  • When I bought this car I heard a noise I'm all to familiar with, having changed probably a dozen wheeel bearings. Over time, friction and heat cause the bearing to lose its lubrication. You'll at need a press. Harbor Freight's 20 Ton press will work, NOT the 12 ton(axle shaft too big). Both rear axle shafts replaced = $1000-$2000 job. Regreasing the bearings is cheaper, faster and should last for at least 10,000 miles. Also recommend you change the axle seal(s) in the hub.

Was your humming noise when u we’re on highway? I have a 2015 pro4x, VERY similar noise that I think is from rear, I mainly hear it when on throttle and less on deceleration but it’s still there. I also have some noise when I put it into gear and backup or go forward. I replaced all my U joints and rear CV joint. I also pulled off the diff cover and everything looks great. I have a “click” or small clink when I give throttle from a stop (only does it once) and then the humming that you have too.

Wonder if it could be your carrier bearing????

That would be my guess too because of the throttle application. A bearing make more and more noise based on speed.

    How has this held up?
I’m thinking of trying the same thing this weekend.

Mine is still holding up well. This method is what they do on big rigs and similar heavy duty equipment. And Yes St.Maurice is correct. Replacing the seals and using the right grease is imperative!!!

Did you need any special tools to take the axle out?

None. Just metric socket set, breaker bar and ratchet.

Impact and electric ratchet will make it easier and faster.
