In 2004, I saw a movie that would occupy my thoughts for the next 20 years. It was called Straight Jacket, and it asked what would happen if Rock Hudson's life story was told as though it was a Rock Hudson film. I thought Straight Jacket was destined to become a queer camp classic, but instead it just ... vanished. And for two decades I wondered why -- but now we finally have some answers. This is the story of Straight Jacket: the struggle to get it made, why it mysteriously vanished, and how a mid-century gay romance is poised for a triumphant return.

I worked for Blockbuster Video for 13 years and i remember 'rescuing' several small, independent titles like these when we were instructed to destroy them. I had a stack of copies of "Grand Theft Parsons" "I'm Not There" and "Danny Deckchair" because i knew they were titles that were going to be completely disappeared. Arbitrarily making art unavailable is not ok.

There are LGBTQ archives in several countries. ONE Archives in Los Angeles, ArQuives in Toronto, QRAB in Gothenberg, Schwules Museum in Berlin, IHLIA in Amsterdam. If anyone has films or books (or other items) you think they might like, consider contacting them and asking. It's important to preserve LGBTQ culture.

I have so much respect and affection for Richard Day and Jack Plotnick for their work in both "Girls Will Be Girls" and "Straight Jacket". Both hilarious favorites of ours. I remember we drove to Portland, Oregon to see "Straight Jacket" at the time (since nothing gay comes to our little conservative town). Loved it, and so appreciate the effort that went into both! Still holding out hopes to someday see the "Girls Will Be Girls" sequel, which I think would have even more of an audience these days with the rise of drag and the word of mouth on the original. I know I'd be buying multiple copies for friends. Thank you both! ....and a big thanks to Carrie Preston for her hilarious performance, especially that GREAT song.

That's such a powerful message in the movie's ending. The words are perfect and still resonate today. It's mad to think this was in the early 2000's when we all considered ourselves more enlightened and comfortable with this kind of narrative. Two steps forward, one step back.

I fell in love with Straight-Jacket when I saw it at Outfest in 2004, then bought the DVD, and have seen it umpteen times since then. Thank you for the back story and for letting those unfamiliar with it that it's now available to screen. I've had the pleasure of seeing/reviewing Matt Letscher's stage performances multiple times but have never gotten to tell him how much I loved this movie. I did, on the other hand, meet Carrie Preston and Michael Emerson a few years back in a theater lobby and share my love for Straight-Jacket with them. I saw a review for the dvd of Straight Jacket that said the plot was too far fetched and i was like, it’s 99% actual queer history. The 1% invention was too much?
And let me guess, the plot of Die Hard is gritty kitchen sink realism.
I liked Carry Preston in it. I just saw her in The Holdovers.

26:50 - "We mean you no harm." Such a powerful statement. Still SO true of the continuing 'witch hunts' that go on today. The paranoid crowd who have been scared into fearing certain groups as some kind of threat, when they are no such thing. Both sides are NOT equal. One side intends to harm the other (because of this mis-placed fear), and the other side simply wants to live their lives in peace as themselves. Best of luck to all those who have ever, are currently, and will in the future- fight the good fight for equality and freedom for ALL.

i watched straight-jacket right after seeing your rock hudson post-video stream last month! i was very curious about its production, so this is a great follow-up. it felt refreshing how a movie depicted communism being important to a main character, and how anti-communist paranoia was similar to the paranoia of the lavender scare. its history of originally being a stage play makes a lot of sense, and for me explains a lot of the specific kind of charm it has. :)
i really appreciate sally's part of the story and the effort that went into making sure she wasn't the common "ignored wife of a gay man" trope. her part in the courtroom scene with the Old Movie Accent was great. the delivery of lines like the "big honking queer" one made it just a really enjoyable movie that uses silliness well, but also has a lot of heart and significance. it's terrible to hear about the way it was sent into obscurity along with so many other movies, but i am very glad it is accessible today.
this was great, i am looking forward to watching the longer interview videos and checking out the other movies you listed in the description !
editing to add that it was lovely to see the people involved continue to be passionate about this movie, and that i was delighted by the use of cgi and green screens. i just really like it. i also really enjoy michael emerson's performances in everything i've seen him in (it is also my opinion that his joker from the dark knight returns is the best joker voice, regardless of the story being what it is), so it was a great surprise to see him in straight-jacket and incidentally realise that he and co-star carrie preston are married.

I watched Straight Jacket last year on Amazon and thought it was a lot of fun. I'm also a HUGE fan of the Donald Strachey movies, and I didn't realize they'd had that history of being buried. I stumbled on them randomly on Amazon a few years back and fell in love. The series of detective novels they're based on also has a fascinating history, having been written by a gay man and published starting in the 70s (pre-AIDS crisis). It's fascinating to read those novels with that perspective, knowing that they were written in real-time as LGBT history was unfolding over the last half of the 20th century. And the movies (that update the setting to the 2000s) are a lot of fun as well, and are reflective of the LGBT culture of their era as well. Great stuff!

