Charo was born in Murcia, Spain, and attended school in a convent from a young age. After she graduated in her teen years, she trained in classical guitar, first under the tutelage of virtuoso Andres Segovia and later with Spanish-born Xavier Cugat. In fact, the 66-year-old Cugat became Charo’s first husband. And yes, she was only a teen or young adult when they married. Her marriage to Cugat was one of convenience: Charo wanted a ticket into the United States. Once there, she quickly made a name for herself as a bubbly, energetic comedic performer on shows like The Ed Sullivan Show, Laugh-In, Hollywood Squares, and The Love Boat.
During this time, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, she developed her now-iconic catchphrase, “cuchi-cuchi.” In the late 70s, her popularity began to take a nose-dive, and she retreated into her family life. She and her second husband, businessman Kjell Rasten, moved to Hawaii to bring up their son and also built a vast Beverly Hills compound for dozens of Charo’s family to live in. She also turned back to her first love: classical Spanish guitar, performing at Vegas and across the world and winning numerous accolades for her songs and albums. The 2010s were tumultuous for Charo-she saw fame on Dancing With the Stars but also had to experience the tragic death of her beloved husband.
Despite all the tragedy she’s experienced in her life, Charo remains optimistic: “My goal is to try new things, to make people forget their problems, make them laugh, and for them to talk about it the next day.” If you’ve already watched and loved this video about Charo, one of the 1960s and 1970s most famous Spanish musicians, share it with friends and family and give it a thumbs up. Charo may be considered a bit silly here in the US but she's a world class flaminco guitarist . Extremely skilled.
I agree! I love to hear her play.
We couldn't agree more! Thanks for sharing.
I love hearing her play too. I remember when she made a guest appearance in a video about Spanish guitar lessons.
I thought she had several albums out. Classical Flamenco.
Flaminco? Sorry.
I met Charo in 2004 on a cruise where she performed. I was blown away by her guitar skills - I had no idea. The following day she did a meet-and-greet for whoever wanted to come by for a photo and autograph. I remember her as extremely warm and engaging - just a wonderful experience. She deserves all the accolades and love her fans can give.
Thank you for sharing your personal experience involving Charo. It's nice to hear that you were amazed with her guitar skills and had a great time 👍
I watched her as a kid and thought she was always funny and bubbly. I feel she most definitely deserves more recognition for her accomplishments on tv and definitely music. I also liked her very colorful costumes she wore as well.
She was on TV alot when I was growing up. And very beautiful also
I remember her from when I was a kid also. She was always so much fun to watch. I now follow her on Facebook and Twitter where she posts quite often.
Charo has a unique persona which made her special. Thank you for your comment!
Charo is incredible. I also remember her well from the 70s, I was just a boy. What an amazing musician, actor and dancer. I was completely in love. I miss the 70s, what a great time to be a kid.
She is milfamous!
She DOES deserve to be recognized for her role in pop culture! I love Charo!
Glad you like Charo! What other types of videos would you like to see?
I think of Charo as the Dolly Parton of her time. She was a gifted guitarist
Thanks for watching!
Yes!
Yes she does need that recognition. I didn't know she was that talented at guitar.
Charo and Prince.
She's very talented at playing a guitar and a world-class fiamenco guitarist as well ❤
She is the worlds best flaminco guitarist. Taught by Segovia. She deserves all the awards she can get.
I love the music it's beautiful
University of Philippines has a talent test to get into the college you got to know at least 4 pieces. The notes , the modern theme, contemporary and the classic masters. Segovia is a classic piece .
Impressive!
@@robertotamesis1783 Hello, Roberto in the Phillpines! Sr. Segovia is a virtuoso flamenco guitarist who plays "classic pieces" of music. Calling someone a "piece" is generally a derogatory term here in the U.S. and I think you really mean to express admiration for the gentleman.
@@marthawelch4289 he was the master of fingers strumming w/o the pick. My classmate masters his skills he got into U.P. music conservatory , he shifted to become a vet med w/a cum laude degree. I don't think he took the licensesing board. Personally , l believed he should he have been practicing vet. Instead he became a promotional salesman . Too bad while I was encoding his promotional tapes he was showing signs of strange eye movement . He consulted an eye doctor who gave him a bad prognosis . It was later found out he had a slip disc , practicing weight lifting w/o a spotter, the doctor told him he has M.S. Multiple seleriois what a bummer , whenever l play the guitar it reminds me of him , what if he had stuck two careers and one hobby. Not to mentioned he has family to take of . Sometimes we should tell our children to stick to one career, one hobby any one passion. Imagine getting into body building broke his back.
