I loved this video! You are a very good teacher and I also learned a lot! Can you please tell me how you made the smallest of the 3 baskets you showed - what size base, etc did you use? I am a bit confused. I understood you to say that whatever height your machine is would be the smallest basket you could make if you want straight sides and not one that flares out. The smallest one you showed looked considerably smaller. I would very much appreciate any help! Thank you in advance!!
Thanks so much Janice, that smaller basket I think I did a 6 inch base so the angle had to sew more rounds at 45 degrees and also take off the side of my sewing machine to get it closer to 90 degrees while lifting at the same time… but yes 7.5 inch base will be much easier to get straighter sides for my sewing machine. You will see once you make a few. I have experimented with smaller bases and find I need at least 7 inches or more is best for me.

Do a little practice piece and see what stitch width and length works best for your rope and typically I find that a shorted distance between stitches makes a firmer basket but also the rope firmness plays a role too… I set my width at 6 and length at 2 on my machine and it seems to work best. The stitch length will give you more stitches per inch the smaller you go. I really think it depends on the rope. Also a good 40 or 50 weight thread helps too. , thank you for watching😁 hth

@@vanessajackson5595 at least 50 feet… you can get 100 ft bundles but look at the link in description , you get over 300 ft I think for less than $20.00 …that what I used for this basket…have fun , also get some good thread, 40 Wt cotton or polyester
Allow yourself a bit extra for practice and know that not all clothes line rope is the same, some softer some have different core…but the one I use in video was my fav at that point in my basket making…u may have to experiment with different cords until I find one u like…happy basket making Vanessa!😁😁

This an excellent tutorial, I am trying to follow step by step on my brother A150. Just a few questions: Is my brother A150 strong enough for these projects? I tried with normal thread and it’s not coming out neat and the thread breaks a lot and I am not sure if the product will last , do you mind sharing the type of thread you are using? I tried some upholstery threads and most of them seem too heavy for a domestic machine

Meryl, I do have a video , how to make a basket with one handle ( peeks a boo handle) but if you could tell me exactly what you are thinking I can do that too. Maybe two handles?
The markings are on my stack of paper next to the sewing machine and are measured approx from the right side of presser foot and to the left. So about where my base would be when sewing… just a guide so I stop soon enough and double check the diameter of my base with a ruler.. hth. Thank you for watching🌸🌸🌸😁😁😁
Great tutorial! I have been looking for a sewing machine where its role is to simply sew. No quilting features, embroidery, etc. I noticed your machine is a Brother but could not see the model number. My concern with the rope process is the wear and tear on a machine. Any input would be appreciated.
My sewing machine is brother Strong and Tough hd531st… also , Singer has a heavy duty machine that you can purchase with extension table. My only issue with my machine is that her is no warning beep to let you know that presser foot is not down because of the thickness of my rope it seems like it is down when it is not. If you are wanting to make rope baskets it’s important that the sewing machine does a zigzag stitch…some industrial machines only straight stitch. Hope this was helpful. 😁😁
It does help, thank you. My serger, coverstitch, embroidery and current sewing machine are all Brother. Just typing what I have, you would think I am quite seasoned. Only on the embroidery machine. Your machine is not electronic right?

@@judegreb I haven’t tried polyester rope but it should as long as your sewing machine will sew it… give it a try and let us know how it went…I’ve seen videos of all types of rope used for baskets…maybe a learning curve to get used to it…have fun!
I just made the cutest little basket using some unassuming polyester 1/4 inch rope that I found in the garage and it worked really well on my machine with polyester thread!
Please check description for cord link that I use from Amazon. It’s a lot of cord for very cheap price… this basket was probably 40 - 50 feet of 6 mm / 1/4 inch rope

I am sorry I do not make larger basket at this time because they are a bit more difficult to guide thru the machine and keep at a 90 degree angle…

@@ljiljanagrozaj8108 clothesline cotton rope is probably around 10 US dollars for 100 feet depending on where u get … hardware stores or online stores, prices vary . I suggest 1/4 “ / 6mm cotton rope for beginners

@@merylweintraub9747 the tags are Not a necessity but just add a bit of style and cover the end of rope for a nice finish.
Meryl, I do have a video , how to make a basket with one handle ( peeks a boo handle) but if you could tell me exactly what you are thinking I can do that too. Maybe two handles?
When you made the markings on the bed of the machine for the 6,7,8”, was that measured from the needle out to the left? Great informative tutorial 😊
The markings are on my stack of paper next to the sewing machine and are measured approx from the right side of presser foot and to the left. So about where my base would be when sewing… just a guide so I stop soon enough and double check the diameter of my base with a ruler.. hth.

Great tutorial! I have been looking for a sewing machine where its role is to simply sew. No quilting features, embroidery, etc. I noticed your machine is a Brother but could not see the model number. My concern with the rope process is the wear and tear on a machine. Any input would be appreciated.
My sewing machine is brother Strong and Tough hd531st… also , Singer has a heavy duty machine that you can purchase with extension table. My only issue with my machine is that her is no warning beep to let you know that presser foot is not down because of the thickness of my rope it seems like it is down when it is not.
If you are wanting to make rope baskets it’s important that the sewing machine does a zigzag stitch…some industrial machines only straight stitch.

It does help, thank you. My serger, coverstitch, embroidery and current sewing machine are all Brother. Just typing what I have, you would think I am quite seasoned. Only on the embroidery machine. Your machine is not electronic right?

@@judegreb I haven’t tried polyester rope but it should as long as your sewing machine will sew it… give it a try and let us know how it went…I’ve seen videos of all types of rope used for baskets…maybe a learning curve to get used to it…have fun!
I just made the cutest little basket using some unassuming polyester 1/4 inch rope that I found in the garage and it worked really well on my machine with polyester thread!

@@Christiane24 Christine, somewhere around 6mm or 1/4 inch rope 40 or 50 yards … …also depends on how thin your rope is…thinner rope will need more
How much cord did you use and where do you get your cord. I am new to this.
Please check description for cord link that I use from Amazon. It’s a lot of cord for very cheap price… this basket was probably 40 - 50 feet of 6 mm / 1/4 inch rope
Also, you can check your local hardware store for cotton clothesline… usually comes in 100 ft
When you say 7-1/2”, is that the diameter of your circle?
Yes it is Marie. Just a note,. Starting with the 7 1/2 base usually ends up being at least an inch larger in diameter in the finished basket

Yes presser foot down or stitches will be loose and misshaped
You might have seen me forget to put presser foot Down by accident in this video
I've never seen it from that direction before. Usually the piece u r sewing to is on the right side not left
