pretty sure it was the summer of 1995. Mtv & VH-1 came from the same building, & a lot of the older Mtv staffers moved over to VH-1. during the summer, Mtv europe would line up a load of festival visits & get a lot of coverage from all over the UK & europe. VH-1 didn't have that kind of traction with the finance people yet, & back then there weren't as many 'revival circuit' festivals that would've been appropriate for VH-1's demographic. so instead, we decided to take over the whole building for the day- a saturday. this special used both of the studios & the large atrium of the building, & (iirc) the manor/sanctuary mobile to augment the sound facilities. there was a truck outside anyway- I was running in & out all day. lunchtime, a brief trip to the canteen to grab something, & that's where I saw JW & phil M standing in the queue. "mr wetton, sir," says I, "I'd just like to thank you for all the music..." & shook his hand. "thanks" he said. PM looking on, bemused. "no offence, but I'm a bass player too" I added, to sort this out. many years later I count PM as a facebook pal. I'm not with Mtv any more, or I'd be in the library right now, sorting out the rest of this special.
Yes, you're quite right. "Do it Again" is the first track on side two of the 1987 Wetton Manzanera Album and its a Wetton/Manzanera original, rather than the Steely Dan cover here.
I was the engineering manager for this. shook john's hand in the canteen. hell of a day.
Duncan, what year was this

interesting, thanks for sharing
Well 1995 John was on tour "Chasing the Dragon" I saw him in Montreal (october) and he had short hair those days
Hello Mr Duncan, how long did they play? Is this like a mini concert? And do you know if VH1 ever put this on dvd?
Oh God, RIP, Jonhn Wetton!!!
Thank You Mr. Wetton, now rest my friend.
Love John`s voice on this so fresh.
What a phenomenal beautiful voice, right up there w/ Elvis Sinatra RIP JOHN!
the great John Wetton!! R.I.P.
I am heartbroken over the loss of John Wetton ... crushed...sigh.
wow😮RIP John
Why was Wetton so sexy? Not just my favorite artist, but a handsome man.
thanks for the pleasure of allowing us to listen and absorb wonderful melodies that can only lift our spirits day in and day out
rip love u john wettion
My favorite Steely Dan track! Great cover!
Ríp John Wetton
RIP JOHN FOREVER
Wonderful cover!
Amazing!!
Thank you so much!!
RIP.
I love this!
Hooray finally back on youtube!!!
i Love IT ❤✌💕💗
Prefer this to the original - Wetton stamps his authority all over this and Manzanera is always an interesting guitarist!
simplesmente demais tudo de bom
Love covers!
I never understood this song until I just heard Wetton sing it!
Now thats epic
RIP
I can't imagine wanting to play guitar live in a hot studio wearing an overcoat!
When you're as cool as Phil Manzanera you can do it!!! 😂😂😂
RIP John
安らかにお眠りください。キースエマーソンとグレッグレイクとスリーピースで天国で。
Vocal timing jars on me.
Didn't they also do an original called "Do It Again" on their album?
Yes, you're quite right. "Do it Again" is the first track on side two of the 1987 Wetton Manzanera Album and its a Wetton/Manzanera original, rather than the Steely Dan cover here.
From the Wetton/ Manzanera album sessions? Alan White on drums?🗿
Nope ... Just jamming out a cover.
Nice spot Phil
👁 El ojo
What year did they do this?
John Wetton has been sidelined from the band 's upcoming dates due to a recurrence of cancer, very sad news.
I wish I healed him.
Guess the date was on June 26 1995 for VH-1 shooting. Wetton/Manzanera + Chris Thompson? Martin Orford? Alan White? Who else?
Karl Wallinger on keys/vocals but offstage for this one -- he sings "Jealous Guy" in another, longer clip.
June 24, 1995
Is that Alan White playing drums?
Could be, no close ups but he was wearing a chain and it sounded his laid back style but his kit wasn't mic'd worth a damn
Where is the whole music video?
there's another clip with Karl Wallinger - search VH-1 Midsummer Live
RIP Walter Becker- hope Manzanera teams up with Donald Fagan
I always described 801 as an English Steely Dan.🗿
This is better than the original.
I swear, I thought that was Adrian Belew 😂
John was funny in that movie 'Dumb & Dumber' (oh wait, that was Jeff Daniels….I get them confused).
Why do this song? ... these guys have so much music of their own. But I do like Phil's solos.
why indeed.
This is not selling out; such a nicer person than Bruford; RIP
Love Wetton but now one should try this song it always sounds crappy unless its Steely Dan !
Please don't tell me it's Chris Thompson from Manfred Mann's Earth Band doing the backing vocals? - he is so much better than this !!
Now you got me!! I have the same question!