Before there was Sophie Vegara there was Charro. Her strong Spanish latin accent could not be missed.

Roberto Tamesis- Hi, I was watching SVegara for the first time & I could not put my finger on, whom she reminded me of. Sofia Vergara is overrated
Definitely yes she deserves the most and more recognition. She always exuded warmth and the entire family delighted with her guest appearances
Definitely, Charo is a charming and very talented woman!
She should be recognized for her abilities
We feel the same way. What other types of videos would you like to see?
I met her when I was 18 years old at the fountain blue in Miami Beach Florida. She was extremely talented, very short and petite, stunning to behold visually, and a magnificent guitarist, second only to Andre Segovia. Once Segovia passed, as far as I'm concerned, Charo became the world's greatest flamingo guitarist, not one of them but the foremost and leading guitarist in the world! Back in those days she was extremely generous of spirit, and welcome to everybody who spoke to her, she didn't seem to even know what the word stranger meant. I will always cherish meeting her, and engaging in a generous conversation with her. To me she's an international star, and always will be! Best regards to you always Charo, wherever you are today. Sincerely, Deborah Combs, Ohio USA.
Segovia DESPISED flamenco music. It was a gypsy art form, and viewed as "low". The guitar, in general, was considered an unrefined instrument for peasants. Segovia was a Classical player, and he fought to raise the guitars stature by ONLY playing classical. Charro is unbelievable, but not even close to Carlos Montoya, or Paco DeLucia. She did not "take the torch" from Andres Segovia.
As a classical guitar teacher for over 20 years, she is not that good playing guitar.

Lol
Growing up, every single one of us loved seeing Charo appear and say Cuchi-Cuchi.
She livened up everything and everyone. Always great to see this legend.
I don't know much about the young lady, but she's great.
You must mean everyone in your family. I found her extremely annoying. I do acknowledge her incredible talent on guitar and she may well be a wonderful person, but her affect when she did guest appearances was like nails on a blackboard for me.
Took my parents to Hawaii in 1992 for their 50th wedding anniversary. Booked tickets for a dinner show featuring Charo. My Dad didn't really want to go as he said he didn't need to see the Cuchi Cuchi Lady. Well he was awe struck at her show. Her guitar playing was stunning. Then I told my dad she was top Flamenco Guitar player in the world. My Dad said he Never saw such a GREAT Show. She is not just a Female with a pretty face and great body, SHE HAS A GREAT TALENT.
For sure. That entertainer personality as well.
I was given tickets to her show in Las Vegas and I have to say it washed one of the best shows ever. She was incredible and she could play classical Spanish flamenco guitar like no one else. Amazing.

@@michaelpalmieri7335 you beat me to it! 😉
It's "flamenco" not flamingo.
@@AG-zh7zl thank you for correcting me I am sight impaired. I have to use the microphone and it's very hard to go back and try and make corrections.
I, also seen her show in Las Vegas. I got free tickets and thought "What the Hell". After her show I gave her a standing ovation, she was that good. Later in years when I was limo driver, I had the chance to have her in my car. I was amazed how petite and shy she was.
I grew with Charo on Tv, always a pleasure, however, I finally watched her perform the guitar in the 2000’s live and wow, she’s a master. Her energy and talent blew me away. Charo and her guitar…masterpiece. It’s all passion and skill, one of the best in that genre dominated by men. Master class, much respect!
My opinion of Charo shot up several notches when I saw her on an episode of the Hollywood Squares, of all places. Gamemaster Peter Marshall asked her if she or anyone else would like to be known as "Persona Non Grata." She immediately said "no," quite emphatically. I was impressed, because the term is not a common one - being used primarily in diplomatic circles. It was then I realized Charo was much more intelligent then she let on with the "ditzy blonde" character.
Persona non grata is directly translatable from Italian to Spanish w/o any changes. Charo knew Spanish, so she relied on her linguistic abilities, which was her strong point.
@@PRmoustache88 Actually, "Persona Non Grata" is Latin, literally meaning "Person Not Welcome." It's true that both Italian and Spanish are heavily influenced by Latin, but I still contend it is impressive Charo knew what the term meant.
She is brilliant
That show always provided the celebrities with Q/A and punchline
@@kendallsmith1458 I don't think so. First, Charo's answer was not a "joke." She just became excited and said "Oh no, you would not." Also, a disclaimer was broadcast at the end of the show that although some things were discussed before each broadcast, the celebrities were hearing the questions for the first time. Yes, I know that grants a bit of leeway, but I don't believe the entire show was scripted. Occasionally, the celebrities didn't know an answer or their attempt at humor would fall flat. In Charo's case, I believe she knew the answer without it being given to her right before the show was taped.