Just wanted to say, I just discovered your channel the other day. Randomly saw your video about rock hudson... which led me to tab hunter, anthony perkins, kevin conroy and more.
I don't know if I've ever said something is life changing and meant it. But this channel truly is. They've made me learn to appreciate the history of my people and overall just makes me want to do better. Thank you

As far back as I can remember, I have been gay while accepting and being somewhat out in 1977. Over the years, I’ve seen a number of non-mainstream gay themed movies but never heard of this one. I am intrigued and must see it. Thanks for supplying the info to view it. 🎉❤❤

There's a few great queer movies that have gone oddly forgotten. "Gayby" and "Appropriate Behaviour" are two of my favourites. "Personal Best" and "Longtime Companion" are two that I need to get around to watching.

Dear Matt, thank you so much for educating us time and time again on queer culture and history. There has not been a single video where I haven't cried my eyes out. It’s kinda funny but I mainly know Matt Letscher as Burton from The New Adventures of Old Christine. Anytime after that show when I would see him in something else I would check IMBD to make sure I’m right. Well every time I’d check his IMDb I would scroll it for a hot second to check what else he was on and I always saw Straightjacket listed. I tried to find it a few times since it looked interesting but I never could so I just gave up. Now knowing the behind the scenes my heart just breaks for that film! It got the raw end of a bad deal and that just sucks! But now that I know I can watch it I’m definitely going to today finally after years of wanting too lol! Thanks Matt as always for an amazing video!

Matt, when I saw the thumbnail for "Straitjacket" I did not know that there was two films by the same name... I accidentally watched the Joan Crawford film. That was a mistake😮🤮 I will never go down that rabbit hole again. 😒
I love the "straight jacket" film you discussed ...I thought it was charming & clever. When you mentioned "girls will be girls " you mentioned Miss Coco Peru ❤was a cast member ...I went on a deep dive to find that film ...I ended up subscribing TUBI and now I have a huge TUBI queue . Thanks, Matt 😊😃

"because it had straight ppl in it and everybody's fine with that now" had me! I know due to context it was meant differently, but this had John Waters vibes;o)
Discovered Straight Jacket trough Girls will be girls through Trick and it's a blast! The musical no. Two kinds of love (also av. on Ut) reminded me so much of Little Shop of Horrors.
And was going to mention Friends & Family, which gave a new twist to La cage aux folles^^ Will look up the other Regent films, cause I suspect to find more of my hidden gems. Ha, Sordid Lives (with our late Leslie Jordan), The mostly unfabulous social life of Ethan Green and even Ja zuster, nee zuster (list on Indie Wire), love them.
How about Get your stuff, 9 dead gay guys or Nigel Finch's Stonewall '95 (flawed, but fab)?
    Thx Matt!

I love hearing about this movie but also its inspirations in Rock Hudson and its creator, Richard Day. I wish queer history was taught to everyone, so people can stop pretending like being LGBT+ is not new. We've always been here, we've struggled as well as strived, and we always will be here! Now I have two more queer films to add to my list, but I'm upset the world never got a Girls Will Be Girls series. Maybe it's not too late??

Very good episode I’ll definitely watch the movie. It kinda cracked me up they mentioned friends & Family cause it’s one of my favorite movies and literally just yesterday I’d told a friend about it and found a link for her to watch it. Sounds like there was a lot of great movies tied up in that hopefully more will be released and made more visible.
By the way I had to do a double take when you said a fox executive and a republican lawyer were trying to build a queer media empire that seems so off (and I know you can be gay and republican it just still seems odd.)
Really wish we would get a lgbt network. Bravo used to be but now I don’t know what it is.
Really adore this show hope there’s lots more to come this year.

Matt, I can't thank you enough for introducing me to this! I'd never heard of it, but wanting to watch more full-length films in the new year of 2024 (and not just reactions / essays / podcasts / sketches / short films) I looked it up and watched it in full yesterday while snowed-in (just 4 days after you posted the video, while it was fresh in my mind and intriguing), and it was fucking adorable! I was squeeing / aww-ing / giggling / tearing up several times, I can't stand it!
Even taking the 50's Hollywood film history / gay culture history / communist fearmongering history / and creator's personal history completely out of it (though those elements do add very much, obviously), the character growth and relationships, and story and atmosphere and comedy are all amazing! Fantastic, even! So many of my favorite tropes, but with plenty of nuance and great messages. Rick's words about halfway through were so true, that art can be so much more than cute. But the cute romance is still very much loved and appreciated!
I'm always deeply grateful when introduced to a lesser-known gem, and this is no exception. I'll be rewatching my favorite scenes on a loop while snowed-in for the 2nd day, guaranteed! ;)

Wow. I had no idea that this film existed and, until the last few years, what a mess Regent was. I’ve worked on many-a-film projects including my own shorts, and all I can say is that it pains me. So not only was this Richard Day’s film…it was also the actors, the lighting department, the sound department, the editor, the costume designer, the music department, the script supervisor, the casting, the set decorator(s), the…..you get the point. A lot of people have sacrificed blood, sweat, tears, relationships, personal time and so much more to make this movie and please take a moment to appreciate those of who’ve made entertainment possible. They deserve it.
Matt, I’m so sorry I’ve not been able to be a Patreon supporter as of late and I hope I can get back there soon because I love each and every video you’ve put out.
