What is a parathyroid hormone blood test?

If your blood tests showed very high or very low calcium levels, your doctor may suggest a parathyroid hormone blood test. This test will measure the level of your parathyroid hormone ioPTH.
Why is a parathyroid hormone blood test done?
• The PTH blood test can help your doctor find out if the parathyroid gland is the cause of your abnormal calcium levels.
• If your test shows that the PTH level is appropriate for your calcium level, there may be other reasons for the high or low calcium level.