Loved her Guitar playing
I always loved Charo and am happy to read that she's still out there entertaining. Thanks for sharing this video.
Thanks for watching! We're so glad you enjoyed this video. What other types of videos would you like to see?
I have always loved spanish and flaminco guitar and have "Guitar Passion" mentioned here, Charo is incredible. I have always loved her work.
As a kid in the early 70s who's parents watched a lot of sketch comedy and variety shows Charo was a household name - we all loved her
Absolutely absolutely Hall of famer. Being taught by Andreas Segovia makes her an exceptional human being. Andre Segovia is not chopped liver when it comes to playing the guitar. Charo is a humanitarian to the umpteenth level beyond what we can even imagine.
Very well said, thank you for sharing! What other types of videos would you like to see?
Is there actual evidence she was taught by him? She seems like the type of person that's fudge her past quite a bit. Not judging her as many actors and musicians in Hollywood had their pasts recreated by the studios and/or their agents.
@@steamdespair9189 She wasn’t taught by Segovia. That was just PR BS.
She wasn’t an actual student of Segovia. “ Although Charo's always said she was a student of Andres Segovia, she confessed that actually she was a student in the school he established in Spain for underprivileged children to study guitar.”
What is more, Segovia was never a flamenco guitarist and never ever taught flamenco.
Charo is a fabulous entertainer. Her performances, tv appearances and roles in movies are amazing.
Spot on!
I loved all her appearances on the Carol Burnett show and Charo's mom sketch, hilarious!!!
Yes she is very talented and she should be recognized for this
I always liked her. She was goofy but clearly talented.
Charo deserves the best in life, stay happy.
Stay safe too! What other types of videos would you like to see?
I saw her perform Live just a few years ago. She blew me away. Her classical guitar skills are second to none but she truly is one of those bigger than life characters. I put her in the same category as Cher and Dolly Parton.
Glad to hear that! How was her performance?
Definitely, she has always been a favorite of mine and still is. She deserves more recognition.
Glad you feel that way. Thank you for watching our content. Be on the lookout for our next video!
Yes she deserves what ever recognition she can get!! Go Charo go!!
Went to the islands for honeymoon in 96.Had choice to see her or Don Ho. I remember her from Loveboat and was amazed how she played. No brainer who we went to see.She is a amazing talent, never stops or slows down.Real firecracker of energy.Tried to record her, it was hard she was all over.Lost her for a second then had someone grab me from behind.Chauro got you baby and you could imagine what happened next. They say she is the hardest and richest woman on the big island is no lie.Truely amazing .
I enjoyed watching her in the 70s and 80s
Absolutely! Her talent goes way beyond her natural beauty!🤗
I love her personalty. We need more of that here.
Glad to hear you liked the video! We'll try to work on more Charo videos in the future. What other types of videos would you like to see?
Total entertainer , and massively underrated
Charo was a part of my childhood days ❤️ Charo
Charo deserves to be recognized more for her acting and amazing musical talent along with being very intelligent person. I'm also very sure she's a very interesting person 🙂
We agree! Thank you for watching our content. Be on the lookout for our next video!
She’s way smarter than you think. Good video!
I remember her well growing up watching Ed Sullivan etc, and fantastic. Flaminco Guitarist.
Wow. I didn't know much about her and I didn't watch those shows except the Love Boat. I was surprised how talented guitarist she is 👏👏👏
Thanks for the update! I used to keep track of her when she was on television a lot, but lost track over the years. While we don't know her real age, she's somewhere around my age! For years I thought she was older than I was, now it looks like she may be a bit younger, who knows! She may be the most famous flamenco guitar player , but Segovia has been considered the greatest of all. He taught her. I remember her Cuchi-cuchi though. Looks like she's gotten the same pinched nose job that the members of the Jackson family went through, that's rather obvious! Thanks again and for a great delivery! You're one of the best narrators on UA-cam videos about famous celebrities, nice diction, clear voice and at least you pronounce names correctly...great job again, much appreciated.
A Constant ray of Sunshine. You cannot help but smile when Charro lights up the screen. Thanks for a lovely video!
I remember watching her on tv when I was a kid, she was funny.
Saw her a few years ago in Waikiki at Hilton Hawaiian Village Show.
She was excellent
I had my picture taken with Charo at Hilton Hawaiian village in December 1991.
🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩❤❤❤❤❤❤❤👍👍👍
There are alot of musicans who never got the credit they deserved, like Charo, as other influential forces are too busy taking up the limelight.
