I was thinking damn, this guy is doing a great version. He even has the voice down and everything! Then I looked at the channel and it all made sense haha
Saw you in London on Saturday in London. Loved your opening set. Right up on the 4th floor we were all grooving. Lot's of people with their eyes closed just totally into your music. I'm borrowing a Rhodes today, this is the first thing I'm going to play on it! Keep on being awesome Joey.
Great, great song - my favorite song on the new Vulfpeck album! A suggestion on how to understand the function of that D7: you can think of it as a V7 of gm (or vi in your home key of B-flat) that first resolves deceptively to E-flat (VI in gm) before eventually resolving to gm. When thought of in g minor, that short progression of D7-Eb-D7-Gm is V7-VI-V7-i.
After years of neglecting anything I learned as a child playing the piano , mandatory mind you, I found the joy of studying again and dug into this one. Hell I’ve even got me a decent SV1 stage piano to emulate those super sexy Rhodes/Wurlitzer tones. Big thank you for this.
You are so cool to do this lesson! Thank you! I love your voice and music. I found you on Spotify yesterday and have been listening since. We need your soulful voice and music. Thank you!
thanks Joey, i've been meaning to break down these chords for awhile - such a killer tune - i was there in london where you opened for vulf - love your music x
Thanks a lot for this, love this song. I learned it all from this video and then I made the drums and bass from the last vulfpeck video in midi to play along with. I smile every time I play it!
I love you man!! when you say "a Clasic Ab" it makes me laugh here in Argentina I call it SOUL dominant just not to waste spit :) Thanks for the tutorial!!!
I figured this tune out by ear... my voicings are completely different. Even a different harmonic structure to the pre-chorus ("I gotta believe baby,,,") Not sure if I should I ditch my version for the real one :)
I don’t consider myself a theory expert by any stretch, but I think it’s cool that Joey put this up to teach, so here’s the functional analysis, as I understand it. The overall tonality is Bb major, but there’s a bit of modal interchange (i.e., borrowing chords from parallel or related minor modes). INTRO: I | ii7b5 Think of the intro as Bbma7 and C-7b5/Bb. With respect to the second chord, Cm7b5 is enharmonically equivalent to Eb-6, which is how Joey’s thinking of it. Note that Cm7b5 is the iv chord in Eb melodic minor. The advantage to seeing it as a Cm7b5, i.e., as iv of Eb melodic minor is that then you get the ‘correct’ extensions given the melody, which helps you if you were soloing over the intro with the melody in mind. If you were playing the changes over the intro, you’d play Bb Ionian (or whatever) over the I, and you’d play Bb mixolydian b6, i.e., the 5th mode of Eb melodic minor, over the ii7b5 chord. (Try it, sounds nice.) It’s a move you see a lot in gospel. 2nd SECTION (from the Gb): bVI III7 | IV III7 | vi Here the Gbmaj7 is a bVI chord temporarily borrowed from Bb natural minor. The first D7 is a passing chord on the way to IV of Bb major. The second D7 is a secondary dominant taking us to vi of Bb major (so technically that D7 is a V/vi). This is basically like the first two chords of a iii-vi-ii-V progression like you see in jazz, where you can substitute a dominant for any of the iii-vi-ii chords, since the dominant is leading you where you were headed anyway. 3rd SECTION (from the Ab Classic) bVIIsus | iisus Vsus The bVIIsus in the first measure is again borrowed from Bb minor. The Gbmaj7 in the right hand is a bVI chord just like in the previous section, the bass note comes from the same Bb Aeolian mode. Accordingly, the extensions you want in this measure are Bb Aeolian. In the second measure, we’re back to Bb major, with what is essentially a ii V turnaround, except both the ii and V are suspended. The chord tones invert with the extensions when you suspend, but that’s the only real difference to a vanilla ii-V; you can still see the whole ii V as in Bb as if they weren’t suspended. Great song. Hope this helps.
I have similar vocal range (not as high though) and weirdly I manage l can manage a low Bb in 'chest voice'. Still dunno. Managed these chords ok, I just suck at playing and vocalising at the same time lol
For a sec I was about to comment "Wow you sound a lot like Joey Dosik" and then as I was scrolling down I saw the channel name and now I feel like a fool

Thank you so much for doing this -- it's not often you get to learn how to play a song right from the artist
Dude, you are so supportive. I’ve been trying to get my playing out the basic keys and this has been so much help.
Joey, may I just say how great it is that you are tutorializing your own stuff, Awesome. Hope to see you soon man! ROCK ON!

Thank you Joey, beginner and love the chords. Easy to follow thanks!
my eyes got lit up as he sang that low bflat lol
Yo Joey, were you thinking about these as slash chords when writing it? Or is that just the better means for explaining the voicings in this tutorial?
Really fun progression, Joey. Love the Gbmaj7/Ab as the first chord in the prechorus.
Thank you music man
Thanks a lot for this, love this song. I learned it all from this video and then I made the drums and bass from the last vulfpeck video in midi to play along with. I smile every time I play it!

Hey Joey, i want to improve my singing, but don't know how. Are you completely self-taught, did you learned it professionally? Keen to know.
What a great question, I'm curious about it too! Joey seems like he might be self-taught, but he has some serious chops :D pls answer, Joey!

I'm curious now, have you uploaded your version?
fuckin amazing dude
Hell Ya!
It'd be really sweet if we got some videos explain the sax parts to some of the songs, because they're pretty sick
Hey guys, was wondering if anyone would mind explaining how you understand this in terms of functional harmony? Cheers

@@mikemcdorman85 wow only just came back to this. Thanks so much...
a cool chord to add to the prog somewhere is G sharp dim 7 with A sharp on the bass
It's good as it is man. Maybe upload a reharmonization?

First song I've learnt on Piano thank you Joey !
Every one of your songs is a "Game Winner"... see what I did there?
I love your voice, and I love your music❤
