I just lost my wife, Karen, after 42 years of marriage. We heard this song years ago and it was an intstant favorite for both of us. Thanks for posting it, I've often looked for it. Brings back great memories of a wonderful woman!
Frank Gilligan has always had a great voice. The harmony is absolutely the best. It came out when I started in radio. Those guys are the best. We had them several times at the KKYX River Festival here in San Antonio back in the day. Super nice guys as well.
Thanks for posting. This song was the ONE for us. It has lasted in peoples memories for over 20 years. Thanks for all the great comments. Mason Dixon (Frank, Jerry, Rick & Terry)
I was in a band called “Lost Prairie” that was the house band at the Ponderosa in Jackson, MS when you played there. This song made me an instant fan. Y’all were an amazing band and great to hang with. All the best.
BLESS YOU ... I had this song in my "hard" collection ... loaned it out ... never got it back. This one always gets me ... don't know why ... it just does.
I had a Karen once, and I was very happy, but could no longer work after the relationship was very complicated, we were very immature, I just heard that she is married and a part of me still loves her.. she still remains the most beautiful part of my life. I've never been so in love, I could spend hours watching her sleep, walk, smile, laugh ... she change my world, then went away and broke it in half, a bittersweet feeling, never a woman that impact on me. 7 years now... and i cant forget her.
my daughter and son have a band, southern revolution, we play cover and original material. I'm 68 years old and have heard a lot of musicans and know them. today's music sucks, MASON DIXON, WHERE ARE YOU. This song reminds me of my Karen. we broke up in 1963, she contacted me in 2007. She was never forgotten and this song got to me. I've been happily married 46 years. Karen;s memory will allways stir me when Karen comes around.thank's Mason Dixon.
I just Love all the songs you play, I had gone to a opening at " Cowboys " bar in Ft.Worth, TX, & you all played there... LOVED IT!!!! anyway I'm in Missouri now, but still listen to ya'll every chance I get.
I was stationed at Offutt AFB in Omaha in the late 80's when this song came out. I thought these guys were fantastic! I bought their album (vinyle) Exception to the Rule and still have it. Play it ALOT. I got to see them perform at Bushwackers in Omaha and it was awesome!
+Gene Wilber Wow! I got to see them at Buschwackers also!!! What a great memory. Have the (autographed) album too and wished I had it on CD.... I love the songs, "Only A Dream Away", "I Never Had a Chance With You" and "Don't Lock Out My Heart" most of all!!!
Mason Dixon : When Karen Comes Around Thought I had my life together, Things were going so fine We encountered stormy weather But we always found the sunshine. I thought I’d covered everything Everything that life could bring and more. But I forgot to close one door. When Karen comes around I don’t know what to do. I doubt everything I’ve found My heart divides in two. When Karen goes away For me it’s never through. My world turns upside down When Karen comes around. Did I plan too far ahead? I don’t know, it’s hard to tell. I made my choice, I made my bed But lately I don’t sleep so well. I really thought we had it all Stone by stone I’d built a wall around you, Oh but then out of the blue. Karen comes around And I don’t know what to do. I doubt everything I’ve found My heart divides in two. When Karen goes away For me it’s never through. My wall comes tumbling down When Karen comes around. Karen comes around And I don’t know what to do I doubt everything I’ve found My heart divides in two. When Karen goes away For me it’s never through. My wall comes tumbling down When Karen comes around.
I bought their used cd "Exception To The Rule" last November and it was excellent. I was shocked I found it so I grabbed it. I like this song I wish it would have charted higher.
I'd love to have a CD of "Only A Dream Away". I will never forget getting to see you guys play at Bushwackers in Omaha, NE... A very special night, I got an autographed album and fell in love with Rick! LOL
i first met karen 38 years ago. I thought I did her a favor by letting her go. I may have helped her, but I sure have a hard time forgetting her. She,s a very sucessful lawyer now, and way further up the ladder then she would have been had she stayed with me. This song says it all.
Love this whole album! Another song on that album, A Mountain Ago, is also a great tune. there was also another country band around this same time, the Shooters, who where a favorite also. Their album, Solid As A Rock is also a favorite. Both bands, gone with the wind...sad. Oh, and one more, Foster and Loyd, great duo!
Greetings! While I specialize in US "Pop" music 1914-1933 this song is neat as all get out! The Oak Ridge Boys had a nice recording of this title as well.

Mason Dixon : When Karen Comes Around
Thought I had my life together,
Things were going so fine
We encountered stormy weather
But we always found the sunshine.
I thought I’d covered everything
Everything that life could bring and more.
But I forgot to close one door.
When Karen comes around

I made my choice, I made my bed
But lately I don’t sleep so well.
I really thought we had it all
Stone by stone I’d built a wall around you,
Oh but then out of the blue.
Karen comes around
And I don’t know what to do.
I doubt everything I’ve found
My heart divides in two.
When Karen goes away
For me it’s never through.
My wall comes tumbling down
When Karen comes around.
Karen comes around
And I don’t know what to do

My heart divides in two.
When Karen goes away
For me it’s never through.
My wall comes tumbling down
When Karen comes around.