"A lot" is two words, not one.
True, I’m also credit her moral conscience ,helpless, consoling her second husband’s enduring affliction. Once while I was on meds. The side effect was like being burned with lite cigarettes when in sunlight, I couldn’t begin to imagine dealing with that sort of pain 24/7. I’m surprised that she hasn’t written a book on her life’s experience seeing the the full life led so far for inspiration to others including her own children.
Obviously very talented and beautiful woman. 🥰
She never aged, and is an amazing talent. She was the best guitarist /dancer, very sexy, and her
vamp/ kitten act was a comedic put-on. There seems to be no 'dark-truth' about Charo, she's great!
Dark truth was her choocie choocie catch phrase.
She is in our hearts that's for sure. The fact that she is still relevant speaks in volumes. Todays mainstream popularity is not a measure. Charo actually IS talented! She is beautiful, skilled, smart, professional, sexy and a great comedian and actress. I'll never forget her.
Coochi Coochi always.

I just met Charo at a meet and greet in Burbank, California. She is a delightful and charming woman. And she most certainly should be recognized more for her guitar playing.
I have ALWAYS loved Charo..from the first moment I heard her sing, dance and play her guitar. This lovely lady is so talented. So sorry I have never been able to see her in Las Vegas. She is darling.
Beautiful words, thank you for your message for Charo. What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
María Rosario Pilar Martínez Molina Baeza,(Charo) was born January 15, 1951 (age 70 years), in Murcia, Spain. Her first husband was Xavier Cugat they were married (m. 1966-1978) which would have made her only 15 years old
I met her and her Husband in 2018, she was very nice and talked with me for about 15 minutes. She said I was to young to know who she was lol. We did a photo together ( Her late Husband took the photo ) and called it a night, again very nice person. Sad to hear her Husband passed he qas also a very nice person.
Thanks for watching!
Charo has appeared on the TV show, the Love boat more times than any other celebrity. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
Great fun fact! Thank you Harper 👍
I have always been a huge fan of Charo I know that she is highly intelligent genius and one of the most incredible flamenco guitarist I've ever seen in my life and I've been in the music business for 30 years and I've been in the entertainment business for longer she is a legend and it would be such an honor to perform with her
I didn't know that Charo was such a gifted guitarist. I liked her bubbly personality and found her enjoyable.
😳 wow, what a interesting individual!
Yeah definitely deserves cred,
Thx for posting as well
My introduction to Charo was on the Pee-Wee's Playhouse Christmas Special in 1986 when I was 3 years old. I never knew her backstory. This was a very interesting video. Thanks so much, Fact Verse!
That was an excellent Christmas special, maybe the best I have ever seen.
I loved her as a kid
I now have to find her flamenco cds.
Thanks for watching!
I will tell you I used to go to her house as someone I was friend’s with dated her son Shel. Her Sister looks a lot like her & I did some singing with her nephew. I actually used to pick fruit from her house with permission. She’s extremely underrated as a musician. However, if you know music particularly guitar you know how gifted she is. I messaged her after her husband’s suicide. They are a very lovely & down to earth family. She’s a very classy lady.
Extremely beautiful, talented, iconic, and well deserving of recognition!
Tremendous stage performer. Ton of energy. Around forever.
She should definitely be recognized for her accomplishments on playing classical/flamenco guitar. I love flamenco guitar. But the television and/or movie industry, not so much. She's obviously a very smart as well as talented woman. It's not easy to learn Chinese and the home she built for many family members with an intercom system throughout the home was a tremendous idea. She's really an amazing woman............. unstoppable!
Her unique talent and charm are a great reason why she deserves to be bettered recognized. She always brought a smile to many including myself,
I loved Charo as a child. I always thought she was underrated. She is still beautiful and talented.
I was Blessed at 9yrs old to watch Charro perform in 1973 at a Bob Hope show at the cotton bowl 70,000 people in attendance...
I loved watching her on the love boat, with her bubbly personality and even more when she performed with her guitar, her voice was amazing. I don’t think of her being silly nor of the dumb blond jokes. She was bubbly and maybe over excited, but I think of that has her charm. She always made me feel good after watching her.
Thanks for watching!
I never thought she was a ditz. She always seemed smarter than anyone else with her on the stage. I knew of her guitar prowess but did not know some of the other details. Very classy and beautiful
Charo was an absolute goddess! Tee up with her. Beautiful lady!
Charo makes some of the best posts on Social Media! She has been through a lot and I admire her positive healthy attitude despite it. She is beautiful inside and out. ♡
I, always, loved her April Lopez character on the Love Boat, but it was her guitar playing that made me love her. Her technique was on a par with the greatest guitar players out there, including Brian May, Carlos Santana, and Eric Clapton.
