buy a Toyota.
I'm JK ya'll both of these are sick vehicles and would be awesome to own. My only concern is reliability but seems that the Wrangler is more rock crawling/trail oriented and the LR defender is more built for overlanding so depends mostly on what kind of terrain you see in your area and what your lifestyle is. Emme Hall is an expert in the auto industry. I checked online for a highly recommended Wrangler Rubicon. What a great value. Land Rover should have brought one Rubicon along on the expedition in Namibia. All modern cars have computers and sensors which will trigger faults under severe conditions (including modern Jeeps). If Emme had listened to the entire debriefing, the Defender has OTA diagnostics and electronics updating of all computer modules on-board. This is my first time coming across your content and must say that this was a great review. It touched on all the points that matter, IMO. I'm Jeep owner (2015 JKU, AEV 3.5" lift, Yukon 4.88 gears, 35" tires, etc.), but I also have fantasies of owning an old school Defender. This new Defender is attractive in its own right and while the sticker price has me shook, I would consider it for a jaunt down through Mexico and Central America. I think Land Rover made some compelling design choices and I look forward to seeing how owners put them to use.

Correction- a 2 in lift will be no problem on a Defender. I know bc it is basically an updated LR4 which I own and have 2.5 in Johnson Rods lift. That will allow probably up to about 32.5 in mudders on the 18s. This is more than adequate for an indy sus veh- remember you don’t need to lift them as much to put as big tires on bc you don’t have the low hanging pumpkin of a solid axle veh which you need to lift.

The Wrangler Rubicon is a great vehicle for navigating over boulders and Moab BUT on all other real-world metrics the Wrangler is quite limited and these sort of comparisons are weak journalism. We never see statistically sound numbers for how many owners (not journalist) take a new $60K vehicle off-road navigating boulders and mud bogs. I see plenty of LR Discovery and Range Rovers overlanding and towing.
    1) Which vehicle would you want to put your family in on a cross country trip?
    2) Which vehicle would fare better in an offset crash with another vehicle?
    3) Which vehicle has better NVH performance?
    4) Which vehicle is the better all-rounder?
    5) Which vehicle has better payload and tow ratings?
The new Defender is not the old Defender and thank god for that as that market is very small and not very profitable unless you are going to produce a low volume expensive vehicle (G-Class). Auto manufacturers have to be careful and not listen to the loudest voices on forums because what people say they want and what they actually will buy do not always align. The Jeep Gladiator sales have not lived up to expectations -at all despite decades of big mouths claiming they would buy it if Jeep built it. There is a limited market for a Gladiator and the same holds true for the vintage Defender. The new Defender is what the current Discovery should have been but the noise for 7- adult seats and 20 cup holders drowned out reality for LR (Subaru Ascent anyone?) marketing.

The Jeep can be modified to be an extremely capable off road vehicle, with a few mods like a lift and larger tires the Jeep can drive the king of the hammers race, the Land Rover will never be capable of even doing one lap on that difficult course, if one doesn’t go,off road the land rover is the better choice, im happy to see that you haven’t sold out like so many automotive journalists, the Jeep is way more capable hands down, traction control is never as good as a real locker when traction is limited and the terrain is steep.

