So, you're wondering what to do in Porto, Portugal? Here are our top ten suggestions for what to see and what to eat in Porto.
00:00 About Porto
Porto, also known as Oporto in some languages, is a city of many faces. From dark, foggy and gloomy, perfectly reflecting its nickname 'Invicta' - invincible, never conquered, to cheerful, colourful and vibrant through it's iconic tiles, lively vintage tramcars and most importantly, enticing gourmet experiences.
While the famous Port wine bears Porto's name, it is actually produced in the beautiful Douro Valley about 90 km away and stored and aged in cellars on the other side of the Douro river in Vila Nova de Gaia.
Together with its neighbour, Gaia, Porto gave name to modern day Portugal, evolving from Latin name Portus Cale to Portucale and finally to Portugale.
It will captivate all of your senses, so enjoy it slowly and indulgently.

Beautiful, charming, and colourfully authentic - Porto will not leave you indifferent. It offers so much, we feel we have to give some honourable mentions as well.
Famous historic market, Mercado do Bolhão, is currently undergoing restoration works and can be temporarily found in a shopping centre close-by. Treating yourself to a coffee in the Art Nouveau marvel, Majestic Café, is a distinctive experience. Taking a ride with historic tramcars will take you past the City Hall, dazzling Church of Saint Ildefonso and Chapel of Souls, while The Guindais Funicular will carry you between both levels of Luis I bridge. And let's not forget Porto is actually a port town, so a trip to a beach is surely inevitable.
But don't take our word for it, come and see for yourself!

Nice video covering some amazing parts of a great city.
Amazing video! Keep up the good work! ❤
Thank you! You too! 🔥
The name Portugal is actually the combination of the Latin word "Portus", meaning Port and the Celtic world "Cale", a reference to the Callaic or Gallaic, a Celtic people who inhabiteted Northern Portugal when the Romans arrived in the region. Porto's origin is Celtic.
Thank you for this addition! When researching the topic, we found there are still multiple theories on etymology, even today. As this information is part of the introduction, meant as a small, interesting bit of trivia, going too deep into different options felt heavy and extensive, so only a more unanimously agreed part was used. But the story and origin of the name is absolutely worth exploring in more detail, maybe even in another video.
Portus Cale
*Portus* the actually city of Oporto
*Cale* the actually city of Gaia
The origin of the city of Gaia dates back to a Celtic origin, when integrated into the Roman Empire, it took the name Cale (or Gale, since in Classical Latin there is no clear distinction between the letters and the sound "g" and "c"). This name is, most likely of Celtic origin, a development of "Gall-", with which the Celts referred to themselves (other examples can be found in "Galicia", "Gaul", "Galway"). The Douro River itself (Durius in Latin), is also Celtic, built from the Celtic "dwr", which means water.
During Roman times, the vast majority of the population lived on the south bank of the Douro, with a small community located to the north around the deep water port, where the riverside area of Porto is now located. The name of the city of Porto, later "Portus Cale", would mean the port (portus in Latin) of the city of Gaia. With the development as a center of commercial exchanges, the north bank also ended up growing in importance, having settled there the clergy and bourgeois…
Cheers 😉
@@WolfpackTravel Its Porto. No OPorto...we don t like calling our city that word.
We did just a whole video series on Lisbon and Porto has been on our list for this year. It's a tough draw as we still didn't get to experience all of Lisbon but have heard and seen that Porto has a different vibe. Great video!
Sounds great! I contrast to Lisbon's bustling, cosmopolitan vibe, Porto is a bit more laid-back, deep-conversation-with-a-glass-of-wine-while-enjoying-fabulous-view-of-the-river kind of city 😉
Loved your video. We will be visiting Porto on a cruise on Sept. 11, 2023
Did you visit it in September? What was your experience, gloomy and grey or sunny and colourful? 😉
Minha terra ❤️ a mais bela do mundo 🌏
Even though it’s not our country, we still fell in love with it! 💚
Well done! Nice narration. I look forward to a visit to Porto. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it, and we're sure you'll enjoy Porto even more!

Nice kantre
Very nice indeed! 😉
The bridge is not "Dom Luis I", it´s only "Luis I" but it´s a common error
Thank you Rogério, definitely a welcome information. In most publications and guides the name is written as Ponte de Dom Luís I or shortened to Ponte de D. Luís from what we assumed that is the official name.
City,pronuncia
Santiago is SHITTY for francesinha.
DUVALIA is the place to go and taste the best francesinha in Porto. Without any doubt
The colour looked shitty
Thank you for the tip, we'll definitely give it a try on our next visit!