Thanks for watching!
Her birthdate in Wikipedia says Jan. 1951, but an appearance on Ed Sullivan as shown in UA-cam playing/singing "La Cucuracha" is from April 1965. That is definitely not a 14 year old girl. Regardless of her actual age, yes, she was a fun personality to watch. Truly a shame that she was known here more for the wild and crazy blonde routine than her world-class musicianship.
Yes, Charo deserves recognition for her classical guitar work. And looking back nostalgically to what show biz was like in the 1960s and 70s, a little "cuchi-cuchi" is a pleasant memory of a young girl who lived out the "Lucy Ricardo" fantasy.
Charo's career has been a joy, and never as cheap hussy!
I grew up with Charo on TV in the 1970s. I enjoyed her funny and cheerful persona and admired her beauty.
Growing up I saw alot of Charo on tv and was always entertained by her. I always enjoyed seeing her on tv.

I met and interviewed Charo years ago in the 1990s as a reporter.
I saw her perform. guitar before meeting and talking with her afterwards. Clearly an outstanding and skilled guitarist.
Unfortunately this was little known about her in trms of public. She was known mostly as a personality type on TV shows . I found this unfortunate.
Thank you for sharing your experience being an interviewer who had the chance to talk to Charo. How was she personally?
Brilliant guitarist. Huge influence.
Her personality looks more fun and enjoys life. She's cute and have her style
I grew up a 70’s kid and always liked her. thank you so much 😊
I had no idea of her AMAZING talents until You Tube recommended her video on Ed Sullivan. She doesn't deserve the stereotype dumped on her. But Charo played the game...all the way to the bank!
She’s incredibly talented and beautiful too…
I had no idea she was a guitarist and taught by Spain’s most distinguished guitar player
We watched Charo on Oahu Hawaii at her club by far the most charming and musically gifted Lady . She danced , joked and then played amazing flamenco guitar a true talent .
I saw Charo in Las Vegas! She was amazing! ♥️👍
Her schtick was to come off as a wise ditz. However, she she is very easy on the eyes and is wonderful on the guitar!!! I have most of her albums. I never considered myself as guitar fan but, she turned me into one!
I never heard of her until now so thanks very much for the introduction

I was a teenager in the 70's and thought she was just another blonde bimbo. Then in 1984 I went to Hawaii and had a beer and hamburger at a place on the beach on Kaua'i she owned. My god what a wonderful talented women. She is also devoted to her family and such a treasure. I haven't thought about her in 35 years Thank you for highlighting this wonderful lady. Hell no she wasn't over rated. I think she is to this day one of the most talented performers from that time or any other. Best wishes Charo from a fan.
I’ve always loved her guitar playing. Beautiful!
Defo deserves more recognition!!
I saw Charo in Vegas with Jim Neighbors and she absolutely blew me away with her guitar playing, I knew that she could play but I never knew that she was that good. The show was absolutely fantastic and probably my favorite Vegas show of all times. Charo should absolutely get recognized for all of her abilities.
I always thought of Charo as this kind of ditsy camp figure (from Carol Burnett Show). I would never have imagined her as a highly trained Classical Flaminco Guitarist trained by the great Segovia. I have a greater respect for this funny and multitalented entertainer.
Loved her personality. Cuchi-Cuchi!
The hot chick / dumb blonde / eye candy is a crucial part of show biz. It’s been around forever in various incarnations and has given us some beloved stars over the decades. That being said many of the women who find success with this image are often far more talented and can offer more, it’s just that the industry only allows them so much. Charo is the perfect example of this, the image and schtick made her an icon and wealthy but it overshadowed her musical talent. However the success she earned gave her a platform to - at least on occasion- showcase those deeper talents. In some ways there are parallels between Charo & Dolly Parton. Undoubtedly though Charo is an Icon who will only become MORE respected as time goes by.
HI TIM. GREAT JOB. 😇😎🎤.
I didn't know that Charo was considered one of the " World's Foremost "

Charo was always upbeat and positive and more of a talent than she sometimes seemed.
Yes she should be more widely recognized. She is an amazing guitarist.
I've played guitar since age 12 and played pro from 15 to 40 and can hold my own well enough. I saw her on tv playing back in the early 70's and she inspired me to learn classical also. She truly is a awesome guitarist and deserves mention as such.
Extremely talented and intelligent and beautiful soul! Yes, I believe Charro should receive recognition for her achievements!❤️