Either a silver Defender and I keep my current Trailer, or a white Rubicon and get a matching Patriot X1. "Hard to put a 2 inch lift on a Defender." Step out of Wrangler Walmart parking lot posing world for a second and think; "What is my viewer's intended purpose for the vehicle?" Please also, think; "Why are viewers actually watching my videos?" I mean, you are purportedly providing a comparison review between the Defender and the Rubicon to help someone pick which is the right one for them. Or, are you proving that your preference for the Rubicon is correct? I can't really tell, but it seems to be the latter. My take away from your review is that if one gets one's kicks by modifying a vehicle, lifting it, changing gearing, taking doors off, adding lots of LED lights, adding jerry cans and leaving them eternally empty, going rock crawling on weekends, and then running around the suburbs and flexing their unique creation, while seeing about 8 other similarly PIMPED Rubicons at McDonalds, then Rubicon wins, hands down. Rubicon is cheaper to start with, easier to find, cheaper to modify, cheaper to maintain, and cheaper to fix when you bash a body panel rock crawling when you forced the vehicle into a rock crawl situation for fun. If one one just spent $50k on a Defender with air suspension that gives you an extra 5 inches at the push of a button, and can also can drop the vehicle height 1.6 inches at the push of the same button, it is the height of stupidity to void the warranty to put on a 2 inch lift. (for the record, I don't like air suspensions either, but spending more money to lift 2 inches to put bigger tires for more ground clearance seems to be an attempt to turn the Defender into an American Jeep-style Rock Crawler, and not the more versatile overland Defender. Sometimes increasing vehicle height makes the path impassible due to overhead tree branches etc.) I don't have a dog in this fight. I don't own a Wrangler or a Defender. I watched your review hoping to see which would be better to purchase. Your quoted geometry numbers state Defender offers 5.4 inches more wading depth than Rubicon, more ground clearance, better break over and departure, but less approach angle. Cars and 4x4s are not spreadsheet comparisons. If they were, all we would need is the manufacturer's specs. So, we watch videos and read reviews by auto journalists and bloggers to get their takes. You mentioned that the Defender is far more comfortable, tows more, and carries more payload. It seems from your comparison and the many other comparisons between these two vehicles that the Jeep Rubicon is the better platform for an extreme modified 4X4 project, or dedicated rock crawler. Nevertheless, it seems that if I'm not into weekend rock crawling but more into loading up the family for a weekend camping trip or an extended "overlanding" experience, that the Defender is the way to go. Let's say I'm 40 something, with a dog and kids and a wife. I want to have a nearly unstoppable 4x4 off the showroom floor. I don't want it to look like the bagger at the grocery store's 4x4, and I want it to be able to tow, haul, and hold more stuff than a Prius. You're saying, go with the Defender, aren't you?

The new Defender is more road and overlanding oriented with comfort and luxury and Rubicon is more off road oriented. If you want to travel 2 weeks in Africa it will be light years apart to a 2 day Rubicon Trail in term of car spec and preparation (extra fuel, extra water, roof top tent and luggage vs. 40" tires, articulation and angles). In the end it is a problem of what you intend to do with your car, you can have a lot of fun in the woods with a Suzuki Jimny or a Polaris RZR for less than 1/4 budget or you can completely salvage, repair and modify an old Toyota Land Cruiser (60, 70, 80 or 105) and still have some money left in your pocket to spend on the trail.

Biased review... I am sure if you owned a Suzuki Jimny you would still say its better than a defender😂😂

My LR3 has 32s and they operate fine, it only takes 150 dollars to raise with Johnson rods and gives near on 400mm clearance

Your landrover is better than the new one, if the new one has computer issues or sensor issues far in the trail good luck getting it out without a big bill or headache. But your rig looks great, I’m old school simple, less computers solid axles. 32 inch tires is nice size not to big and you learn how to drive better than with big tires, I did the mohab top of the world, hells revenge, fins and things with 31” tires made it 1/4 of the way I blew my spider gears on the Dana 35.

@@williamwilde9867 I am pretty sure LR have ironed out all the electronic bugs .Mechanically LRs have always been reliable apart from Axles, but they only take half hour to replace.Same as air struts on LR3 very easy to replace on the trail.Electronics are easy and cheap as well if one can pinpoint ,but generally electronics have never held me to bay in the bush only time lol

laurence mccarthy I’ve had close call with computers with engine shutting off almost killed me, I don’t trust a vehicle with lots of computers. And the diagnostic costs. But if you love your LR3 and it works for you that’s great, I’m just old school with one computer only.I really like the old school defender 90

The breakover angle is a big deal in the defender... It's probably going to take a 3 inch lift and some 35s or better to hit a 28 breakover on a 4 door Wrangler.
I'm there ;-). 2 inch lift and modest tire upgrade will get you to 28° breakover with the Cherokee Trailhawk.

Telling good jokes isn't her calling but I appreciate the negative of the Defender. I learned a lot from this video, while other channels sucked off the Defender to please advertisers. If I could have one, the Defender is classier.
